It is sad that people fall for this nonsense. I've lost 50 pounds but I did it over several years, not a week. It also require a lot of lifestyle changes which I gradually made so as not to feel deprived or stressed. It is a shame TH-cam doesn't put disclaimers of BS on these videos.
Actually they should be banned because of misinformation...
Congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome.
This.. if you want to lose weight and keep it off you need to create a lifestyle that fits your diet, not the other way around.
Definitely. It takes time
Congrats on your weight loss! I did too, lost around 50 (goal is 15 more), but had to change my lifestyle around food. Biggest thing was learning to cook better and finding a happy medium with food. I still count calories every so often to check where I'm at, but man, I found I grossly underestimated what I was eating due to mindless snacking. Congrats again!
Why would anyone trust the life hack channels
A lot of people do
It's not a life hack channel. They have survival tip videos that blow up as well hence more subscribers than DanTDM
No one trust these
Probably insane kooks.
You don't have to trust someone to internalize destructive messages of self-hatred from them - source: PTSD from years of childhood bullying.
I lost 25+lbs in less than a week... No drugs, surgery, or massage-
I had a baby 😂
the results are apparent 😂
congrats, that is the most amazing way.
GAD DAMN THATS A BIG BABY
Congrats!
@@kairon5249 it's not just the baby, there's also amniotic fluid, the placenta, and a decent amount of blood loss that occurs (plus a lot of women get constipated in pregnancy and end up pooping during delivery, so they deliver a human baby AND a food baby)
It's funny how a "life hack" channel takes something as conceptually simple as losing weight and makes it extraordinarily more complicated.
It wasn't, but it clearly was a diet in disguise.
@@AedanBlackheart there's literally no other way though
I am convinced content like this is doing more harm to people who struggle with their weight or self-image than body shaming ever could.
All a matter of perspective ig
Right they should rename it, how to give yourself anorexia!!
I am convinced content like this is doing more harm to people who struggle with their weight or self-image than body shaming ever could.
the majority of the audience is kids. I was one of them
It technically is a self image deprecating thing. It suggests that you have to lose weight to go out on a date or wear a dress; it’s unfair.
How the hell do people even trust these kinds of life hack channels? Kudos to Dr. Mike for debunking them 😃
Desperate people are susceptible to all kinds of bullshit.
It's simple. People are always looking for that miracle diet/pill that make them lose weight without the hard work.
unforunately A LOT of young women do. i see so many tiktokers who promote quick fixes and spot reductions and there is one girl in particular who is notorious for it. she will start the video showing off her perfect abs and point to them with text saying how to get lower abs in two weeks and blah blah blah. unforuntaely, a lot of young girls love those videos and then comment askign questions and asking for videos of what she eats in a day and its just so toxic. it makes me so sad because i fell for these things when i was younger and it messed up my body image and has taken years to move past it.
Lazy idiots will try anything except what’s proven to work
The way she speaks just reeks of BS, trying to sell you something, or manipulation.
Interesting how the TikTok voice speaks in a similar manner..
Please never stop debunking popular videos promoting misinformation. Thank you dr Mike!
I’d like to see him do a video on that V Shred guy. Because it seems like he has the answers to everything regarding weight loss, and they are all the opposite of what we know.
Please never stop debunking popular videos promoting misinformation. Thank you dr Mike!
Bright Side: "I cut down the salt intake"
Also Bright Side at 7:12: "Pinch of salt in a smoothie"
The most concerning in the video for me is getting your self worth from the attention of men, and the assumption that you need to be skinny to get it. Why even give someone else so much power over how you see yourself? Why??
it is not a bad thing to want to attract the opposite sex. Yes, relying on it is not a good thing, but to lose weight to look better to get compliments is not a bad thing
@@FlawgoreI get what you mean but op was just saying that you should do stuff for yourself and not for other people.
This video is so uncanny because the story is not relatable or personable and the narrator has to be AI. They didn't even stick with ONE stock woman to be a character. The entire video feels AI generated. Makes my skin crawl!
@@Flawgore ok it’s different for everybody, but i would not be attracted to superficial and judgy ppl.
@@gafhs1235 but even that is not quite true. We all do stuff for other from time to time, because it feels nice to have (positive) attention. What truly matters is to have a healthy relationship with that concept and to not do something that would be harmful one way or another just for someone else.
Losing weight because you want to be more attractive to certain people is a perfectly good and valid reason. What matters is to lose said weight properly.
I'm so glad he discussed this. It's always so difficult to explain this to people that it's all about caloric intake and that there is no quick fix diet or that you can't solely rely on exercise to loose weight. I always tell people you loose weight in the kitchen, the exercise is for health, physical and mental.
Being a dietetics student, I confess I made my own diet plan, activities to do everyday. It took a year for me to reduce around 7kgs(i guess 14 to 15 pounds)
for someone who is only a few kgs off is ok, i have 60 extra pounds i must lose...
@@omegarugal9283 the more extra you have, the easier it is, it's a logarithmic progression: the lower your weight, the more difficult it is to lose weight, up to a point where you just unalive yourself
as someone who has struggled with disordered eating/exercise addiction because of videos like that, i really appreciate that not only is doctor mike saying its wrong, but he is also giving the correct information 😌 thank you doctor mike!!! 🩷
When he said “I can’t believe I just cursed “ got me😂
Great job for calling this out. What planet is this individual living on? I weighed 127 kg in 2012, 61.7 yesterday morning, and I am still not done (almost though). Losing weight takes major effort and, depending on how much there is to lose, takes a long time. I wish it were different, but it isn't. Reality is what the facts are, not what we wish it to be. Weight loss *is* possible for everyone, but we have to be willing to pay the price and listening to nonsense like this is going to discourage people, not encourage them. So, Doctor Mike, great job!
People always want quick results, I really wish it was like the movies but you got to put in work
Thanks for the video here, Dr.Mike
Unpopular Opinion:
I have read the comments below said video by BrightSide: The comments seem to all say that they found the video helpful and managed to make their lifestyle a bit more healthful.
I understand BrightSide might have a very misleading and clickbait-y title, but I do not think the majority expects to lose weight in a week or a month.
Maybe this video is too harsh of a judgement?
I could be totally wrong here and am willing to listen to the other side.
BrightSide is incredibly bad... They also upload so fast and so frequently that many of their videos contradict themselves... My guess is that they just have a team of graphic artists combined with fair use clips and LOTS of AI pumping those videos out to get monetised.
This is why there needs to be more new laws regarding stuff online. They're getting rich from misinformation. How is that not illegal yet. If you buy something that isn't as described there are laws to protect us. Same should go for this BS.
I've heard them referred to as "content farms" And what you describe is exactly what they are. The minute I hear a robot voice, I click off and block the channel.
These days they don't even need artists or editors, it could easily be generated from scratch and uploaded without a single human being involved.
It’s called AI generated content.
They are a Russian content farm. Pretty fascinating phenomenon, if you look into. They hire people around the world to pump out the most random things, for multiple channels. It's a big business, many of these content farms are owned by the same handful of companies from Russia and Cambodia.
4:43 this meme is SOOOOOOOO damn CUTE IM CRYING
hey doctor mike! can you do a full video surrounding your best tips to aid bloating and ibs symptoms at home/over the counter? thanks :) love your videos btw
To be fair unless you are eating a mostly whole foods diet and cooking everything at home I think most people in the US at least do get too much sodium. Like packaged and processed foods typically have a lot of sodium. I believe restaurants use quite a bit as well. But you should definitely research before cutting down. That's nitpicking though it is great video
This seriously might be one of the rare times I am going to look up the video and report it for false information.
1:46 Dr.mike "can't believe I just cursed"
Me "my guy, you have been cursing the last couple of videos"
The writing for this bright side video sounds like a writing assignment I'd do at school.
1:21 here’s me eating cake for breakfast trying to be skinny 😂❤
Thanks for content like yours. I spent most of my teens and 20s trying to do crazy moonshot ideas over short periods. While that can be fine it has to be with making small changes that you can keep at long term. I only really started making progress a few years ago when I finally got that through my head. It's hard boring work and nothing is ever going to make it not be hard work.
I (male) did lose 30kg in a few months when I was in my early 30s, by eating well and exercising. My real victory was NOT putting all the weight back on once I put the chocolate and cheese and biscuits back into my diet. In fact, I kept on losing more weight, which was scary. Doing fine now, fortunately.
When you point out the off-season fruits... why? Cost? Carbon footprint? Are they less healthy?
Definitely need to be careful cutting down on salt or other nutrients. When I was in the Army at a training exercise it was hot, and I wasn't feeling well, so I kept drinking a bunch of water thinking I was dehydrated. I had a horrendous headache, and was feeling nauseous. I was finally taking seriously when I started vomiting and was brought to the medic. They didn't really do anything to treat me, but they let me take a nap in the AC, and when I wasn't feeling nauseous anymore they gave me some extra salty food and sports drinks. They figured since I had been drinking a lot of plain water that I probably had an electrolyte imbalance. Granted I wasn't trying to cut salt or anything, it just happened because I was working hard in the heat and misunderstanding my symptoms, but same concept applies in the end. Don't be cutting important things out of your diet, like salt, unless you consult with your doctor. Some bloating is normal and healthy. If it's uncomfortable and chronic though, that might be a reason to see your doctor and try to address the issue.
"Don't be cutting important things out of your diet, like salt, unless you consult with your doctor."
I'd argue it depends on the circumstances. You can know you're eating too much salt without seeing a doctor...if you're eating a bunch of fast food fries, adding salt to things like movie theatre popcorn, etc, and not drinking a ton of water, you're probably safe to cut back on the salt. That doesn't mean completely get rid of it, just avoid some of the extremely heavily salted things.
That brightside video had to be AI made in some way. it feels so unreal.
And the fact that people will comment that it worked while they obviously did more exercises at the gym
Here's your 'no hate comments' blessing. Also, Mike, can you give us an update on your current life as a doctor?
Any channel, or anyone, rather, that says you can lose X amount of weight in a ludicrously short amount of time is giving out misinformation. I lost 60 lbs, but that took me five months, not a week or two... with dietary or lifestyle changes.
Thanks Dr Mike for debunking this! 💪
Hey, if you have a limb removed or give birth to the child you're pregnant with you can lose significant amount of weight in a very short amount of time!
1:04. I understand what "screw the pooch" means as a euphemism. What is the meaning of "lose the pooch"?
Hi Mike would you please come up with the Psoriasis medicine vedio
three months ago I started eating like a shark, only when im hungry. I cant go to the gym cuz i had two car crashes, only messed up my shoulder and other one my knees... but since then, i try walking at least 7k steps and I lost 10kg since November. hopefully this info helps u if u wanna lose weight. Peace and love from Croatia!

The key to effortless weight loss is intermittent fasting... I got to eat whatever I wanted with little or no workout. By just making sure I fast for at least 20hrs or more each day and it's not like I was very consistent with it, I still had cheat days and its been 50 weeks since I started and there's a very noticeable difference, I've gotten to my desired weight and size and I still haven't changed anything in my diet the only difference now is that I know when to eat and when not to eat.
4:26 Or a period lol
What about that shredded metabolism guy that comes on in an ad before every other TH-cam video?! I'd love to see you talk about him 😅
Vshred? He's the biggest grift in fitness
I laughed so hard at the BS that just kept coming on the Brightside video - so glad I watched it with Dr. Mike 😂
Smaller portions more often reduces stomach stretching out and demanding to be filled
3:26 I AM NOT DOING THAT! :/
Really? I thought it was the only 'tip' that delivered; wouldn't call it exercise, but done long enough and some core muscles will get a work-out. (/s yes, it's hilarious that even the BS vid showed fingers on the belly button for that bit)
The main thing about cutting out foods is the reason. I've started trying to cut out the snacks I used to eat way too often and go to the gym more often to try to lose some of the fat that's been bothering me for years, but it's not because of the weight loss entirely, the main reason is that it's expensive so even if losing weight/fat isn't noticeable, I'm hoping it's effect on my bank account will be and being able to move more into savings because I'm not spending it on garbage will be helpful. I still do snack but not nearly as often like after a leg workout at the gym I got a box of raisins (because high protein/fibre and low fat) and tomorrow is probably going to the tiring so I might get a muffin on my lunch break, but the important thing is that I used to do the muffin every day and now I haven't done it for a week. Because I'm not worrying about calories and I'm buying less snacks for a different reason it's not affecting my relationship with food and making it unhealthy.
I...I got an ad for how to reverse type-2 diabetes in the middle of this video. The medical BS just never ends.
Excuse me WHAT😂 😂😂😂
The main thing about diabetes is that once you have it you can’t get rid of it 😂😂😂
@@LightninCharge Exactly!
The abdominal massage helps me poop 🤷🏻♀️ lol I love some of your reaction videos - thank you for the laughs :)
Doctor Mike, you should do a video over the recent Measles outbreak!! Please and thank you! 🙏🏽
Dr Mike got HEATED in this one!
The only thing Tumeric did for me (bought some green tea that had it on accident) was make me have to immediately poop way quicker than just tea does. So yeah, it helped with bloating, the same way coffee/tea/any other diuretic does. Nothing mysterious there.
Cat-Cow isn't even for the belly, it's a spine exercise 😂
Could you please make a video about your experience working with medical interpreters (if any) and even inviting some on your channel? As someone who wants to become one I would love an inside scoop!
i love Dr. Mike
Give mike an aneurysm challenge presents itself.
Shows him this video.

I would love to sit and watch you making these videos. You make me laugh so much as you yell at your computer! And you were helpful; too often I convince myself that I just don't have any motivation. Maybe I just need to take 30 seconds of action, and let the motivation come as I go!
I have lost 50 pounds over the last three years, reaching within the realm of my ideal weight. I didn't do any fad diet, or hit the gym for hours a day. There are three aspects to my approach. I stop eating when I'm no longer hungry as opposed to eating until I'm full. I walk everywhere within "walking distance"; for me, that's about a half hour walk. The third aspect is that I convinced myself that I don't like ice cream and other sweets. So essentially, I cut my calories, and increased my activity. It's that simple.
There are many videos which are spreading misinformation about exercising and fat loss in the internet.
Im just one stomach flu away from my goal weight 😂
2:18 after she done her research
So she removed sodium (which is what is in salt as per her comment) from her diet, then make a healthy drink with salt??? Yeah, I'm so confused. She basically just lost a bunch of water weight and thinks she did something permanent.
Reaction videos are still my fav.
Dr. Mike, I want to express my gratitude for the dedication you pour into crafting these videos. Your critical analysis of illusion promoters is invaluable. At the same time, it would be incredibly beneficial if you could also provide guidance on the proper methods. Wishing you continued success and looking forward to your insights.
I’ve had to learn that it’s not an instant miracle to lose weight as fast as you can. It’s important to be in shape, but it’s more important to be healthy overall, which includes eating well and working out often. If you want to lose weight to look good go for it!! This is what I feel has helped me have a better relationship with my body. It’s different for everyone.
Dr. Mike’s reactions crack me up 😂
Dr. Mike, one of your other videos asked for suggestions of tv episodes that we want to see you review. I am politely requesting the episode of scrubs entitled "my lunch", unless you've done it already. Please and thank you.
Well it sounds like a stomach massage is a great option to consider. It could help to alleviate problems that don’t need medical intervention.
This video is cracking me up! I hate that this woman did all this to get a compliment from a date?? Like girl be asked you out so obviously he liked the way you looked!
good point 😂 but also wow how harmful that is for people's mental health. Like "how I changed my life so one guy would like me".
4:15 bloating reason
Please never stop debunking popular videos promoting misinformation. Thank you dr Mike!
hello doctor mike . love your videos. My name is Bjarke and I am from Denmark. I have a bump on the top of my right shoulder right where the shoulders meet at the collarbone. but it gets bigger and bigger. and it started to get uncomfortable. my own doctor says it goes away by itself. but he is a very old doctor and he did not want to check it at all. what do you think it could be and what can i do. vh Bjarke from Denmark
I agree with eating less calories, walking more, and the exercises but that isn't what the damn title said! I feel bad for people who watch this non sense and become demotivated
And before you start calling this comment the subtitles of the video, I'm just expressing my opinions and insight to that video, and me and Dr Mike have similar opinions on this
What Mike said as the way to really try to lose weight(basically, live actively) is only possible in tiny usually expensive corners of the US. This reason alone imo is enough reason to tear down our excess car infrastructure and build places people can actually be
This video is like fake hypnosis . She wants you to believe you mustn’t do anything to lose weight but in background ,she is slowly convincing you to change everything
Turmeric, garlic and ginger are anti inflammatory
Cutting sugar, corn syrup and exercising moving more is all sound advice
They added the the adjective behind dieting and exercise. A walk or taking the stairs is not extreme it's very mild exercise. I do think strength training is something I should more of
Someone needed to call them out
5:15 The stuff that's in salt? I feel that's misleading. It's not wrong, but it's uninformative. This probably comes back to salt being labeled as 'sodium' on nutrition labels, even though sodium and salt mean two different things.
Very true, especially since anyone who remembers compounds knows that salt is a mix of sodium and chlorine.
Lmao I love how he’s roasting this vid… too good. Keep up the vids! We love them! And thank you for them
This video was PHENOMENAL! Doctor Mike had me crying with his reactions 😂😂😂😂 "thank God they wrote it on the computer or else I wouldn't have been able to follow along" dead
You should watch Brave Wilderness
I m doing a lot of strength training and vacuum abs training can reduce your belly… but not because it reduces bloating or the fat but it’s tightening up your midsection after a long period of getting a stronger midsection… so a little bit like a natural corset…
It helps to reduce a belly from bloating a bit but not your outer fat layer… (maybe your viszeral fat? -but when you have too much of that training your core muscles is not enough to do against that ❤)
Basically, this woman reduced her fluid and food intake for a week, and got more active. This led to a reduction in bloating (both through intra-/extra-cellular water content and abdominal gas) and stimulation of peristalsis through massaging and being upright for longer periods (letting gravity do its thing). She probably lost imperceptible amounts of actual fat tissue during this.
Among the other contradictions Dr. Mike pointed out, I had to snigger at her smoothie recipe which included salt and honey (high in bioavailable carbs) right after saying she cut down on salt and carbs.
Great advice for anything in life
The first red flag for me is the fact that it's a voiceover and not an on camera performance ("I" lost weight but who are you?). If you're not willing to put your face to it, then it's probably a lie.
Some will happily show their faces so the best way to fact check is to do a 5 mins search on google
I love how bothered you are at the video plus educating people! 😂
Dr Mike sounds like me when my friends tell me about their hacks to lose weight. It usually ends with me telling them that the things they are doing is stupid and won’t work and guess what, it doesn’t work🤦🏻♂️
To the point of the video, I had tried to lose weight for years with the help of doctors and diet and exercise and I couldn't do it. I did have to reduce the bloating and I did that by surgery to remove endometriosis and cutting out dairy and fried foods. For years I was told I was healthy while I kept gaining weight, I was told my hormones were perfect yet I had clear hormonal symptoms, and it took me digging through the depths of the Internet and finding a specialist to get help. I look so much thinner and have finally started losing weight for the first time in almost a decade.
For the first time in my 52 years I am overweight. It began with sudden svere back issues and other symptoms no one can figure out. I changed the diet but exercise is very limited. Depression has now crept in due to constant pain, being unable to do things I love and my body image. These types of life hack promises should be banned!
I thought 7:55 would end with her farting out all the air in her stomach like a volcano
I think another thing thats so discouraging in these videos is that you cannot find one diet or lifestyle change that will work for everyone. If you want to lose weight for health reasons, the way you do that has to be personalized to fit you, your limits, what your body is capable of and what your mind is capable of. I had to lose weight because of iih and you know what the biggest changes to my life are? Trying new foods because I have a lot of sensory issues with food and that had limited me to a small amount of "safe foods, and I have an eating disorder so cutting out food was a very risky option. And the second thing was to do my best to keep the job I currently have because its pretty active but not straining because i have a lot chronic pain. That is IT so far. And ive had to consult with myself, multiple doctors, my therapist and my parents to figure out what was best. And it took a while
I just heard a story about a man named Cole who fell into the Grand Canyon, sustaining massive head trauma, Two collapsed lungs, a broken neck and a broken back…… AND LIVED
What's wrong with walking and drinking water and making small eating changes?
Just a friendly reminder not to strain yourself!! I used to be able to workout for 20-30 minutes every day and do planks and lifts without struggle, now I have to take breaks and cut the time to 10-15 minutes a day. THAT’S OKAY!! The important thing is that you’re still working out, getting effects of your workout, and not pushing yourself to exhaustion😁❤️❤️
“It was so easy! I just totally changed my diet and activity.”
fun fact: when i was much younger i found this channel and it caused me to get body dysmorphia (as in bright side, not doctor mike)
I like how she was cutting down salt, but added a pinch of salt in her drink. 😅
Good video! Off topic though, I am watching Royal Pains on Amazon Prime and I have to say it......Dr. Mike, you remind me of Dr. Hank Lawson from the show. I imagine that would be you. 🙂
The best moments were seeing Doctor Mike's frustration. I feel you pain 😄
Hi doctor mike I love your videos
Thanks Doctor Mike.
Problem with these channels is that they face no consequence spreading false information and since most of them sre corporate channels, youtube wouldn't touch them.
Weight loss simply does not work like that. I myself am on a diet that Dr. Mike would unquestionably call unhealthy (500-1800 calories a day depending on how hungry I am that day) and even then I have only lost 50 lbs. in ~45-50 days. I still have another 10 lbs. for my first goal and 60 for my final goal which I expect to take till mid to late summer. You can't make a noticeable change in just a week.
I have a request Dr Mike, can you do a video on courage the cowardly dog medical scenes
