Golden Axe: The Duel is the FIFTH AND FINAL Episode of Golden Axe Series. The Chronology of Golden Axe follow this order: Golden Axe; Golden Axe II; Golden Axe III; Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder; Golden Axe: The Duel. The Plot of Golden Axe: The Duel, is: After Gillius Thunderhead sacrifices himself to kill Death Adder (GA:TRODA), Stern Blade, Dora, Goah and Trix concludes that the power of the Golden Axe is too dangerous for mankind, and they decide to hide away the Golden Axe from Yuria's people. The Heroes never told to anyone the location of the sacred weapon, and they all died without telling it. 80 years after Yuria's liberation, and Death Adder's final demise, the Golden Axe finally resurface, thanks to a group of explorers, but the greed for power make the explorers kill each other for it. To make the things worse, Death Adder is revived thanks to the efforts of the evil necromancer Zoma, the former Prime Minister of Lustania Kingdom, who fights with a staff and is an user of Dark Magic. Zoma's true intention on reviving Death Adder, is to get rid of all possible rivals for the possesion of Golden Axe. After it, Zoma plans to kill Death Adder and take the Golden Axe for himself, and he plans to melt the sacred weapon to make a powerful potion that will make him a God. To protect himself of a possible Death Adder's betrayal, Zoma brainwash the most powerful Elf Warrior of Crystal Haven, Keel, an Assassin wih great ability with knives and user of Ice Magic. Zoma makea Keel his personal bodyguard. To stop Death Adder's plans of Tyranny, a new fellowship is formed. Their members are: Milan Flare, the young queen of Winwood, and a descendant of Tyris Flare and Ax Battler. She uses a Saber and Wind Magic. Kain Blade, the young warrior of Draconia Village, and a possible descendant of Stern. He uses a Longsword and Fire Magic. Gillius Rockhead, the guardian of Guillegun Mountain and Great-Grandson of Gillius Thunderhead. He uses an Axe and Earth Magic. But there are other warriors that want to find the Golden Axe, for their own motives. They are: Jamm, the wanderer girl of the Wilderness. She uses Giant Claws, and Light Magic, via the spirit of Degas, who protect her. She want the Golden Axe to revive Degas and her dead parents. Doc, the most powerful shinobi of Miribar Island. He uses a Katana and Thunder Magic. He wants the Golden Axe to have power to cure any disease of the world. Green, the last survivor of an hybrid race of humans and plants killed by Death Adder, and guardian of Urupagu Forest. He uses his fists and Nature Magic. He wants the Golden Axe to make himself fully human, and marry Maria, the human woman he loves. Panchos, son of human father and giantess mother, and an inventor from Blo Province. He uses a Mace, Bombs and Iron Magic. He wants the Golden Axe to make his province a new kingdom in Yuria. The Fellowship fights and beats them all, including Keel, who joins the heroes after freed from Zoma's brainwashig; and Zoma, who is killed by Death Adder after the tyrant discovers the evil mage's plans of betraying him. But they don't know that the terrible truth about the Axe is about to be discovered. The Evil Energies of all the Tyrants that possessed the Axe weakened the seal that imprisioned a terrible mad God inside the Axe. In ancient times, a race of ruthless demons appeared from the darkness of the world and declared war against the gods. Both forces fought to a stalemate, and the war seemed to last forever. However, the tides of the war turned when a certain god created a powerful holy weapon capable of contain the power of the demons and drive them away, back to the darkness. That weapon was the Golden Axe. But after a long time, the god who created Golden Axe became mad about power, and started to kill every god who he suspected of trying to take his place, and tried to destroy mankind, who he considered irremediably evil and corrupted. His own son, Tarik, had to stop him, and he used a powerful magic to seal his father on the holy axe created by the mad god. Tarik left the Golden Axe in the hands of humans, and told them to only use its power for good deeds, because Tarik knew that the evil deeds of possessors of the axe would weaken the seal that kept his father sealed on Golden Axe. After the heroes defeat Death Adder, the Axe's seal is finally broken, and it morphs to a Golden Armor form, who is the Mad God finally freed, and ready to destroy mankind. Milan, Kain and Rockhead fights him, and they are joined by Jamm, Doc, Green, Panchos and Keel. After a long and dangerous fight, the heroes unleashes their powerful magics, who make the Mad God lose control of his own power, and ends sealed back inside the Golden Axe. The heroes see that the presence of the Golden Axe into the world of Yuria is a timed bomb that can destroy mankind, so they decide to seal the Golden Axe inside a giant stone and throw it into the sea. The Heroes decide that peace must be protected by mankind's own power and will and they dedicates themselves to keep the newfound peace forever.
Holy crap, the Saturn was able to render such detailed transparencies here. I am really impressed with this. Still, I wish they had also ported The Revenge of Death Adder.

not only the "Crash Zoom" effect from Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury but also the very distorted and agressive sound ^^ it was fully a SNK signature, and no it's not an insult SEGA and SNK were close, at this 90's period, but also Capcom work sometimes with SNK people after, you can feel it in Devil May Cry series for example, but those company develope there own style signature and gameplay school.
Before Capcom fighting games had screen-filled "Super Combos" / "Desperation Moves", Golden Axe: The Duel had them. Golden Axe fans, please look at this either as a side story, a spinoff or both. And it resembles Blandia and Samurai Shodown more than SFII.

Yes, or even better they could have released Revenge of Death Adder with this game as the duel mode. This game may have been ok as a game to play in the arcade, but would be nice with a bit more for a home port like a story mode.
This is an Arcade game. The ST-V and Saturn hardware are near identical, hence the Saturn version is arcade perfect. Saturn actually did 2D games pretty well. It was the 3D stuff that the PSX blew it away.
@@petrusamp7792 not sure if you will read this three years later, but the Saturn actually could have consistently had 3D graphics better than the PSX had. The problem was similar to what modern developers have when they have to use Frostbite Engine vs Unreal Engine. The Saturn was absolutely horrendous to program for, and pretty much no one was able to meet its potential. The best we got was in Virtua Fighter 2, which looked amazing for the time and better than anything on the PSX... But it is the only 3D game that looked that good on the Saturn. You can have the most powerful console in the world and it won't matter if no one can program for it
The graphics and artstyle in this game are pretty good, but they should have made it into a side-scrolling beat'em-up instead like the previous games in the series rather than a one-on-one fighting game imo.
It was kinda fun even though broken in a lot of ways...the moves could have used some editing. would have played that game a LOT more if the music wasn't so dang loud. As I recall it was linked to the sfx and couldn't be turned down separately. Also the FAQs *never* got the super moves right for Green and Death Adder.
