I would love to play this song with my daughter ( gtr pt 1 and 2). Kottke is one amazing cat. The fact that he hitch hiked around the country busking is just SO cool, and then getting discovered by John Fahey in Minnesota. Thank God for that.

One of his shortest tune but with an intense background melody that weaves in and out of the lead. Only this man could dream it up. Kudos Leo!

This is what I like to hear best; that when Leo picks up that guitar to start picking, it's hold on to your seats... Thank You!....

I'm in the midwest, and some years ago, one of the local TV stations had a really early morning newscast. When it came time for the farm report, some sly intern had put in about 6 bars of Stealing as an intro!

Thanks UKMikey! As the meme goes, men in overalls built this country, men in suits stole it. I've seen Leo play live twice. He is amazing and a very kind soul too!

I've seen Leo live 2-3 times. I told him if there were an illustrated dictionary, his picture would be beside two words: Artist and Droll. The man deadpans so well it's like he's daring you not to laugh!

All Bliss and Blessings to you, dear one! My only copy of the 'Mudlark' album is packed with all my other vinyl lp's. and here's me with a turntable that bit the dust after almost 30 years of faithful turning. 'Stealing' was, and still is, one of my top favorites from Kottke's albums, as hard as it is to pick favorites. Thank you so much for sharing this; it made the crappy weather here all better!

The overdubbing is better than a twelve-string could ever be!

So, I'm listening to this and kind of mad that I will never be able to play this good, and then by the time the song is over, I'm smiling. Who cares?

Correct me if I'm wrong. This is from Leo's fourth album. Capitol apparently wanted more instrumentalists in this session. Yet the documentation credits no other musicians on Stealing, just Leo. As someone below has suggested, we hear at least two guitars, so it seems Leo overdubbed himself. Leo wasn't easy for other players to jam with. I saw him with Michael Johnson one night. Johnson laughed and said, "When you play along with a guitar player, you often put music in the holes of what he's playing. But, man, with Leo there are no holes!"

You're wrong I'm afraid. All the tracks are on Mudlark as indicated.

Yes it's true, this track IS overdubbed - whole tune, key of C, 1st guitar (no capo) starts with the A part, then at :19, 2nd guitar (capo 3, A mode) joins 1st to play the B part and continues on together. Live, Leo starts it out in C then de-modulates to the key of A, then returns to the key of C - no capo live.

PS: slight oversight...he does that brief solo riff at :29 but I think it's still the 2nd guitar playing - the riff is not heard again. The high slide-ups are also 2nd guitar.
If there is a 3rd guitar (probably is...) it's capo 3, playing A,D and E chords in first position.

1st time I heard Leo, 1971, the DJ said, " folks, that was ONE guitar playing ! We saw him live a few months later at Harper Comm. College, it sounded like THREE clean guitars !
