Yes! BSG Reboot is one of the better remakes and upgrades. While it was still airing, a friend of mine who is a die-hard SciFi geek and his wife who absolutely hates all things SciFi were watching it. She was in the room working on hobbies at first, and then slowly, she took over and BSG became -- her -- show, and because her husband kept trying to talk about the sci fi elements, she banished him from the room when the new episodes were on because "he was interrupting HER show."
Best SciFi show until The Expanse.

You asked why the guy was running with his books and said that he should leave them. He's running with them because he understands human civilization is ending and he's trying to save some part of their past in case anyone survives. It's why you see people running into burning libraries or museums. They're trying to save a piece of humanity. That one shot of him trying to save the books is the most haunting image of the miniseries to me.

To explain terminology, the Galactica is a Battlestar (type), of the Jupiter class (this is never mentioned in the show). Battlestar is the equivalent to battleship + aircraft carrier.
She's the last battlestar from the first Cylon war still in service, with a prestigious story back then. Retiring her would've been a historic event. The end of an era. And the Cylons really made sure that day wold be the end of an era. I often wonder if they picked the day forthe attack to coincide with the decomissioning of that ship.
It's worth mentioning that one of the creators, Ronald D Moore, was an ensign in the US Coast Guard before becoming a tv writer, and that training shows.

Battlestar Galactica is one of those "Television Golden Age" shows like The Sopranos, Mad Men, Dexter and The Wire. It stands up today as among the best science fiction shows ever made. Battlestar, above all, is about the emotional journey of the characters. The plot sometimes wanders, but the characters are always true to their identities. It is one of the most brutally emotional shows ever written. And let me emphasize, it is brutal. It's hard to believe that it gets so dark. Not many shows actually have the courage to go there. But the end result is Fracking amazing. The finale to this long journey is brilliant.

Great to see you two moving on to BSG. I watched the original series when it first aired back in 1978. This keeps the concepts and characters but IMO blows the original away (pun intended). It's both character and story driven and does an excellent job with subverting expectations on both. It does get quite dark at times - Ron Moore (worked on Star Trek TNG, DS9 and Voyager ) wanted to get away from the sanitized world of Trek and came up with this along with David Eick (Hercules and Xena). It's one of the few sci-fi series that made me laugh and tear up in a single episode, and it did it many times. I retract what I said in an earlier comment on your channel: you've picked up some amazing shows and films to react to, and I'm coming around to your choices. Especially when they're as excellent as The Expanse, The Good Place, Community, and Battlestar Galactica.
As a child of the 80s, I appreciated you catching the red Cylon eye / KITT reference: Glen A. Larsen created both the original Battlestar Galactica and then Knight Rider.
This is a reboot (re-imagining) of the 70s show, so the main characters all carry over from the original-albeit with several changes that other commenters will undoubtedly discuss ad nauseam (though hopefully not until you've shared the second half of the miniseries).

    • @librarianists
      @librarianists 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@RamblersInc Not a continuation per se, just telling the same basic story in a new way. The reboot showrunners have their own themes and plotlines that they choose to follow, but the basic setup and most of the major characters all come from the original show.
Ronald D. Moore, one of the show runners, had worked on Star Trek extensively and part of the ethos of BSG is his reaction to that style of sci-fi narrative, especially Star Trek: Voyager. In Voyager, nothing ever sticks because the "reset button" is always hit at the end of each episode. Not so here! (Or in much modern TV.)
Also, remember that the miniseries premiered in 2003, so the September 11 attacks were pretty fresh. The concept of "the enemy could be anyone / the Cylons look like us now" is absolutely a theme that this show wants to explore. It wasn't part of the original series.
There's probably a little nostalgia factor with the old vipers and "chrome toaster" Cylon models you see from time to time-even the original show's theme song is worked in a few times as the Colonial theme (which played during the miniseries' "air show" fly-by). So the reboot definitely uses elements from the original show, and commenters will likely mention them when they happen. To say more would involve spoilers... 🤐 lol.
      Anyway, another great reaction! Thanks!

This show is amazing. Almost every character brings there A game when acting. A great show that touches on every thing. A drama that touches on every thing call it religion, drama, sci fi, etc. and to think it came out 20 years ago right after 9/11 it timed it so you will find yourself drawing a lot of comparisons to it. A good show that has a complete ending to it as well. It has 4 very good seasons without overdoing a show pas it its prime.

Real Newtonian physics - you are expecting the ships to fly like planes, but nope. Think The Expanse, until you apply thrust and impart acceleration into a new direction, your ship will keep on moving in the last direction it was moving. And facing is immaterial, except you can only apply thrust/acceleration to the ship's aft.

I am so glad you guys are doing this show, its an amazing sci-fi show ( imho the best sci-fi ever made ). I feel like this is right up your alley, you guys always have a meaningful conversation about the episodes and this show is perfect for that. Really well written, very complex characters and nobody's perfect. There will be characters with arcs that will blow your mind becasue it just keep on giving and it will change how you view them a few times. Think of Amos in the Expanse. How it started and where it ended.
I want to give you a quick rundown on stuff but I promise there will be NO SPOILERS regarding any character arcs or storyline, only some context about the BSG universe that comes handy going forward. Most of this is from other media ( wiki, games, other BSG content ) and some will be mentioned in the show later but its mostly technical data. And will address some of your questions as well. It's gonna be long though lol.
The tech in the show is grounded in reality, except a few things like their FTL ( Faster than light ) drive which is needed to serve the story, their artifical gravity on the ships, and some of the Cylon techs. The 12 colonies of Kobol ( you will learn more of their history later ) are 12 habitable planets in a Star System called Cyrannus. They were named after the 12 astrological signs. ( Picon = Pices, Scorpia = Scorpion, Caprica = Capricorn, etc... ) There are some ships that dont have FTL drive because it was not needed, mostly luxury passenger liner cruising in the system between the worlds, some industrial haulers and other utility ships.
Battlestarts are the core of the fleet, they are the main frontline ships with other combat and support ships around them forming a Battlegroup ( BSG = Battlestar Group ). The Galactica ( BSG 75) is an old ship, one of the first 12 Battlestars ( one for each colony, Galactica represented Caprica ) rushed into service during the First Cylon War. A Battlestar is a carrier and battleship hybrid, with a large complement of Vipers, heavy armor and armament. The Galactica supposed to carry 160 Vipers, but her starboard flightpod was turned into a museum so she has only half of that. Many of them were destroyed in the first wave of the attack using Baltar's CNP ( Command Navigation Program). There are no shields, lasers, phasers, or any fancy sci-fi stuff, they use projectile weapons ( like a tank or a navy ship nowadays ) with 2 types of shells. A simple impact fused shell that explodes when hits something ( this is the anti-ship ammunition ) and timed fuse that explodes after a certaion flight time, creating a wall of exploding fire and shrapnel thus covering an area from incoming missiles and small craft. You haven't seen them yet becasue the Galactica was about to be decomissioned and her armory is empyty thats why they're so desperately looking for an ammunition depot. They also have different missiles including nukes. Battlestars have very heavy armoring on the ships ( I'm talking meters thick layers ) so they can take hits for an extended period of time giving them a good survivability in battles and allowing them to take many hits and survive nukes.
Some stats for the ship. Its crewed by approx. 2900 people ( its designed to run with 5k people, a full complement of marines included ) but it was about to retire so they removed a lot of ammunition and fuel from it, converted the starboard flight pod into a museum and half of her small crafts was also removed. Even before the current events she was in for a big refit and they removed much of her armor, about 3/4 of her primary guns and a lot of her point defense weaponry, but make no mistake, she is still a very powerful warship.
    Here are the stats:
    Length: 4719.95ft (1438.64m)
    Width: 1761.29ft (536.84m)
    Height: 601.43ft (183.32m)
    Armaments: ~514x dual point-defense CIWS
    24x primary guns ( Battlestar Artillery )
    ~12x missile tubes

    1x active flight pod
    1x active flight deck, 617m (2,025 ft)
40x Viper Launch Tubes ( can launch 40 Vipers at once with those magnetic accelerators )
She has computer networks on board but they are isolated blocks separated from each other. Imagine systems like the Life Support computers, they are networked but they dont talk to the Navigation, Propulsion or Tactical networks. The CIC ( Combat Information Center ) is as the name suggests the center of the tactical and other information. Since it has no windows it doesnt have a traditional bridge like Navy Warships. It has an elevated area above the CIC which serves as the bridge but they are mostly in the CIC.
    - Raptors are small support craft designed as VIP transport for the fleet, and a very versatile recon ship with an excellent EWAR suite that can scout for fleets or go along with vipers to support them with EWAR during fights. There are more heavily armed variants with missile pods that can strike larger ships.
    - Vipers are the primary defense of the fleet against small craft and as you can see often used for missile defence.
    - Cylon Basestar
It's the Cylon's version of the Carrier-Battleship hybrid though not as armored as Battlestars. You didnt see much of them becasue the were split up between all the colonies and military installations and they didnt need much thanks to Baltar's CNP, an operating system used by both the navy and the civilian fleet. Most Battlestars and Vipers had it, though there was a few that were commissioned earlier that did not get that update yet. Those ships were either being scheduled to be decomissioned like the Galactica or were due to go in a refit and upgrade in one of the shipyards. This is the software the Cylons used to ( thanks to 6, the blond woman you've seen with Baltar ) get their virus past the firewalls and disable the Colonial ships. This made their attack so devastating because the Colonial Navy was unable to fight back.
    Height: 869.98ft (265.17m)
Armaments: 220 nuclear, conventional, and ballistic missile tubes
    434 Cylon Raiders

    Width: 3381.53ft (1030.69m)
    Height: 869.98ft (265.17m)

The ranks in their military is exactly like nowadays navy. The Flag officers on top ( Admirals, Rear Admirals ), they are often have operational command of a Battlestar Group, Commanders which are basically Commanding officers of Battlestars or other military vessels, Colonel, Liutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, Liutenant, Ensing, Cadet.
William Adama is a Commander in command of the Galactica, his 2nd in command ( XO, Executive Officer which is not a rank its a title or assingment ) is Colonel Saul Tigh.
The Chief ( Galen Tyrol ) is an NCO ( Non comissioned Officer ), he is in charge of the maintanance crew that maintains and repairs the spacecrafts, handling ammunitions, etc. He served on many Battlestars before ( Columbia, Atlantia, and Pegasus ) and he is a very experienced NCO.
Helo ( Carl Agathon ) is Boomer's ECO ( Electronic Countermeasures Officer ) his job is to handle the ECM suite and other sensors on the Raptor and taking off other workload from the pilot in tense situations.
This show came out 2 years after 911 and it had an obvious effect on it. Those 80 people working on DC ( Damage Control ) might as well be firefighters in the WTC. Tigh had to make a difficult call there but ultimately it was the right one. The ship got hit by a nuke, the fire was spreading means they were losing control of it. In space they have the luxury to vent the air to space thus instantly stopping fires. If the fire reaches certain critical compartments ( FTL fuel, ammo storage, ) it will casue a catastrophic explosion and they lose much more than 80 peoples. There are 2700 peoples aboard. If it explodes they will lose most of those people. In combat you often have bad, worse and a very bad choice to choose from. You have to choose the best of those. The worst kind of leader is the one who cant or wont make a choice. That person will get a lot of people killed. You could see him hesitating for a moment but making the call. Thats what leaders do. They make the call hoping it was the right one because they have to live with it. Good leaders feel that weight. It wasnt the easy one but it was the right one becasue he saved the ship. That 40 seconds more the Chief asked for might have been too much and end up destroying the ship. From the Chief's POV this might look cruel but this is what it means to be in charge, you have to look at the bigger picture. 2.7k people is a lot more than 80.
In space, inertia is everything. You dont need to continously thrust in order to move because there is no atmospheric resistance. Every ship is able to fly as fast backwards as they do forward, just cut thrust and flip the ship over. You will see that the fights in this show is very realistic in terms of maneuvers. Small craft uses every axis of movement unlike other shows wher they only maneuver on the same plane. In the Expanse the Rocinante was a corvette and was around 2500 tonnes. I always wondered what kind of thrusters she had to maneuver like that. No idea how much a Viper MK VII weighs but you can see their size compared to a person. They look slightly bigger than a large fighter nowadays but add all the life support, the 3x engines, weapons, etc, lets say triple it so its about 90 -100tons. They flip over ( do a 180 ) in 0.35 secs. Thats pretty responsive if you ask me. :)
Battlestars are huge beasts naval battleships are a good comparison except these are 1.5km long so they maneuver slowly and have a good coverage of point defense guns so compensate for the lack of maneuverability.
As for the scene when 6 snaps the baby's neck....think about it. I agree that its horrible but remember she knew that a nuclear holocaust is just hours away. Maybe what she did actually saved that kid from going through a lot worse. I'm not saying thats what happened but its an angle worth take a look at.
Remember how the Expanse eased you in at the beginning, them picking up the SOS of the Scopuli, going to take a look, etc... This ain't like that lol, it starts out with a holocaust and will not let up for a while. The pilot episde ( S1E1) 33 is insane. When you go forward pleae keep one thing in mind at all times when you think about motivations. This is a fight for survival not just a conventional war. The Cylons came to end the human race for good. What is the line that you would not cross if those were the stakes?
Really looking forward to your journey through this show and imma tell you it'll be a wild one. I wish I could delete all memories of it and start it fresh. Watched it over 20 times. I keep upgrading the medium as technology advances, first I downloaded every episodes as they aired ( it was not available where i lived ), then bought the collectors dvd, then the bluray and will continue this trend with the next tech. Can't wait for the next one guys.

I mean neither sides have shields so its not an issue since both sides using weapons that are really compareable. Also, the Galactica literally have meters thick armor on her prow so I wouldnt be worried much either. :)
One of the really good thing about this show is the continuity of the damage on the ships ( and people lol ). You will see damage from seasons before becasue repairing armor layers require a drydock in a shipyard which they dont have.

Best TV show (any genre) ever!
My take on the "refugee lottery" scene with Baltar: We already know he is the most selfish and unprincipled person ever. He was definitely considering stealing the winning ticket (evidenced by his long pause). Once Helo recognized him, he immediately and correctly realized that, with all eyes on him, his chances of stealing the ticket are much diminished, but, as a famed A-lister he may have additional opportunities to be rescued. So, the smart play is to make a public display of his "honesty", give the lady her winning ticket, and wait for those additional opportunities to roll in (as they immediately did).
BTW: Something I noticed that none of the other reactors or comments I've read anywhere -- the lady who says she misplaced her glasses, they were right there above her hairline!!

@@RamblersInc Despite being wonderfully made cybernetic creatures, Cylons do have real feelings. Heck they even have their own religion so they know killing is a sin. But like any extremist they are capable of horrible acts in pursuit of their beliefs.
Sidenote: The Cylons are monotheistic while the humans of the Twelve Colonies are polytheistic.

A technical detail: nukes cause EMPs by compressing the air at enormous speeds, causing electrons to dislodge. But an important component is air. A nuke in vaccum won't cause an EMP, or an overpressure shockwave. It's a lot less effective as a specaborne weapon than a planetary WMD.
Not that many shows take those pesky details in consideration. Galactica didn't, here.

consider doing a series on the fallout adaptation on prime that was aired recently. it has some shortcommings when it comes to lore, but it has a really high production value, and seems all in all good, particularly considering it's a game adaptation.
galactica has it's fans, but fallout is currently red hot. there will be definite more ppl looking for that.

Thanks for the heads up. That looks good too. I've only really played Fallout 2 and 4 (because I'm weird like that). I'm sure I'll love it. Hopefully we can get to it soon.

Battlestar Galactica -- on the surface, is what you've seen until now .
However (no spoilers) as the show progresses it takes a different track to most if not all sci-fi shows with a parallel story line that is both Meta and quasi religious -- something that both delighted and frustrated both atheist and religious viewers -- who while getting a terrific story that they loved, didn't always get the interpretations that they expected ... -- based on what sci-fi has been up until this show, with Star Trek being mostly atheist (with a false god here and there) , and Stargate actually going full on war with beings calling themselves gods .
Based on those experiences , a show that had a promotional picture of the characters in the style of The Last Supper (that you mentioned seeing) , was very far off from what viewers at the time were used to .
