    • @L_Martin
      @L_Martin ปีที่แล้ว +5

      How were they rude? I guess I can imagine old people living out in a remote rural place might seem rude to outsiders, because they are probably fearful. Living in the UK, I think I can imagine older people in the countryside wouldn't exactly be open and delighted if meeting a foreigner who especially looked different to them and did not speak English easily. I don't want to say they'd be purposefully rude, but definitely fearful I think, they'd be wary. Old people don't feel as confident, they can't protect themselves as easily as young men, and they get taken advantage of a lot.
      Also just being real, they're more likely to have grown up in their rural village if it's in England, and speaking just from my perspective, they don't like influxes of new people into a village they knew from being children, especially "foreigners" settling there. Older people are more likely to be conservative, again, they are wary, and they resent a village or town that was their home starting to look totally different, culturally, to the point of being unrecognisable.
      Obviously that's an English perspective, but I suspect there's stuff in common with Korea, given how radically that country has been expected to adapt to cultural change.

    • @vatefairefoutre0
      @vatefairefoutre0 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I definitely don't doubt you met rude older people. sometimes their behavior would baffle me. I swear I had an ajumma literally ram into me when there was a mile of space around (it felt intentional almost? lol)... and older people stopping to stare at my black friends like animals in a zoo... yikes. yet on the other hand after living in Korea for years... some of the kindest people I ever met were older Koreans as well. I've also had ajummas randomly buy me ice cream after I picked up something they dropped for them, and one lady who was a complete stranger staying in the same hospital room as me and didn't even speak to me (lol) who bought me slipper shoes and snacks when I had to stay there for 3 nights after a simple surgery. honestly sometimes I miss them haha... grumpy and spoiled American boomers bitching about every little thing (oh trust me you know the types lol) make older Koreans seem awesome and so strong personally for me haha.

      @@L_Martin how rude is rude? I remember a girl posted a video years ago where she said she was visiting Korea. She is Korean by birth but moved to the US at an early age. So her spoken Korean is not the best. She said while out there were two older Korean women who were commenting on her Korean and took offense when she did not understand certain words. One of the women said she wished she had a knife so she could stab that girl just because she was not fluent or the women thought she was acting like she can't speak Korean.

    These youngsters are the future. What they dont like they can influence by not behaving that way. Opening the door for someone, being kind to those who have less than you or who aren't pretty, slim or have money and diverting bullying is just basic care. Every simple action of kindness can pay that kindness forward. Try it next time you are driving on a busy road, slow down and let someone out of a side road, invariably they will show the same road etiquette to another vehice further down the line. Manners cost you nothing but can make someone whole day brighter.

    I will say as a Korean American, that native Koreans do have a problem with how they treat people they view as inferior to them in their own society. So the comment of how they treat each other is true. A lot of people look down on people in the service industry whether that's being in customer service, being a janitor, driver etc and treat and talk to them as such. To me that's inappropriate and I wish people would treat each other more equally or at least respectfully no matter what job you hold.

    I lived in Korea for a year. During that time, I worked at a nightmare of a private school with openly racist staff. Although my Korean co-workers were lovely, I found that strangers were either skittish around me or whispered behind my back. One time, I fell down on the street and everyone looked at me, but went on walking. Comments at work were always about my appearance (asking me to do my hair more "innocently" and to wear makeup). I lived on the same street as a plastic surgery clinic that said "Are you ugly? We can help!" It's A LOT of pressure to look a certain way and even if you are able to, people criticize you for it. One year was enough.

I lived in the US and I'll always remember that when I didn't have enough battery in my phone, litteraly everyone on the streets were willing to help me. Once, I got lost somewhere and even the Walmart cashier helped me finding my way. I walked in the streets and people said hi to eachother. A random lady asked me if everything was alright when she saw that I was sad one day despite not even knowing me. Americans tend to smile more and focus on helping eachother if they can (ofc not all of them but it does happen).

I think they can look unfriendly because they are strict and won't show a smile in the process. And what does it mean to pay for every stop at the airport? Did they ask for money they shouldn't? I'm sorry she had an unkind experience but I think it's hard to generalize. Among the foreign population of Korea Vietnamese are the second largest after Chinese. Married immigrants are the most. There are also many international students. It's hard to say that they all have bad experiences in Korea. If you look at TH-cam or TikTok they have a big community here and if the visa is legal they are getting the same salary as Koreans and most of them seem to be satisfied with life here. And they are very active in the exchange of opinions on how illegal immigrants can avoid crackdowns on TikTok. If they had more negative experiences in Korea there would not be so many Vietnamese who want to come to Korea while staying illegally.

Many points that were mentioned in the video are simmilar here. Especially the being nice to each other thing....

    As a Korean who left Korea (Not because I hate the place but because of my oen career), I think the biggest problem for Kotea is: people lost cause or direction.... money become the reason and goal of life and only measurrment to compare each other... while it is only a tool to do what you want or tool to what you want to have, prople forgey ehat they want to do or what they really have but only pursuit for money and does not really know what they teally want to do or have when they actually have it. The irony of treating everyone as equals is, if we are equal, then I owe you nothing. In a family, we have hierarchy. But the father doesn't just take everything because he has a duty to care for his wife, his elderly parents, his young children and even his siblings. In a society of equals, nobody has a duty to anyone else.
    This idea of "equality" is new in the US. When the US had a strong middle class we didn't talk about equality like now. This change brought with it the massive homelessness and wealth inequality we see in the US today.
    Its strange that people can't see how this works. Duty and obligations are not necessarily bad. But in the US today, they are taught that "freedom (from duty and obligation)" or "freedom (as consumer choice)" are the highest goals.

I wish Koreans would stop giving plastic surgery because they were already born beautiful. Why do you want to mess up perfection? another form of surgery is girls getting their calf muscle reduction surgery that’s just crazy that’s just really bad for your health. Just stay the perfect individual you are. I would also say please be open minded towards biracial children if their parents are of a mixed race. The children should not have to suffer discrimination. It is pathetic how America allowed racism to last for so many years I would hate to see racial bigotry take hold in a country like Korea, because in my opinion, that I am sure that their education system is better than most of the west.

From elderly people (because that's what you always hear about) But these people were genuinely the kindest to me, I've had elders wave and smile at me when I would sit in a cafe drinking a cappuccino. I would walk up Namsan Tower, and take pictures and videos along the way, and an old elderly women who hiked up aswell, stopped near me. Smiled and asked me whether I found it all beautiful.
    I told her yes and we sort of got to talking, she asked me where I was from, why I was in Korea as a Dutch person, what kind of work I do. All in very hard and broken English, but they were all very kind to me. PEOPLE MY AGE ON THE OTHER HAND (I'm 25) Like they'll straight up ignore your existence, I have never felt so ignored and lonely in a big city before. Nobody looks at you, nobody acknowledges you, I've nodded and said hi to people on the street, no response, they would walk up your way on the sidewalk and not move out of the way at all, whilst looking you straight in the eye.

    I think the ppalli-ppalli culture, seniority & high competition culture must be changed, because that is what makes koreans sensitive and easily stressed.
    A korean youtuber also once said that koreans are also "obliged to have the same thoughts, otherwise they will be considered strange". So koreans also have to learn to accept the differences that exist, at least among koreans first. It can change "the bad high standart" in korea and people can more comfortable to share their thought and show their real self.
    As long as those things exist, I don't think korea is a good country to live in.

I have someone I pay to sit in my home while my children sleep and my husband and I are at work. That is the only time we get help. As a korean that has lived in australia pretty much all my life, i cannot assimilate to korea. I love korean culture and traditions but the work and social cullture is so bad that its almost depressing. Everything is so fast paced and there is way too much competition compared to Australia.
    I stayed in korea for a month and my attitude started changing and i just started hating other people.

    Been in Seoul twice, last visit for 5 weeks in February. I'd say Koreans are more go-getter than Japanese, and that for me is good that they are more direct in their actions.I found no problems with everyone I dealt with.

    As a Korean I can’t stand how in the Korean culture, Koreans greet each other by describing how the other person looks to them.
    Examples:
    “Long time no see, wow you’ve gotten really fat.”
    “Hi, oh wow you’ve gotten so pretty. You lost a lot of weight.”
    “Oh your face looks really tired today, is everything ok?”

      This is clearly what I feel. That’s why I won’t be able to survive in Korea. I stayed one month but I was already exhausted mentally because many are so obsessed with their apparence and judging others based on that. The women toilets in Korea left me speechless. They all put make up, check the mirror …
      One thing that annoyed me, why do they always touch their hair? 😅

    Every country have good and bad side, there’re something that I like and dislike in Korea. I’m lucky to find good people willing to help me during my trip but there’s one thing I dislike this year…it not happened to me directly but to Chinese foreigners at chain restaurants inside the boarding gate. We’re foreigners doesn’t know well about Korea regulations, that family having trouble with order machine but no staff get outside the counter to help them (last year I’ve experienced that too but I saw that I can order and take slip pay at counter), other foreigners and me have to help them. They order takeaway but then eat inside the restaurant, staff yelling to them without explanation…I really feel bad for them, they can’t communicate in English either while I tried to explain with google translation, staff approached and changed the glass for their drinks. And they’re with kid, I understand language barrier but the manner to them still bad.

    Some older Koreans have prejudice against foreigners -- uhmmm im not sure about this. First time travelling to korea alone and an Older couple approached me 😂 they were so friendly. Even the next day, went to hongdae , older guy talked to me😂. Its actually the younger ones who are abit snob tbh😂

      He said some older people have stereotypes. And that's true. The cases in which foreigners are most directly affected are mostly cases of older people

    Japanese do tend to work very slowly. But they also are expected to arrive early and leave late and spend a huge amount of time with coworkers after work as well. So it's not all balanced in Japan either :)
