    Just remember America is the accumulation of immigrants from every part of the world, Including Germany. People should be careful on how they say things. Although I do agree everyone has a voice and an opinion. We also "dont visit other countries" that much, at least myself because it is very expensive and also the only two countries we are somewhat close to is Canada and Mexico. We dont exactly have as many options to a complete massive culture and language change as people do in Europe.

    • @Falcon988
      @Falcon988 9 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Truth. I'm always rather annoyed when people rag on us for not traveling more. We're in the middle of two oceans, even economy plane tickets to get across them are extremely expensive for your average person. I'm sure we'd travel a lot more of it was as accessible for us as it is for Europeans.

    Thank you for adding captions in both German and English. This was one of the few occasions when I could understand people speaking colloquial German -- complete with occasional grammatical errors and with people revising their thoughts in mid sentence -- which is the way that real people speak everywhere else. This is the first "Easy German" video that I've watched. Very helpful. I'd love to see more such videos of chats with random people -- in shops, on the street, etc. German as it's actually spoken, not just the textbook version.

  • @davids1816

    I liked the video because it showed a range of people and most didn't seem to realize they were talking to an American because his German is pretty amazing. I'm glad that you put some happy and some unfriendly responses because it gave a cross section. German is not 86 million USA cheerleaders, nor is it a country of angry and unfriendly people. Most of the Germans I've met were like the guy who studied in Detroit. Open minded and thoughtful people who also hope Germany is getting more respect as it gains influence.

    This is obnoxious, but the context-free question kinda asks for it. I recognize, too, that if you go to an American city and ask people what they know about Germany or Germans, you're likely to get a similar mix of ignorance. Never mind asking an American about Asia or, goodness gracious, Africa. I'm afraid this sort of myopia is common to the human condition everywhere.

      I don't think that most Germans are sad that the Nazis were defeated. My own father was from Krefeld. I do, however, know that there are a few old Germans who sympathized with the Nazis and resent the fact that their completely insane ideology was destroyed by nations with slightly more sense. The old man in this video seems like one of them. He is the old Germany; self-righteous, racist, xenophobic, pretentious, and utterly ridiculous. I lived in Germany a few years ago and found most Germans to be among the best citizens of our planet. Hopefully, psychos like the old man in this video are just a temporary anachronism.

      Well, if that old man really is still upset because of ww2, then yes, that man is a shame. Because he should know that the allies made Germany a free and democratic country. But of course we don't know his experiences with America(ns). I myself have never ever met a German who hates America for helping to beat the nazis. Germany and big parts of Europe would probably be a brutal dictatorship with no human rights if the nazis had won, and I wouldn't want to live in a nazi world. I would even say thank you to old ww2 veterans who fought nazi Germany.

      It may help to consider that, often, the words Germans have for themselves aren't much kinder either. There's a reason the very notion of being proud of their nationality is so problematic for them.

      no we don't, we just hate the stereotypes that we get like we are narzis and the stupid question like: "You're german so why Are You Not wearing a Dirndl?" (- because it's just something we Do on Oktoberfest.) so just don't ask stupid questions don't talk about hitler (who was btw from austria Not germany) and if you ever try to speak german don't scream or act aggressiv because thats just really rude
      but if you do nothing of this things germans won't have a problem with you ... ☺☺☺ we don't hate americans (as long as you aren't Donald Trump - than we hate you)

    Wow, I used to like Germany and the German people in general, but seeing how so many of them have a bad image of Americans and America as a whole makes me rethink things.
    It's one thing to say something about people's cultures or habits, but it's surprisingly how these german people quickly call the typical American stupid, fat, superficial, and a bunch of other insults, etc....
    Is it jealousy? Hated? Arrogance? Nationalism? Rude cultural upbringing in Germany? By parenting? I don't know.

    What America is to Germany.
    -
    Its like a father who helped raising us who guards us from bigger dangers and who tells us what to do and who isn't seeing us as equal.
    -
    Its like a big brother who always got the cool stuff before we do, who we admire and look up to...plus the big brother from 1984.
    -
    Its a creative but crazy uncle that we laugh at and that we stopped taken seriously and we are happy that he just visits us even if we look forward to his calls.
    -
    Its like the bully we chummed up with and that we are often ashamed of if he bullies other kids, that we feel morally superior to, but cheer if he bullies someone we doesn't like either.
    -
    Its like a younger brother who isn't ever listening to us, even if we have seen a lot more, who thinks we are old and boring, and who want to live live to the fullest and did some of the stupid stuff we have done.
    -
    Its like a girlfriend who wants to control us, control how we talk and what we wear, who snoops to our closet but who got also world class tits and a winning smile.
    -
    Its...well...its not russia or china.

I've lived in Zurich and London and have heard similar opinions, and yes, I agree Americans should learn German and learn more about their culture--there is so much to learn! Another great episode, guys. Danke.

    I kind of feel like the people who had negative thoughts about the US were people who have never actually been to the US.
    The people who have been here kind of know that we are open to outsiders and open to seeing the world. We have the money to travel, and we do love to travel, it's kind of strange to say that we don't like to get out of our country much.
    Another thing, about the US trying to rescue the world. We actually DID become isolationists and vowed to stay out of European business for a period after WW1. This was because after WW1, Britain and France was like "Yo USA get out of here, we don't need you anymore. We want to destroy Germany with the Treaty of Versaille because we hate them" and ignored any peace talk that American President Wilson suggested. So President Wilson came back the USA and the USA on its own for a couple reasons (that are not important to explain) decided it was better for us to not get involved with Europe.
    BUT THEN ALL THESE TOTALITARIAN DICTATORS STARTED RISING OUT OF NOWHERE (like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin), and when we continued to be isolationists, we were criticized by European countries for not taking action when all this shit was happening.
    PS. 35% of America is obese. I know that's still a big number, but to say ALL of us are fat? Come on. |: But then again I live in South California where we are known for our mountain of fitness centers.
    P.S.S. I know Nazis are kind of a dead political party, so don't think I'm trying to push the whole holocaust thing onto you guys, because I know that was a long time ago and none of you were responsible for it.

    • @christinenguyen4098
      @christinenguyen4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also not to mention it's so much harder to be exposed to different cultures in America. A three hour flight in Europe brings you to a completely different country. A three hour flight in the US brings you to another area in the US. Sometimes, all we seem to have is our growing racial diversity to help us become more cultured.

    • @christinenguyen4098
      @christinenguyen4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And yeah, American history really is an extension of European history, like someone below said. As a country, we are definitely not nearly as old as y'all countries in Europe, but the first people to essentially come here (we're going to ignore the whole Native American stuff) were immigrants from Europe who were seeking religious freedom and new opportunities.

    • @christinenguyen4098
      @christinenguyen4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LAST THING: THE ATOMIC BOMB
      Not to be offensive, but Albert Einstein feared that the Nazis were almost finished creating the atomic bomb and urged the US to take action and make the atomic bomb themselves. Does that justify bombing Hiroshima? Absolutely not. Did Einstein regret having a hand in the creation of the Atomic Bomb? Yes. But it's kind of scary to think about what would've happened if the Nazis got a hold of it first, don't you think? '__'
      And now we're trying to reduce our number of atomic bombs. I really doubt we have any other purpose of using the atomic bombs now other than for self-defense from other countries.

      "We have the money to travel, and we do love to travel, it's kind of strange to say that we don't like to get out of our country much."
      I'd just like to preface that I have nothing against Americans and I consider them very friendly, social and open, but your implication that americans go abroad alot is not completely true. Read the first two paragraphs of this article with statistics from the of travel and tourism industries: www.greatbigscaryworld.com/why-dont-americans-travel-abroad/
      26 millions of trips abroad (not counting Canada and Mexico) out of a population of 318 million. The numbers for say Sweden is 8.5 million trips abroad (not counting neighbouring countries or daytrips) out of a population of 9.5 million. I completely agree that one of the reasons for the low numbers is that it just costs alot more and takes a lot longer to travel overseas from the US than many other countries.

    • @christinenguyen4098
      @christinenguyen4098 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      StillRooney Ohhh, thank you! I can admit I was a bit jaded about that. As I said before, I live in Southern California, and I think down here we have some of the most racially diverse communities in our country. I have many friends who like to visit their families in other countries once or twice a year but I guess that is not as much as I thought it was.

  • @sheepdogsherlock1311
    @sheepdogsherlock1311 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    It bothers me when people hate on America and haven't even stepped foot in the US. The US has more nationalities together than any other country. People like that man at 2:40 probably have yet to step foot outside their own country and seem to still be very close minded, and seem to have a Germany is for Germans mentality (or any country for example).
    Sure I dont care for American cities or our government but there is so much here to see and do its a vast land. The guy at 2:15 is very accurate in saying you can't label typical in America is correct. Its unfair to label an entire nation build from every nation of the world as "Stupid" its a very ignorant thing to do, and the very ancestors of just about every Europe nation are the founders of this country. We are not perfect nor will ever be, but I dare any country to house the nationalities that represent us. I believe that is what sets the US apart.
    Also I want to say something about someone saying American's don't like to leave their country. It's easy for a European to say that when you can travel to dozens of neighboring countries. If America was Europe and each of our states was a country (which in Europe most of them are the size of our states) it would be just as easy for an American to visit many countries. Our continent has 3 major Countries, Europe alone has 50 countries I know of, so stop criticizing Americans for not leaving their country, not everyone can pack up on a plane to another continent. In Europe you can drive a hundred miles and be in another country, in the US you drive 100 miles and your in another state.
    So again don't compare apples to oranges, if roles were reversed and the EU were a country and the US was made of 50 countries then we would be ones who are always visiting other countries.

There were actual efforts to build bridges and to heal our countries after so many millions of people, many of them absolutely innocent, suffered and died. My grandmother, an American of German/British ancestry (she was a proud American who was just as proud of her German and British ancestors) showed me the letters her children received, and they were full of kindness and hope and gratitude, from both sides.

    After living and working in 5 different countries so far I can say that USA is the country of very friendly and helpful people and beautiful nature and a big country. But if anyone from western Europe hears this is the richest country in the world they can only roll their eyes and laugh. Yes you are a huge economy and huge market (like China is) but for millions of people living and working full time in USA things like traveling, healthcare and education are a luxury and you have to be pretty rich here to meet the quite normal European standards. And regarding traveling - how can you not effort this? Does it cost the European people to come here a half of what it cost you to go there? No. You just must have no interest. Most of my European friends have been in America at least once, many of them few times, some come regularly like for skiing in the winter and shopping because of cheap clothes and they all say the same - beautiful nature, nice people but a very low standards and poor quality country, where most of the people eat junk food and live in junk homes out of wood sticks and card board and with roofs covered with shingles. While they try to install 6 inch thick triple glass windows in their new homes and want to have a high tech kitchen with self closing light illuminated drawers, you still have windows as energy safe as a picture frame from Ikea and a kitchen, like a German grandma would buy probably 30 years ago - and it looks like this even in expensive million dollar homes ;). So relax, it's all not that bad and not everyone hates Americans, but you cannot just believe you are the best and richest country in the world, as it's the sign that you didn't ever leave it and haven't seen much ;). And stop saying things like "the most important man in the world" - which you can hear in every second action movie about the American president. WTF? Is there something like the most important man in there world? I'm sorry, but this has to be called arrogant ;)

    I love this channel, but I have to be honest, there are a small number of episodes (like this one) that encourage stereotypes and really bring out some ugliness not only in the people who are being asked these kinds of questions but in the comment section on youtube. Encouraging stereotypes seems counter to the mission of inclusivity that I've come to respect in Easy German and I hope that future episodes will remain inclusive and refrain from encouraging this regressive kind of dialogue.

    So many hypocrites. I'm glad I don't meet any Europeans who treat and speak to people like that old man. How can you speak to someone like that and have the nerve to even point your finger at someone else?!?
    I've have plenty of European friends, and none of them have been anything but awesome. I really hope Europe isnt prejudice. Otherwise my dream to visit just went up in flames.

      A friend of mine was in the US and in a restaurant a group of people wanted a new table because they didn't want to sit next to "Nazis". There are black sheeps everywhere, just go and make your own experience and you will see, 95% of the people are friendly, no matter where you go! ;-)

    I don't get that.. I am not American and I don't much care how Germans think about Americans.. But obviously you cannot be dumb and have the strongest economy, military, and educational system at the same time. Trying to downgrade people and judging them with no fair assessment on the other hand, is something I find silly and nonsensical. .

    • @414aliha
      @414aliha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Mátyás Hajba Ok .. what I am saying is based on the scientific facts. Considering GDP as one of the economical indexes, US has the highest GDP almost twice as China and a little smaller than all European countries in Total. The military budget of America is more than the sum of the next 9 countries combined including Russia, China, UK, ... The best universities of the world based on the most valid ranking systems are from US.
      As mentioned earlier, I am not American and I don't give a fuck, just please do your research first and then get emotional!

    • @SirPinkington
      @SirPinkington 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      414aliha America is also in crippling debt, and furthermore China will be surpassing America's economy in the coming years. Furthermore, on the topic of universities, depending on source Oxbridge > Ivy League Schools or Ivy League Schools > Oxbridge, I'd personally consider them equal. Military budget means nothing anyways, seeing as Russia or China or Britain could take us on in a fair fight (particularly Russia because the possess similar nuclear power).

    • @414aliha
      @414aliha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      SirPinkington If you knew anything about economy, you wouldn't consider national debt as a sign of bad economy. Regarding the military power, I don't need to prove myself, u can easily google that from any source you want. Regarding the educational system, it is not the matter of comparison. The total number of well-established universities in America is way higher than other countries. In addition, US has been the host of many scholars from all around the world for decades which technically leads it to outperform in science, economy, and technology when compared with other rivals.
      All in all, I believe the mindset of degrading America is stemming from RACISM. That's all!

    • @414aliha
      @414aliha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mátyás Hajba First of all, . If you would perfectly understand what i meant I said the mindset of downgrading other people originates from racism and it is a clear fact. So this is up to you to consider yourself as a person with such a mindset or not. Second, I did not even address you in my statements. chill dude!

      sorry man but this is very untrue. America has a HUGE history. Before it got colonized by European it has it's own history and after it has nearly immediate huge influence on the history of the whole world. It has always been a leader in nearly all branches of the civilizatorian development. America is still miles ahead and unreachable. To say that America has very little history is pure ignorance and barely hidden envied hatred. It insults Germany and not America. It was said by the old man whose history is a deep shame and insult not only for Germany but for the mankind.
