  • "The Logical Song" is a song by the English rock group Supertramp that was released as the lead single from their album Breakfast in America in March 1979. It was written primarily by the band's Roger Hodgson, who based the lyrics on his experiences being sent away to boarding school for ten years. The song became Supertramp's biggest hit, rising to No. 7 in the UK and No. 6 on the US Billboard chart.
It was a very personal song for Hodgson; he had worked on the song during soundchecks, and completed the lyrics and arrangement six months before proposing it to the band for the album. In 1980, Hodgson was honoured with the Ivor Novello Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for "The Logical Song" being named the best song both musically and lyrically. "The Logical Song" also has the distinction of being one of the most quoted lyrics in schools.

To me this song is about having an identity crisis and unfortunately it rings so true to me. I joined the Army at 17. After serving 20 years and looking around now I ask myself why. I believed in freedom and patriotism. Exhausting days and sleepless nights doing my duty. Now I am labeled as a thought criminal if I say those beliefs. It hurts that I can't remember who I was before that. This song is exactly what I feel and ask myself. Almost every day.

Then "someone" labels you with PTSD and gives you drugs to get you before you get yourself. Went in the military in 1971 got out in 1991 drove a truck (over the road) for almost 20 years. Been married close to 50 years and the Government wants to give me stuff cc as long as my grandchildren will pay for it. RETIREMENT AIN'T ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE.

Some songs required thought when you listened. Such an honest song, full of questions, I remember listening so much when this was on FM Stereo Rock Music Channels, often heard on the Interstate thoughour the United States, I loved the questions of this song, it required thought and consideration of the available evidence. Great Song when it was released back then, Good song for today.

If any wonders what's the point of this song, I believe it's this: Don't forget or shun your inner child (the longer it's repressed, the harder it is to dig out) and learn how to play the game of American capitalist life while letting the world play you as little as possible. "This is cliche, but with most cliches there is a profound wisdom"; there's always time to change. One just has to realize it and push through despite fear. Sapientia sapienti dono data.

@@DrDuckDrDuck-jh7ki It's about questioning authority. Society wants us to be obedient little citizens. When you question it you get shunned by being called a conspiracy theorist, bigot, or religious nut.

Understandable, what you're saying. Fortunately, I am unable to be influenced in any way by most things unless I agree to it.* (Other things like an earthquake or tornado or taxes can affect me despite what I will.) I believe most people need to be controlled or guided or pointed in a new direction; and that it is not a good or bad thing, just the way the cookie crumbles for most. Although, the ones doing the controlling could do a far better job than they are but everyone plays the cards they're dealt... and the extra cards slipped in. "With absolute power come the absolute certainty that they'll be a right c**t." If you read this far, check out that Latin phrase in my 1st post, or not. You might be ready to go down the rabbit hole. I doubt it, but I never know for sure, and pointing someone to the trials, adventures and rewards that particular rabbit hole brings is always worth it, and I don't mind. Regardless of it all, good luck to you and may peace find you whenever it can, or you can find peace yourself, I'm partial to cheesecake and hours of mentation without attachment or thought.
