Ground soldiers from the US and South Vietnam entered eastern Cambodia in April 1970 to strike Communist strongholds there. While this was going on, the Vietnamese Communists expanded their territory into Cambodia and started annexing significant portions of the countryside for the Khmer Rouge, who welcomed their assistance despite long-standing mistrust of Vietnam
