      The most difficult part of deep mourning is the inability to communicate that depth to others. I believe THAT is what most imprisons people in their loss. It's what is responsible for parents breaking up after the death of a child; one parent (usually the mother) is trapped in that anguish while the other divorces himself from that pain. By one parent abandoning the other parent in that pain, it breaks their bond. If they hope to save their union, they must work through the grief together. The one grieving cannot escape or resolve any of it alone, at least not easily. The one avoiding pain cannot resolve the pain without submitting to it. The parents need each other if they hope to heal.

    AI Artificial Intelligence is indeed a different movie. It was actually a Kubrick project that he never felt able to make as filmmaking technology hadn't reached a high enough level to meet his exacting needs so Stanley handed over all the preparation work that he and his team had done by 1995 and Spielberg released it in 2001 - it was his last project before this one.

    The reason why some things were so bright was because it was us seeing things from agatha's perspective. You gotta remember she is spending her whole life in simple room with minimal lighting and no way for the eyes to better protect itself from sunlight. As a result, sunlight is a lot brighter so she can't handle the brightness. Another reason why they made things bright is to hide certain things. Rather than spend extra to create certain cgi add ins they instead just made certain spots brighter thus you can't see everything. It also adds to the sterile monotone color scheme as its so bright that colors are not perceptible as all you can see is white. Its only as you move into darkness that color becomes more visable. That is why some scenes show more color as the story gets more and more dark. This movie is important in other ways as its been used as a prediction of future technology. Facial recognition was not around yet when this movie was made. Its right up there with demolition man for best predictions of the future.

    • @sntxrrr
      @sntxrrr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just some minor points; there is no facial recognition in the movie, they use an advanced form of retinal scan which was already a commercial technology back in the 1980s. And demolition Man did not do a good job at predicting the future. There has been no restaurant wars and if anyone laughs at you for not understanding the three seashells it is only because that person is a huge movie nerd.

    Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has worked on every Spielberg film since 1993's Schindler's List. On the one hand, their collaboration has resulted in some of the most creative shots in cinema history. But many fans definitely took notice of the less colorful look and heavy brightness of Spielberg's filmography since then. The easiest comparison is Indiana Jones 4 vs the previous three. I've always wondered how his films would've looked if Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049, Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall, Big Lebowski, 1917, etc...) was the Director of Photography instead.

    @facts2741 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The color grading was a creative choice that worked whether or not you happen to like it. The last scene zooming out from the precogs is the only scene with standard color grading. That was a choice. The idea of a society dominated by the corruption of a precrime department goes well with unfocused/desaturated color grading skewed to the cold side. When precrime goes away amd the precogs are free, we finally get to see a scene with realistic and warm lighting.

    _MR_ is not my favourite Spielberg film, but it might be his finest hour as a director. The level of visual invention and narrative control is unreal. One of the things I like most about the movie is how well it captures the spirit of old films noir without trying too hard to ape the style through costume, cinematography or music. The eccentric performances of the bit players (particularly Tim Blake Nelson, Lois Smith and Peter Stormare) are straight out of movies like _Touch of Evil_ or _Kiss of Death._

It also is stylized, deals with determinism vs free will (or arguably potential), and has some great actors with equally great performances. There's a Woody Allen movie called Sweet and Lowdown, where Sean Penn plays a 1930s jazz guitarist, and Samantha Morton plays his mute love interest. You should see how emotive she can be with her face with NO lines. I think that's what Spielberg saw her in that led him to cast her in this.

  • @sntxrrr
    @sntxrrr ปีที่แล้ว

    Fun fact: Spielberg used a thinktank of specialists (scientists, tech leaders etc.) to envision what the world would look like in 50 years time.
    At the time the movie was made using retina scans for identification in the future made sense. The Human Genome Project (a worldwide effort to generate the first complete sequence of human DNA) was still ongoing after more than 10 years. Consequently, sci-fi didn't yet deal with it as a minor background aspect in their stories but rather as the major theme, often in the form of cloning or the consequences of 'designer babies', the movie Gattaca (which you already watched) being a great example.

    Hey Shan, This vision of the future is so next level in this movie.------ From self-driving cars that use the sides of building to double as roadways.------ To interface teach that can scan your mind from their thoughts and on the flip side implant new ones to create fantasies. Flying police cars, roll up digital newspapers.------ Near-instant body part replacements, artificial body parts.------ And the list goes on and on.------ THe only one I would leave off the list is the constant eye scans.------ But our cell phones can do that trick to have us tracked, so were screwed either way.

      Word.
      Dick was actually commissioned to write his own screenplay to Ubik, which I've read. I think it would work excellent, maybe even better as a movie, because you could use cinema techniques to portray time moving backwards:
      It would start in 4k, then go back to 1080p, then to regular TV in 16:9, then to 4:3, then to B/W and finally to silent movie.

But the world building is amazing. The fact that it's been practically forgotten about is the reason I consider it so underrated. In fact, you might be the first reactor I follow to react to it, if you choose to watch it. (Just please keep your expectations in check. Precrime actually did work quite well, by preventing murders. It wasn't perfect though, as we found out. The human factors of it made it vulnerable, and sometimes alternate futures were possible.
    Perhaps every time?
    Just having an agent show up and have a 10 minute chat with the would-be murderer would likely solve a fair amount of cases. Sure, sometimes they'd still go back and kill their target, but the opportunity might have passed forever in some cases.

    One of those movies that flies under the radar a bit, but there's so much going on, there's time for genuinely traumatic scenes with Samantha Morton, but also humour (the almost throwaway moment when Tom crashes the yoga class), a big chunk of world-building, action, slick visual style, plot twists and sick-sticks.

    I'm the same way with book adaptations, Shan. There are some movies that I haven't seen because I've wanted for decades to read the books first, and still haven't gotten around to it. 😆

      This film diverges significantly from the Philip K. Dick story, which is not always a bad thing for either the film or the book. PKD was a creative genius for creating original stories, but they are usually just the broad outlines in short form. The screenwriters had to add a lot to make it feature length.

    I don't understand why they had to charge people with "future murder" - that they can't prove, instead of "attempted murder" - which they have plenty of evidence of. It's still prison time.

    Now the thing that will really bake your noodle..... The Caretaker said "They say all your dreams come true" in the Pre-crime Jail.
    John gets haloed, then his wife breaks him out, he exposes Lamarr, ends up freeing the Pre-Cogs, his wife takes him back, and they have another child on the way.
    Did that actually happen, or did we experience John's Halo Dream after he was arrested?

    Max Von Sydow's character is named Lemar Burgess. I can't help but wonder if that may be an homage to the author of "A Clockwork Orange," Anthony Burgess. Then again, i's a common enough name, I suppose. It might as easily be an homage to the harsh disciplinarian principal of my elementary school, Mrs. Burgess at L.O. Jacobs Elementary in Coon Rapids, Minnesota (Closed 2011).

    All movie adaptations of Dick's work are vastly different from the original. Very few exceptions to the rule, like A Scanner Darkly (which is still missing some characters in the movie version).
    If you like Dick adaptations, I recommend "The Adjustment Bureau".
    Also, for the record, most of his adaptations - such as Minority Report - aren't actually based on novels but on short stories. You could have probably read the story in an hour^^

    • @HermanVonPetri
      @HermanVonPetri ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PK Dick really does his best when hitting the broad story lines in short form. His short stories are quite enjoyable. Some of his longer novels tend to drag a bit for me. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" which of course became "Blade Runner" hits the sweet spot in the middle. And of course the film adaptation is highly divergent from the original.

      @@HermanVonPetri i always love that bit in the middle of "Do Androids," that depicts the large cult or following of the force of entropy, in the world.

    To answer your question if there are any movies that Cruise doesn't run in. I can only think of a few. The color of money, Eyes wide shut, Tropic Thunder (of course it's a relatively small role) and I believe Top Gun.

    I totally agree with you about the annoying over exposed lighting.
    By the way, this movie leans on/borrows some tropes from classic private detective genre (just like Blade Runner did) - particularly Raymond Chandler novels (and the encounters with extreme types of characters in scenes).
    If you want to see where some of the inspiration for this movie comes from please watch:
    The Big Sleep (1946)
    Murder My Sweet (1944)
