The tech honestly seems perfect. You can still connect your phone, you have an adjustable digital display in the dash, buttons are physical. I wanted an E92 for a long time. Then I started learning about that car and BMW’s in general. Ended up with a 981 Boxster S. It’s far superior in most ways. Porsche builds fantastic engines that are very durable and they are far easier to work on. I went for a blast up the mountain this morning and got 20 mpg for the entire trip. The M3? Would’ve gotten 8mpg. No throttle actuators to replace and no rod bearing issues. It’s much lighter and being mid engined it has better balance, turn in and is just as fast with its lower weight.

The factory valve actually closes until it gets to about 5K rpm. You can just take the vacuum hose off from the valve and plug the hose or get an aftermarket valve controller.
Love the 718 Cayman. I remember when the Boxter came out, I loved it, good size for me. It eventually evolved to a 4 cylinder which turned me off but I still loved the look. And now back to a 6 cylinder for the GTS 4.0. Funny how this video popped up. I was just commenting how the 2024 Porsche 911S/T and this car were my favorite looking Porsches even though the 911 S/T is not attainable by most. That is a good launch, not bad at all for N/A 6 cylinder and you can do that all day long.

Godspeed. First time viewer, really like your candor and presentation. Nice channel. With a PDK, that Cayman will work as a summer daily. I owned a GT4 with a 6-speed and the gearing is just awful for the street - the GTS 4.0 has the same problem, to the point that the top of 2nd gear with a manual is still over 80 mph even in the GTS. It's just not very usable. I sold my GT4 and got a really nice 997.2 that I am personally much happier with. I also owned my E92 M3 for 7 years and it was an amazing car but eventually you realize an M3 is still just a really nice daily (I replaced my E92 with a G80 M3 6mt as a daily and it is fantastic). If you want a backroads car, more of a pure sporting experience, the mid-engine or rear engine platform is the way to go. Surely you are on the right track with this Cayman. As a PDK, with the extra 7th forward gear, that Cayman GTS is a really nice summer daily and balanced backroads car. For me it just comes down to if you want manual or not. If manual is a requirement for you, then you will find yourself either short shifting a lot on public roads just to shift, or you will have to do very high speeds to get any fun out of the manual. But if PDK works for you, then bang for buck it is really, reaaaally hard to argue with a Cayman.
Daily drove an E90 M3 manual for 2 years. The manual wasn’t great and the engine was too high strung. My E39 M5 was a far better daily. Also had a 718 Cayman S for two years. My bad for getting the 2.5L but the rest of the car was fantastic. Very happy for you as I think you picked a great spec.

They're rare, but if you could find one with those options for $60-90k and it has good mileage, I would pounce.
I owned a 2006 Cayman S. Ordered it when they first came out and it was a fantastic car. For 4 years and 42,000 miles it was my daily driver here in FL. It took many trips from east to west coast and back, and it was FLAWLESS in every way. Service was one set of FRONT tires, 2 oil changes, and a set of rear brakes. That’s it. It’s an excellent choice. I miss mine but fear not, I’m rocking a 20022 Veloster N DCT. LOL! 😂
The Caymen is the next logical step. Especially a 4.0 GT4 or GTS. E92 M3 or maybe an e90 M3 and a 718 GT4 to cover the coupe designation is a nice toy chest indeed! Definitely attainable if you can wrench! A little tougher if you don't. Great vid!!!! Very few cars rival the s65 sound.
Great Video! I just sold my 2008 E90 M3 Sedan for a Cayman GTS 4.0. I took delivery a few weeks ago and put 1000 miles on it. Still working on the break-in period which if you follow the manual is brutal (4000 RPMs max). The sound above 4000 RPMs is excellent. Even first gear around 4500. I haven’t gone above 5000 yet… 😢. I was looking for a new M3 until I drove the manual which blows any other manual I’ve driven completely away
Getting a 718 without PDLS+ is pretty wild to me. They are a gigantic upgrade. I get impressed by them every time I drive mine. I got wireless carplay to work perfectly fine with a dongle I bought from AliExpress.
btw if u get a 718 GTS 4.0 take it to Deman's motorsport (they r pretty close to ya) that takes it to 4.5L and 500hp and basically creates the best Porsche experience u can get (lookout for them used too bc they r popular), or even do the regear for the manual which makes the first few gears not as long (ie can use the first few gears without needing to go 120)
The 4.5L is prohibitively expensive. It’s basically half again the price of the car. For $150k just buy a 991.2 or 992 Carrera S or GTS and tune it to over 500 hp.
Just wait until you try the first gen Cayman and realize they get substantially better the farther back Cayman you go. First gen is no electric assist steering, no turbo, so raw, so good. New gens and GT4 is great and all but they lack emotion and start to feel more muted and mushy like the BMWs.
Porsche makes fun drivers cars! I have a base 718 Cayman manual for the last five years. It’s a great road trip car, I don’t get tired of it nor tempted to sell. I get about 32mpg on long trips. 2nd gear is way too long, but I love the manual experience. The PDK is very good, better than most humans. You can’t really go wrong with any of the Caymans.
Miles you’re taking a familiar path which a lot of BMW guys have traveled, especially guys who have owned M cars. Back in 2010 I had an E92 M3 competition then I graduated to a F82 then a G82C and finally to a 718 GT4. if I can make a recommendation and the funds are available to you definitely pick up a naturally aspirated Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 or GT4.
The Cayman is a great car. The 4.0's are expensive but if I were to get a 718 it would have to be the 6cyl. I'm looking at 997.2 911's right now but am definitely considering the Cayman as well. You can get an older Carrera S for the same price. Swap in a nice new headunit and have apple carplay easily.. the aftermarket on these cars is huge so you can do a ton of modernizing if you want. Other than that, who really needs the "tech"? If we want techy cars theres a million of them on the market to choose from. Good luck!
When I see 250k porsches going speed limit on the road, I totally understand, since if anything goes wrong is like burning down a house. Personally, although the GTS 4.0 is amazing, its so expensive, I would take the regular Cayman S.
250k$ Porsches are covered by warranty....it's years later when you get squeaky bum time over strange noises ..ask 996, 997, 981 owners about IMS worries...
@@pedromonteiro2644 yes, but.... the issues with Porsche's cheap engines is design, not maintenance. Obviously, if you don't maintain any non Japanese engine you are in great risk of problems, but the IMS, RMS, Bore scoring stuff is not simply avoided by regular maintenance
With regards to infotainment tech in cars these days, less should be more: simply include wireless and wired Apple Car Play and Android Audio integration. That's it. that is all you really need. The PDK is so good it's not a bad thing to have an automatic transmission in a Porsche, but it sure would be nice if they included a manual option for all of their models. The driving experience is heightened in a manual IMO.
Fully agree.. The 718 still uses the 991 911 interior which was peak Porsche interior imho.. The perfect mix between analog dials and buttons and digital gadgets with the built in PCM with Apple Carplay.. The more "modern" digital interior in the 992 911 is a step back in ergonomics and sportscar feel..
YT's algorithm brought me here. Congrats on the purchase! As a long-time Porsche owner, I approve! Your 1st gear change sounded a bit premature. Was it short shifting? I've seen some of these do that if traction wasn't ideal and it's more or less predicting wheel slip.
Since you love the E92, you'd love a 987.2 R or a 981 GTS. The 987 has incredible steering feel, and the 981 GTS sounds so good. The GTS 4.0 is great, but I have a feeling you may want to own some of the more raw energy of the older cars while you still can. The GTS 4.0 is going to be around to buy in the future.
I had E92 M3 for 5 years. Put 82K miles on it and loved it. Then went to 2015 Carrera S and so happy with it been with me for 7 years now. So I know both cars very well. I miss the sound of the M3 on cold starts or at redline. I also think the “feel” of the steering on the M3 was beefier and connected. Other than that the Porsche gained my trust quick and that makes it more inviting to push my limits and learn. I could never trust the E92 in a traffic light to launch, each launch was different than the other, you just slam the throttle, pray and hope for the best 🤭not the carrera. Also tight cornering, throttle steering and agility goes for Porsche. Also when you drive a supposedly 400hp carrera s after a 414 hp M3 you know that numbers don’t tell the full story. For someone who spent 5 years in a 414hp M3 the Carreras feels and behaves more like a 450 easy. So don’t get fooled with the numbers. If you haven’t drove a Porsche, please do
I owned a 981, a 718, and now a 981 GT4. I think at this price point you should look into the 981 GT4 or even save a bit more from getting the 4.0 and get a 981 GTS. Not to be bias but I agree the 981 looks better and it has a more analog and more hardcore feel to the 718. Aside from the infotainment, the interior is pretty much the same also.
These are just excellent. I had the pleasure to drive this around the Porsche Experience Center track in Leipzig (and compare it it to the 911 Carrera S) and it would be my "perfect" modern Porsche as a daily.
I love it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. I just got a 2024 BMW M240I AWD, leased it, and have already started looking for the next one.
I don't know what it was about the way this video was filmed or edited but it gave me motion sickness just watching it. It constantly felt like the peripheral parts of the video kept wobbling. Don't see any other comments about this so maybe it's just me. Amazing content as always though, Miles! Keep it up.
Congrats, dope car this is what I’m saving up for myself :D The wobble affect of the lens is tripping me out, is it a warp stabilizer you’re using in post?
About 3.5 times the cost of your e92 m3, is the GTS 4.0 really that much better than your m3? 100k at your age would also grow to over half a million dollars in 20 years and change.
Cars are a hobby for some people. It will always be better financially to never buy any car ever. There’s a point of diminishing returns. Just work to earn more money and buy whatever you want along the way. It’s not going to break you.
Yes well the CGTS should also hold their value pretty well especially with the 718 platform going electric. Should be able to get most of it back when selling.
What camera do you used? I love the video just found your channel, but that sensor shifting drove me nuts haha. Besides that, great video! Defenilty hunting for a Porsche next!
Save some money and get a 981 GTS. Same tech, better sounding engine, and IMO a better looking car overall. PLUS, resale values have basically bottomed out and on the way up because the 981s are how you get the flat-6 without spending 100k on a cayman/boxster. I personally own a 981 and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Bought a 2019 718 in 2020 and sold it in 2024 for the same amount that I paid for it. Got a very good deal + pre-COVID used car prices, but definitely RETAINS IT's VALUE! Loved it. Only sold to move to 911 next.
The funny thing is that the cayman stays very close to the original M3's values. Driver engagement, naturally aspirated, sound, etc. It's what an M3 should really be. A lot of people say that cars like the 911 GT3 are in their own class, but in my opinion, it's the only one left in its dying class.
The 987 generation is better imo.. my dad owned a newer Boxster S and it felt so heavy compared to my 987 Boxster with a manual. Throw an aftermarket exhaust on one and you won't have the same speed numbers as the GTS, but damn that thing will sound good and it's a manual!
I mostly drive brand new cars ranging from 3800-6000 pounds. When stepping in anything under 3500 I feel like I'm driving a motorcycle lol. The weight is perfectly fine with me.
@@CarswithMiles Far, I guess I just like the smaller Porsches better since they feel more pocket-like (if that's a way to describe them). You can toss them around corners more confidently with less electronic assistance than the newer stuff.
I drove a Cayman S PDK and I’m just not impressed with the PDK as it’s just not engaging. The pedal shifters fell cheap and are small( as they did in my other Porsches). My Maserati fells better, sounds better. I think the best Porsche is a manual Porsche. Prices for the 718s will continue to be high because we as a car community just want the brand, and 911s are way overpriced Miles, that E92 is special. This specific PDK Porsche ain’t the one to leave the e92 for as you will want to trade it in a year when the newness wears off.

take it to Deman's motorsport (they r pretty close to ya) that takes it to 4.5L and 500hp and basically creates the best Porsche experience u can get (lookout for them used too bc they r popular), or even do the regear for the manual which makes the first few gears not as long (ie can use the first few gears without needing to go 120)
I had my GTS 4.0 re-geared by DeMan. Transformative modification. Not cheap, but worth every penny.
The 4.5L is prohibitively expensive. It’s basically half again the price of the car. For $150k just buy a 991.2 or 992 Carrera S or GTS and tune it to over 500 hp.
this cayman is a masterpiece! love this model
Cayman GTS would be a good replacement for my Supra. The only thing I think I’d miss is the attention.
The trick to get more revs while stationary in a Porsche GT car is to pull the both the paddles and put the gearbox into drive mode.
Ahhhh
Just wait until you try the first gen Cayman and realize they get substantially better the farther back Cayman you go. First gen is no electric assist steering, no turbo, so raw, so good. New gens and GT4 is great and all but they lack emotion and start to feel more muted and mushy like the BMWs.
Drive the base model with sport exhaust on and in sport plus mode. A lot of car for the money. GTS 4.0 engine is pretty special though!
I have had a gts4.0 for years now. Get the soul performance opf delete. That is all you need.
Former BMW owner here (M3). The next step is always Porsche… and once you go Porsche you won’t go back to BMW.
Just my opinion.
The 4.0-liter motor is just so hard to go back from unfortunately
250k$ Porsches are covered by warranty....it's years later when you get squeaky bum time over strange noises ..ask 996, 997, 981 owners about IMS worries...
@@Al_is_XXX yeah highly depreciated ones are generally worse since people tend to cheap out on maintenece
The 4 cylinder is a deal breaker for many.
Thats a nice car! The real M3 flex is the baby seat in the back. I drive an F80.
Agreed on the 981 vs 718 looks. The 981 is one of the best looking Porsches ever!
I’m Nj born and raised fellow e92 m3 owner. And for that alone, subbing this channel
If you want pops and bangs you have to put it on sport not sport plus. and rev it till 5k exactly and sounds great.
You should get it. Total cost of ownership will be minimal if you decide to sell it.
Cayman is more 911 than 911 itself.
Bloody beautiful , go with the Cayman!
You are a natural man, great content and presentation!
This is a weekend get away car. The tech is sufficient. You will enjoy driving it everyday. Probably one of the best driving cars ever made.
As a Porsche fanatic, I wouldn’t sell the E92😊 Adding a P car, however… highly recommended 😊
Come on in, the water is fine. I moved from an E46 ZHP to a 981 Cayman and wow what a difference. I love the handling and performance of the Cayman.
YT's algorithm brought me here.
Congrats on the purchase! As a long-time Porsche owner, I approve!
Your 1st gear change sounded a bit premature. Was it short shifting? I've seen some of these do that if traction wasn't ideal and it's more or less predicting wheel slip.
Hey man great vid, those Cayman are lots of fun and d beautiful cars ! Thanks
I like his style of video. Car is super nice. Doesn't need all the tech that the Bimmer's have. Of course, you have to pay the Porsche premium.
This is my favorite car channel.
No you
best exhaust options are JCR or Kline
These are just excellent. I had the pleasure to drive this around the Porsche Experience Center track in Leipzig (and compare it it to the 911 Carrera S) and it would be my "perfect" modern Porsche as a daily.
I love it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. I just got a 2024 BMW M240I AWD, leased it, and have already started looking for the next one.
I have the '24 M240i RWD and love it. Anything faster than this is basically a felony vehicle for me lol
Videos keep getting better & better dude. Your narration skills stay levelling up fr.
I don't know what it was about the way this video was filmed or edited but it gave me motion sickness just watching it. It constantly felt like the peripheral parts of the video kept wobbling. Don't see any other comments about this so maybe it's just me. Amazing content as always though, Miles! Keep it up.
You can bypass the soft limiter by clicking in both paddle shifters at the same time to put it in neutral.
You need to come to the RennSport Dragon Rally down at the Tail of the Dragon. It was last weekend, and it was EPIC.
the gts 4.0 is perfect, i want it so bad
4:31 oh so cute!
That clutch dump on launch... Oh my my
It's so good
Heck yea! Can never go wrong with Porsche.
Congrats, dope car this is what I’m saving up for myself :D
The wobble affect of the lens is tripping me out, is it a warp stabilizer you’re using in post?
I went from E38 to 987.2 S. Can't believe how reliable the Cayman is!
You need a convertible, get a 981 Spyder
I'm not that big of a Boxster guy vs Cayman
Every video is a real treat! Thank you for your creativity and professionalism.☀️🌪🌜
About 3.5 times the cost of your e92 m3, is the GTS 4.0 really that much better than your m3? 100k at your age would also grow to over half a million dollars in 20 years and change.
I certainly wouldn't spend MSRP money on a GTS if I were to make the move. Not looking to drop more than $85K on one.
Cars are a hobby for some people. It will always be better financially to never buy any car ever. There’s a point of diminishing returns. Just work to earn more money and buy whatever you want along the way. It’s not going to break you.
And yes, the Porsche is absolutely 3.5x+ better than the M3, and is worth every penny.
Yes well the CGTS should also hold their value pretty well especially with the 718 platform going electric. Should be able to get most of it back when selling.
One does not just replace a M3! But one can get Cayman to hang out with the M3! 😛
I love the Cayman, but for that price I am getting a Z51 C8 Corvette and pocketing the change.
Any Cayman will provide many smiles per gallon. Yes, I do own one! 🤠
Nice video
“Is that pause?” 😂
That GT4rs is gorgeous 😍
It is
This is my daily ride (w/ a MT) in Los Angeles! Absolutely no regrets!
What camera do you used? I love the video just found your channel, but that sensor shifting drove me nuts haha. Besides that, great video! Defenilty hunting for a Porsche next!
Dawg you should try out an AMG GTS, the old good ones.
GTS with GT4 front bumper is peak value and aesthetic!
Also if you get a 2.5T motor, you lose the exhaust note but gain quite a bit of power with a flash tune. 420hp and 410 ft/lbs
Go for the 981 GTS for better looks, all the sound you will ever need and safe some money doing it.
🤔
Hello mate. I love the Cayman but how do you think it would daily in the wet?
Save some money and get a 981 GTS. Same tech, better sounding engine, and IMO a better looking car overall. PLUS, resale values have basically bottomed out and on the way up because the 981s are how you get the flat-6 without spending 100k on a cayman/boxster.
I personally own a 981 and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Is that all condensation in the rear tail lights?
The reason the gearing is like it is is because it’s an all rounder not an out and out sports car. Like the GT4 RS
Hmm idk I think the GTS is geared to be an overall sports car
love u man keep up that good work
Porsche! Always the Answer...
12:21 its like u are getting rear ended oh my lord
Bought a 2019 718 in 2020 and sold it in 2024 for the same amount that I paid for it. Got a very good deal + pre-COVID used car prices, but definitely RETAINS IT's VALUE! Loved it. Only sold to move to 911 next.
The funny thing is that the cayman stays very close to the original M3's values. Driver engagement, naturally aspirated, sound, etc. It's what an M3 should really be. A lot of people say that cars like the 911 GT3 are in their own class, but in my opinion, it's the only one left in its dying class.
i envy ppl who are not obsessed with cars with V8 and above. They have so many options.
is the c8 better or worse than this i just think you get so much with the c8 compared to this
The 987 generation is better imo.. my dad owned a newer Boxster S and it felt so heavy compared to my 987 Boxster with a manual.
Imagine coming from an E92 and saying the 718 tech is outdated. 😂
Good video and I appreciate your perspective on the car.
I never said my car wasn't outdated lol.
They can both be outdated…
Great video Miles 👊🏾👏
I drove a Cayman S PDK and I’m just not impressed with the PDK as it’s just not engaging. The pedal shifters fell cheap and are small( as they did in my other Porsches). My Maserati fells better, sounds better. I think the best Porsche is a manual Porsche.
Prices for the 718s will continue to be high because we as a car community just want the brand, and 911s are way overpriced
Miles, that E92 is special. This specific PDK Porsche ain’t the one to leave the e92 for as you will want to trade it in a year when the newness wears off.
Nice choice!
How come you got the automatic transmission over the manual?
