I'm not sure I'd call it a digression. The better quality enables producers to manipulate the eq more intuitively, and effect it without having to compromise clarity. I don't mind people using Vocaloid for techno or electronica. It just means that they'll be producing better and better work.

I actually disagree with this. There are many VOCAtechno songs where the vocals sound clearer then in most pop, rock, folk, etc. songs that I've heard. But, it really all depends on the person using the program and their editing skills. It's not the voice itself, but the person tuning it. Check out 'Gentel Despair' and 'Discrete Pulse' both featuring Hatsune Miku. They're perfect examples of how VOCALOID'S can be properly used in techno songs.
