    My mix bus compression is pretty straight forward. I have the audio coming in at about -8db rms. I use an ssl bus comp. I have a 30ms attack, autorelease, a ratio of 4, and the threshold set for max compression of about 5db. The sidechain/filter/whatever you want to call it is set so the kick and snare trigger the compressor approximately the same way.
    I almost always will use it. When I do use it, it will be the first effect I “turn on” and I mix everything through it

    Maybe sometime you could do a video on how exactly you integrate your hardware into the mixing process (i.e. connect, set up and routing) ? I just bought my first 500 rack with 2 capi vp25, a bus comp, an opto comp and a deesser but just can't get a handle on the latency. I would be very interested to see how a pro gets around the issue 😊

    Try mixing through a whole chain - many pro engineers use a bus comp, EQ and limiter. This is because it is what the master goes through so you can try to work knowing what’s going to happen.

    I’ve been a top down mixer for many years. But what’s not alluded to in this video is the automation that is involved to make a mix a musical performance. It’s sorta cool to see another SSL style 2bus comp, but I feel like this was more of an explanation of how your particular comp works rather than why. Really no skin off of my nose. Fun video!

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If ANY mastering engineer requests no compression on the mix bus, fire them immediately and get someone else. A mastering engineer should not take mixes that have been limited, and that should be the only restriction. I master nearly all the music I mix, and I master for a ton of other producer/mixers.

  • @lore88824
    @lore88824 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I respectfully disagree: putting the compressor on from the beginning doesn't work for me. This way I'm hitting a compression that I don't see when setting up other compressions on single tracks. I've been mixing twenty years with nothing on my mix buss and when I'm close to the end of the mix I put my 2buss compressor on (usually an SSL type) and it gives me that "glue" effect together with probably some EQ and saturation added, I just have to adjust and refine some levels , but that's really minimal. I'm seeing this other approach recently, the "top down one", but I really don't understand why. Plus, working with no "sauce" on my 2 Bus from the beginning forces me to get the sound I want from the single tracks, without relying on anything strapped across the 2 buss. I just add it at the end for extra polish and finalizing effect.
    I ackowledge that everybody has his/her own way of going at this. Tried it, top down doesn't work for me, and yes, I too use mix buss compression 100% of the time.

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To each their own! I’ve been mixing this way for at least 15 years. But if it doesn’t work for you then there’s nothing wrong with doing it a different way. If it sounds good it is good!

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No such thing as a stupid question! It’s the classic electronic kick drum sound. But a widely used term when referring to any sort of electronic kick drums.

    • @PatchDog
      @PatchDog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ColtCapperrune Yes indeed, the term is thrown about these days by the kids for just about any bass hit Kick drum sound, but an 808 kick is simply just the kick drum from Roland's classic TR-808 drum machine (analog) from the early 80s.

  • @JuanPabloVeTV
    @JuanPabloVeTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, cool video, but i almost disagree with all your're saying. Its stange. I think the best way to understand compression is to really experiment and study it. You don't always need the fastest release, añso i've studied compression a lot layelly and I found that the best thing that works for me is yo mix with out compression until the Last bit of mixing, other wise I will not have total control or knowlegde of what im doing. Compression is not set it and forget it.
    So, it was a cool video, but i feel like I don't understand why youre doing all youre doing. Interesting nevertheless.

      That’s an odd request… I make videos about the things I think are important. The things I wish someone would have told me, or showed me when I was starting out. I think hardware is important, so I show it in my videos and I talk about it. That said, the entire point of this video was to show the concept behind bus compression, and the settings I’m using. You can use these ideas and settings on any compressor, hardware or software. Thanks for watching.

      I have to disagree. Plugin has it own quirk but hardware does something special. It is quite hard to demo a hardware while all plugin has a trial period. So it's nice to hear how hardware sound and how one approach mixing with it.
