    Tis the season to do the big climb up to the top of mt everest on your bicycle but not the actual mt everest, that would be impossible, you probably couldn't carry the oxygen tank on your back to make it up the top maybe Victor Campanaerts could do it though because he has been doing intervals at 10,000m altitude anyway, El Pistolero Alberto Contador, not satisfied with 7 grand tour victories, broke the everesting world record in Spain last week with a time of 7 hours and 27 minutes. Emma Pooley also joined in the fun, setting a new record of 8 hours and 53 minutes in Switzerland on a long and very steep climb. Congrats to the both of them.

    The problem that I foresee here is that with the increased interest from pro-riders and perhaps an increasing commercial factor, that Hell’s 500 will not have the resources or the ability to arbitrate and differentiate between very close attempts. They just examine Strava after all. This does not assess the quality of the recording device on the bike. It does not assess if there is any external assistance being bought to bear, such as a sneaky little motor, and importantly Strava elevations recorded on different head units can vary wildly, whose to say that the reference elevation that Strava has in its base topographic maps for all of the steep hills in the world is actually accurate? Have they been geospatially verified?
    The Everesting thing started out as a celebration of amateur attempts at an enormous cycling challenge, open to anyone brave enough to try. I hope that this professionalisation doesn’t not destroy that inclusive and generous attitude.

  • @LarsRR
    @LarsRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Would love to see Ineos science the sh!t out of Everesting. Analyzing the perfect climb, drafting with riders switching in and out (like on 1:59), perfect nutrition, weather, road conditions etc.
    I bet they could get a rider like Bernal to sub 7 hours.

    • @lasrachtech.1341
      @lasrachtech.1341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @19brian55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why??

    • @LarsRR
      @LarsRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lasrach Tech. Last few TdFs weren’t so great, I agree. Nevertheless, since Everesting/Trenching is the hot new thing now, and the world‘s best have started to give it a shot, it would be very interesting to see what is possible. INEOS 1:59 was great Entertainment imo. It wasn’t Kipchoge against anyone else, it was humanity vs the limits of what i possible. The suspense is not whether Bernal can beat Contador. I mean, of course he can. It is rather how far can he go?
      Seeing everything come together and seeing where improvements can be made, was pretty intriguing with INEOS 1:59. Additionally, cycling is a sport where a scientific approach can yield even greater improvements than in running.

    • @lasrachtech.1341
      @lasrachtech.1341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lars agreed, that approach can make for an interesting process! Just not sure things like everesting need ‘professionalisation’

    • @LarsRR
      @LarsRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lasrach Tech. Of course it doesn’t „need“ professionalisation. 5 months ago, I would have laughed at the prospect of a World Tour team trying to break a Strava record. However, now with more and more pros doing it, I think we have some professionalism already.
      Ineos would have never tried to take the record from someone like Gaimon. I mean, it is obvious that a current WT pro will be able to beat a former one at climbing. I don‘t expect Ineos to do it now, but maybe a few years down the line, when the record has become a lot more difficult to break and the margins of improvement become minimal.

    During this pandemic it has been trendy to go for an "Everesting" record. It's awesome what these 2 have done recently but they would get demolished by a number of current pros and even some amateurs. I am from the Valverde and Nibali camp, 3.5 hour trainings with some HIT intervals, or how el bala puts it, a tope siempre. El bala in many interviews has said that 5, 6, 7 hours in masoquism and if he did, he would lose the love for the bike. I am sad a Spaniard is attempting that crap, I like records of power, of aggressiveness, same reason a like a half a marathon, but think an ultra marathon is for very very intense people, and I dont respect that. I actually lost some respect for Contador, because he put his body through that no sense. An hour record might be harder and proves more, that kind of distance and that kind of time on the saddle in my opinion is not worth the attention.

    Agree with you picks on pro riders, Bernal and Spratt. But I wonder if the risks with pushing the descent will become an issue for any Pro. Though I’m sure teams would like the coverage, there is also the downside. Same as any “Pro” invitational event that doesn’t actually impact standings. I will admit, watching the efforts, like the one posted by Phil Gaimon, was awesome, but made my whole body ache. Perhaps best left to amateurs and retirees until the risk/reward limit eventually kicks in.

    A retired Contador now holds the record, so I'd have to think there are still at least 10 current in-shape pros that could take it. You have your pick of anyone considered a GT contender in 2020. I don't really follow amateur cyclists so I have no thoughts there. I like Phil G and I am interested to see his next attempt, but unless he was "putting it on for the camera" in his first successful attempt, I don't see him taking 30+ minutes off to get it again. Be cool if he does though.

    The reason it probably comes up as saying he used a iphone is because if his head unit died and then he recorded the rest on his phone, even if the vast majority was recorded on his head unit, strava says it was recorded on a phone.

    The guys that are used to the team being on call all the time might not be as good as a Quintana depending on which Quintana shows up. Following Bardet on strava he does incredible practice rides. Won the Mountain jersey in the tour last year. Of course it seems like he’s never ready to compete at the end but that could be his team. We have the Mt Evans hill climb each here in the US, highest paved road in North America to over 14000 ft and very thin air. Not sure who won this year. Might also be fun to watch Dan Martin if he really wanted it. Then, of course, there is the venerable Lanterne Rouge, who likely is rigorously training for his attempt.
