I'm 27 and all the post-punk revival/garage rock (whatever you want to call it) became big when I was just getting into music in early 2000s (I was in elementary school). And these bands made me take up playing guitar and I followed them throughout junior high, high school and even to today. Upbeat stripped down rock n roll is the best rock n' roll. Long live the Hives, the Strokes, White Stripes, the Cribs, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol etc etc. I am proud to have grown up with these bands and still be into them. Hard to even pinpoint the genre or "scene" if you didn't witness it, but I see it as a definite group of bands as distinct as punk or new wave or other historical musical movements and I am proud to have grown up with it.
These bands you mention were major just when I started hitting the (good) clubs around age 18-24. Fantastic time in music, perhaps distorted a bit by my great time as a student. Most bands you mention are considered 'garage rock revival' but I agree that bands like Franz Ferdinand and Interpol are also part of the same movement, so I just like to call it the rock revival of the 00's. Rock was less mainstream in the late 90's when it was all boy bands, R&B and Hip Hop, then these bands came along and by around 2006-2008 had died out again. There are still loads and loads of fantastic bands that make music just as great as these bands, they're just not mainstream anymore. Which in it's own isn't a bad thing, but good music being mainstream does help good music get the attention and success it deserves. I'm still hoping rock music picks up again in whatever form.
