      I'm definitely picking one up, at the price, you'd be stupid not to grab one. My only issue with L mount is that most of the lenses are very expensive, I've come from the MFT system and it's a bit of a shock with some of the lens prices. My wife, who does photography is a Sony A platform user and her lenses seem to be more reasonable in costs.

      I'm primarily a Pentax shooter. I noticed an Panasonic S5 bundled with this lens and an 85mm f1.8. I really bought it on whim because it was such a good looking deal. The kit lens is really what sold me on the purchase. A perfect range for for a walkabout lens with WR. Panasonics S5 is an amazing Full-Frame camera. I have bought a K&F adapter to mount my Pentax lenses on the L Mount. This is a great system especially for Video which I hope to do in the future. It's a complimentary tool to rum alongside my Pentax gear. A great review 👏 and no regrets in buying into this system 👍 😀

    Gordon, could you do landscaper photographers a favor? Every reviewer, almost across the board, never gets into the sharpness of landscape apertures. It is always wide open sharpness and how much light you can suck in. This is the exact opposite needs of a landscape photographer. I have found that some inexpensive lenses can be almost as sharp, up to being as sharp or sharper than Pro lenses when stopped down to f8-f16. I see legions of Landscape Photographers carrying backpacks stuffed full of fast glass thinking they need the most expensive lenses to get professional quality results. I used to be like this as well. Even if you just do a quick mention of it during your reviews, I think it could ease a great deal of trepidation for many photographers. I now enjoy carrying a very light pack that weighs a fraction of what I used to carry. People who see my photos all say, "Man you must have a real good camera and lenses to get shots like this!" I just grin, agree that I do and enjoy my little secret.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You're absolutely right, and I do try and test most lenses at a variety of apertures. This was a quicker review, so I didn't include them in the video. Please do also check out my lens reviews at cameralabs.com as I often include a bunch of landscape tests at a variety of apertures.

  • @michaelfitzhenry

    Very intriguing option, thanks for the review. I love the focal range. I don't really need wider than 20. I know there are uses for it - interiors, architecture. But I'm fine with not having an UWA for those scenarios - just take a different photo! I know people like to go wider than 20 for landscape, but I don't need it, plus I kinda don't really like the main way lenses like that tend to be used these days in landscape photography - emphasizing a foreground shrub or something or puddle. Not for me. On the other hand, zooms that are 24mm at the widest are a continual frustration because 24mm isn't wide enough so you're forced into at least 2 lenses. I'd rather cover 20ish to long normal or short tele. I would use that a lot, basically 90%. Then you get a couple of fast and/or character primes. Add something like a 100-400, and you could be all set. With Sony you could go Tamron 28-75/2.8 plus Sony 20mm/1.8. That's actually pretty great too, and versatile. But I think I like this option better.

    Pair this lens with a 70-200 f4 for a lightweight travel kit, especially for landscape! I wish canon would figure this lens range out. In the film days I had a 20-35, 35-105, 70-210 and a 24 prime. Never needed to bring out more than two at a time. (24 + 35-105 or 20-35 + 70-210 ). Anything wider than 20mm can be handled better with a prime as far as I’m concerned as UWA zooms get real fuzzy outside of the center or cost a fortune very quickly.

    The lens seems to be a clever compromise, but I do see some irony in Panasonic making this lens for the heaviest-of-'em-all mirrorless full frame camera on the market today. I would like to have this for my Sony A7, though. I am not a huge fan of switching lenses all the time, and with the 17-28 mm that I prefer on my camera I do know I miss quite a lot of shots on the longer end. On the other hand, I hate walking around with my 28-75 mm because it is never even close to be wide enough. Would I buy this if it were made for my camera? Yes, I think so.

    Here’s what I have learned after a year of shooting this lens on my s1. Shoot fine jpeg with it, not raw. The jpg’s look much better. Panasonic knows what corrections to apply for this specific lens and does it better than you would fiddling with raw. Make sure you have the firmware updated. Also by all means experiment with the picture settings. But unless lighting conditions are tricky, fine jpeg will get the best out of this lens with almost no effort.

      Any thought on how this lens will hold up in the Super 35 crop mode on the S1H? I find switching between FF and S35 with the S Pro 24-70 gives me a lot of range to work with, yet little compromise in quality. The same tactic could make this 20-60 useful as a 40mm lens at f3.5.

    Gordon,
    Very interesting to hear your comments on the weight of the S1H. I was very tempted to purchase the S1 with the 24-105, but when I looked at the weight compared to my Sony A7-3 with the 24-105, I decided not to take the plunge. However, I am also a great fan of the G9 with 10-25, which I regularly use and love the results. In all honesty, I tend to pick up the G9 before my Sony due to its excellent performance to weight ratio. I will however, be very tempted to purchase a smaller, lighter S series, if, as you mentioned in this clip is strong possibility. I think then that if Panasonic manages to sort out the size and weight problem, they will have an excellent system.

    Hi Gordon, thanks for the review. I have a GH5 and there is a similar lens, the 10-25mm for this camera (but much more expensive).
    Which lens do you prefer to use, the Leica 10-25mm on the GH5/G9 or the 20-60mm on the S1 (especially about rendering and stabilization) ?
    The only thing I know is the 20-60mm on the S1 gives better dynamic range but more rolling shutter.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. The big difference in specs is that the 10-25mm is f1.7 throughout, whereas the 20-60mm starts at f3.5 (equiv to f1.7 on MFT for depth of field) and slows to f5.6 at the longer end. For this reason, the 10-25mm is better for video, but for general use the 20-60 gives you a similar experience at a lower price. As for rendering, I feel the 10-25mm had the edge and the stabilisation from the bodies is similar. I think the GH5 / G9 with the 10-25mm really is a classic combo unless you need or desire full-frame for some other use.

Wonder if 24-105 is the same, but for now I've resorted to using Tamron 28-75 adapted from Nikon F. Surprisingly, it is parfocal about 2/3 of the way so it's great for video, and it's quite cheap used. Yep, but you will need to be satisfied by the AF on the bodies if you're not manually focusing.

    Now if they'd just do a lightweight l mount camera I might be tempted. Stay safe.

    Gordon, why didn’t you mention the maximum aperture in the title?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because writing f3.5-5.6 takes up a lot of space and puts people off when there's too many numbers. Plus there's no confusion as there's only one Lumix S 20-60mm and I describe the aperture straightaway.

    Now you just need a smaller L-mount S-camera. These S-bodies are still huge.

    This is the TH-camr lens. I actually asked Sony and Sigma for a 2.8 or 1.8 version on their Twitter page.

      Yes it should do as an L-mount lens.

    This or the 18/40 with the s5?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmmm, depends how much the size matters. The S5 is pretty chunky, so the 20-60 is a good match size-wise, so I'd go for that and have the extra reach.

      It's half the price of the 24-105! What other full-frame lens do you know with a similar range for 599?

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cameralabs well, I don't know, but f/3.5-5.6 is just not very impressive. A quick search gives me the Canon EF 24-105 F3.5-5.6 IS STM which seems to have a more reasonable price.

      20mm vs 24mm is significant. Perhaps not to you, but I think Panasonic should highlight that difference.

      To be fair, it's pretty clearly labelled, what were you expecting from a 20-60? For it to magically extend to 100?
