    Harry Houdini visited John Henry Anderson's grave when he visited Aberdeen. Unfortunately he found the headstone in disrepair and so paid for It to be restored and also its perpetual upkeep. It explains why it is in much better condition than many of the other headstones In the churchyard.

    I've been a subscriber for a while now and enjoy your videos immensely.
    I have noticed however that you aren't getting anywhere near the amount of veiws you deserve.
    Have you considered advertising your channel around the city? I feel that a lot of folks would be interested in watching your work if they only knew it existed.
    Please keep it up, you really are very good at this👍

      Hi Callum - many thanks for the kind words.
      I make these videos because I enjoy making them and I enjoy finding new angles to think about things - in this instance I hoped to tell a bigger story about how the current tapestry of denominations came about from a local angle - I think it helps to contextualise questions we ask ourselves when we spot things walking around the city - ie “what is that?” “Why is that there?” “How did that come about?” - I do it for my own curiosity more than anything else but am very happy to read that people are enjoying these videos.
      I think it’s interesting to see how video views and word about them grow organically without interaction from myself - I sometimes spot them being talked about on Facebook or Reddit, which is pretty cool - so no plans to advertise but I appreciate the sentiment!

    Fantastic. You beat me to it. I could never have done the cracking job you have succeeded in doing. I have always wanted to find out how many Kirks there are in Aberdeen and the dates seem to be around 1880 when Aberdeen fairly grew giving I would think a lot of building and design work. Great stuff.

      Many thanks for the kind words Beau - a more comprehensive list than mine which covers closed and contemporary churches - although I have found that it is definitely not “complete” it’s pretty close:

      After I complete part 2 my list of historic churches should be close to 80 total.

    There must have been a colossal amount of building work going on in Aberdeen from the mid 1800s. I'm struggling to imagine the amout of workforce needed to build these beautiful buildings .

    • @duthies
      @duthies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1800s must have been a generation of grafters. Not only to build these but to hew the granite out of the ground and dress it as well.
      It's hard to imagine, but looking at street plans you can see where the Stewart Milnes of the day got their patches of land and built great rows of houses - all similar, yet compared to todays housing schemes they look downright bespoke.
      I guess the creative flourish of a smattering of pink granite may have been the deciding factor in purchasing from one developer over the other. Imagine trying to decide which new house you want to buy but you're weighing up if you prefer the flair of Argyll Street versus the large rooms of Desswood Place - rather than weighing up if you want the free LCD or the Washing Machine.

      Hi - that’s the Aberdeen batallion headquarters. I’m sure I’ve looked that up before and I can’t find any record of it being a church - seems it’s just always been a hall.

    How come they (almost) all have the spire to the side instead of in the center?

    • @duthies
      @duthies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question! I’m going to have to look through all the photos together to see how many are offset and if there’s any pattern with the architect or period.

    • @dcbsmt
      @dcbsmt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duthies Well, I didn't count but of those that did have a spire the majority seemed to have it to one side. That's another thing that seemed strange to me: the many churches that didn't have a tower at all.
      It must be some architectural tradition or trend to have the spire on the side. Maybe a peculiarity of the British Isles.

    • @duthies
      @duthies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dcbsmt some of the spires were only built after the main body of the church was complete as and when funding was available. Rubislaw church is one example. Sometimes they never managed to raise the money and the spire went unbuilt - St James on Union St is an example of that - both are in Part 1. You can see what St James would have looked like in it’s illustration in Gammie’s book.
      Perhaps designing churches with offset spires allowed them to be built in this way. I imagine it would take a lot of re-working the roof to add a spire in the middle at a later date.

    • @dcbsmt
      @dcbsmt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duthies That's a good point. Slapping a tower to the side of a building later is certainly easier than trying to wedge it in in the middle somewhere.

      No statues brought down here - but at the same time, I don't think he have any statues dedicated to businessmen in general - never mind ones linked to the slave trade.
      We've got Albert and Victoria - who had a really good relationship with Aberdeen (thinking of making a video about that), King Edward, Robbie Burns, Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, and then I think there's just General Gordon. Oh, then there's MacLeod's statue (co created penicillin) which is new. Most of the others are obelisks or abstract art. Different culture in Scotland I think - we tend to celebrate philanthropists and Scottish heroes rather than folks who made the empire rich.

      @@carolinetarrant2486 sorry not sure. The only corner I can think there there’s more than one statue is on Union Terrace and Union Street. King Edwards statue which is flanked underneath by a couple others, was removed briefly for cleaning while Union Terrace Gardens was being refurbed recently.
