The first line of The Maiden 😳. I truly loved this-hoping to read them all, though it may not be before the prize is announced. I did finish The Hangman last night-a very curious book, I almost need to reread it to better connect the story now that I know how it ends. The Wren The Wren should be coming up soon through my library. And Enter Ghost sounds fascinating.
I just started All That She Carried, my first from the nonfiction list, and it made me think I may try to switch back and forth between the fiction & nonfiction lists. Especially if I tie together themes, like you mentioned in the unboxing video with Simon. Thanks for another fab video! ❤
PS. Just finished watching…you truly have a gift for honing in on the subtleties that the author’s first line is telling us. And you’re so lovely to listen to. I don’t have book-friends, so I’m so grateful for your videos-I feel like I’m enjoying a good book-chat with a friend over a cup of tea.

I tend to jump into a book and take off running without giving the first line much thought. However your insightful commentary of each line has convinced me to slow down a bit and ruminate on the first line and why the author chose to start a book that way. Thank you.

First line is a very smart way to go about it. I don’t like knowing too much and preferably avoid the blurb (at least in its entirety), so I really might start doing this! Thank you, Louise!
Enter Ghost would be my personal first read for sure. I absolutely loved Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa, and I have lots of Palestinian literature yet to read as well. Also, Nightbloom and the Karen Lord book tickled my fancy from those first lines as well, haha.

I have been on a huge nonfiction kick lately. I can’t seem to get into any novels for the last few weeks… but this opening line trick is great! I am about to dive into Brotherless Night because I can’t stop thinking about that opening line!

Thanks, Louise!🌷I’m not going to read the whole longlist, so I’m now trying to figure out three or four books which I may find appealing. Reading opening lines was a brilliant idea! ♥️I read Enter Ghost last year, attracted by the performance of Hamlet in Arabic which is at the core of its plot, but I also found it has so much to offer in terms of understanding the complex position of Palestinians in Israel and their daily struggle with it. Right now, I’m considering And Then She Fell, Restless Dolly Maunder, River East River West and The Blue Beautiful World. However, I know from past experience that it will take me a couple of weeks of listening to booktubers and reading reviews before I make up my mind. Last year this strategy worked beautifully and I read I’m a Fan, The Marriage Portrait, Trespasses and Black Butterflies, which all ended among my best reads of 2023.📚🥰

This is the first year I’ve ever discovered this whole world of people who participate and pay attention to the woman’s prize (I’m so happy to be here lol!!) but I feel a bit out of the loop because of it. I have no idea when the shortlist/winner announcements happy - I don’t know WHERE these announcements happen or anything like that. All I know is my bookshelves are going to be overflowing if I get too invested 🤣

My first reads will be Kate Grenville (had to be my first), then Nightbloom, Enter Ghost and The Wren.
And thanks to Simon, I have to also read Let us Descend "The first weapon I ever held was my mother’s hand". That one will be just a little bit later on though :) Only onto my second from the non-fictions "Eve".

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Surprisingly, I have access to most of these in some fashion in the US. The only one I’ve read already is Western Lane from the Booker list. I’m starting with Hangman since I’ve had it checked out from the library for ages now. So many books to read and the International Booker List comes out next week!
Western Lane is also the only book on the list I have read, and I really enjoyed it. About half-way through I read a 2-minute tutorial about squash on TH-cam as I knew nothing about this sport, and it explained enough for me to understand what was going on. I loved Taylor Jenkins Reid's Carrie Soto is back, too, which is about a tennis pro.

I, myself, believe that authors pay a great deal of attention to that first line, so it is important, BUT, when I am in the bookstore, I am more likely to randomly open the book and read a page or two further in and see how I feel about it. I used to skip over “first line” videos, but they’re actually super helpful! I especially appreciated it here as I don’t know where to begin after the several I have. I have read Megan Nolan’s Ordinary Human Failings and it really stuck with me, so I’m pleased as punch it made the list. A worthy selection! This was really helpful! Thank you for doing this. I have now bumped some up my list (Brotherless Night for example). I read Western Lane last year and it's really a book about family and grief. The squash thing has kind of become a thing. I wish people would look beyond that because it is a really sweet book.

The opening line of a novel is so important (the powerhouse one in The Heart’s Invisible Furies comes to mind). I am not going to read the longlist this year. I’m regrettably not excited about it (having read six already and only really liked one) but am going to read a few selectively (definitely Soldier Sailor) and see what is on the shortlist. On the other hand, the nonfiction longlist is proving to be quite worthy!
