Love your set up. I just bought a generator today. I'm not worried about a hurricane but we do have tornados in the spring. Now there saying Were Saposed to get 12 inches of snow by end of this week. And possibly 1/2 to 1/4 inch of ice under all the snow. Last time we had a major power outage was in 2009. Power was off 2 weeks. But this time I'll be ready. My generator is duel fuel also. Thanks for sharing and God bless From Kentucky land between the lakes. And also love your jack Russel. I lost mine to cancer and yours looks a lot like mine. He was 14 yrs old and miss him very much. 🇺🇸
Doc You're the best. As a nurse who's life is about thinking ahead, you explain "stuff" just how the regular guy can understand. I do wonder, how many propane tanks or gas containers we'd need for a 7000-9000Kw Generator? I'll figure it out but just think you're the best.
Where I am in England I endured power outages with some regularity for a couple of years, so I purchased a small generator. Unless I had frequent extended outages or really wanted to spend the money, I wouldn't bother with hardwiring a transfer switch either. I set the generator up outside, and run an extension cord through the mailbox. I then connect the essentials onto that. More often than not. outages here only last a couple of hours; it's very rare outages in my area last for days. The last time I remember a power outage lasting days was The Great Storm back in 1987...
You are correct about the generator being grounded to the frame. In this case the nuetral wire is bonded ( connected to the ground in the power head) if their is a short it will trip the generator circuit breaker. Most generators will have a small decal by the ground post (screw) staying if it is nuetral bonded to your ground or not. Most champion generators are. Thank you.
Doc have you had any problems with frying sensitive electronics? Wondering if I would be OK just putting a surge protector on the end of the extension cord
Short of hard wiring to house, there are electrical plugs that can be permanently installed through an outside wall permitting generator to be plugged in outside and power cord connections inside. Very simple and cheap.
I would provide an earth ground as an added protection in the event of a lightning strike. Your home owners insurance may ask you if it was properly grounded and may not cover any damages if not. Best to check with your insurance carrier first. ALWAYS BE PREPARED
Good stuff. I am a potato chip vendor down here in Tampa, and when Irma came thru, there were so many People lining up at the Publix/Winn-Dixie to get Water, Food, on and on. just goes to show how many are not prepared.
I wired to my main panel so I can run either heat (if ice storm cuts out power, and we are freezing), or summer storm cuts power and we are burning up we can run the central A/C
All well and good everyones needs are different we have no alternative heating source in the winter we live in Nova Scotia and house needed to be hardwired to run a heat pump. Have a 7500 watt Champion it runs almost everything in house but dryer and who needs that when power is out.
"We're the only ones in our neighborhood with a generator"..Oh yes, I know that feeling here in Greensboro. We too have accumulated a "storm kit" over the years that allows us to be fairly comfortable when Duke Power goes bye-bye. Gas hot water, small two burner camp stove atop the kitchen stove, etc. The only difference is the interlock on the power panel that lets me plug in the dual fuel 9200w generator directly.
Hey Doc. What is best cords to use for generator? Either the 120v/30 amp with fan extension you have in this video or plug a couple extensions from the regular outlets on the generator? We have a room set up for emergency after a hurricane which we need to run a small A/C, Fridge, TV, laptop and maybe small microwave. I see folks using two cords from the outlets on generator but seems the fan extension from the 30amp would be better for these type devices. Thanks
Nice review. Got the bigger generator sitting in my Amazon cart. Problem being the the extended warranty. I realize Doc isn't responsible but the cost is $75 and in the Q&A section it seemed to imply it doesn't cover 3/4 years after the Champion warranty? Odd no? Any suggestions? THX
'Great video' well done. Never underestimate the L-5 20 connection (see my Briggs Generator video and read description on channel page). Hurricane Sandy came to my neck of the woods at ground-zero. Family was ready, and 'we' overcame Sandy's wrath via preparation.
Thanks for the info. Doc!! Great video. I do have to get food supply. I have these rechargeable lamps. They come with to lithium battery. These are great lamps.
Hey Doc, appreciate the video for sure. Regarding your storage shed in the garage with 30-year shelf life food, should you be concerned with heat all you storage items receive during the summer months? I live in Ohio and my garage gets pretty darn warm (90F or more i guess) during the later summer months. Most food items and medicines have a storage temperature tolerance. Thoughts?
Awesome prep, common sense. My emergency stuff is all over the house. Going to get consolidated into a cabinet 👍😁. Thanks for all you do, team Doc! (I could NEVER hate any of your videos!)
Hi Doc. Thanks for passing on the knowledge. Gives me peace of mind to have a reference for preparedness. Keep up the good work. Love the lawn vids too!
Hey Doc after Michael passes through we are going to have lower temperatures... at what temperature will the crab grass start to die and what can I do to thicken up my Bermuda so I dont have to use pre emergents
I need to start getting more food supplies I have 1 week for 2 people and a box of MRE's. I normally have a couple cartons of bottled water, generator is set up.
It's actually pretty easy to wire it to your box, wouldn't cost $1000 for an electrician to do it unless you called one of the big companies. I bet you could have done it yourself.
he had a 240V generator but it was too "heavy" .... LOL so he downgraded to a 120V "lighter weight" generator ... IMO, i don't give a shit if its 120 lbs .... Its a 240V generator, i'm going to MOVE it to where its needed ... And how many times does he move the previous 120 lb generator ..??
Just watched your video on your dual fuel generator, great. I noticed some of the items on your top shelf might have to be rotated, do you ever do that?
Your grass looks good for being scalped😁what size of generator would I need ?1 person 2 furry kids. I have natural gas fire place, only would need for frig, only 1000 sq.feet house. Ps. Don't forget doggy bones!!

Doc you're my kind of people prepared not panic love you brother
Got the same duel fuel generator...love it.... only run propane so you dont have worry about clogged carbs
Are you concerned with high THD with generators for sensitive electronics?
Doc. Another great and helpful video. Thanks
Good job man
Doc have you had any problems with frying sensitive electronics? Wondering if I would be OK just putting a surge protector on the end of the extension cord
I have a fridge and Deep freezer. Do you think this would power them both? Nothing else

Is it good idea to plug the other end of cord into a standard or 220 wall outlet. How you do it. ? I seen your other end had multiple plugs.
Good stuff. I am a potato chip vendor down here in Tampa, and when Irma came thru, there were so many People lining up at the Publix/Winn-Dixie to get Water, Food, on and on. just goes to show how many are not prepared.

Wind will blow the sharp aluminum edge off directly into the cord, wow

And yes, I started up both of our generators (3100w & 9200w) Tuesday.
Doc why don’t you hardwire your generator to your house? 😬

Your dogs are so cool Doc!!
Great video! Be safe.
Doc you and the family take care and be safe. I hope it is a nonevent for you but you look prepared.
I just bought that generator , hope the UPS wont drop it. lol
How does this do with electronics? We’re buying a generator this year and I was told we need an inverter generator.

Great tips, will use here in the Texas Gulf coast! I hope you & your family stay safe during Michael

Hi Doc, how is the Champion holding up in this two years? I am planning to buy one :).
What’s wrong when you can’t get the gasoline part of the engine to run but the butane runs real good
Where in Georgia are you located? I’m in Augusta and it’s headed directly for us late Wednesday early Thursday.
Good Luck! 👍🍀🙏🏻
Hey Doc after Michael passes through we are going to have lower temperatures... at what temperature will the crab grass start to die and what can I do to thicken up my Bermuda so I dont have to use pre emergents
Super juice is helping my yard.
Great content, Doc!
Doc did you ever think about building a small generator shed or buy one just curious?
I need to start getting more food supplies I have 1 week for 2 people and a box of MRE's. I normally have a couple cartons of bottled water, generator is set up.
I've gotten about 15-20 inches of rain since I put down my pre emergent (about a month ago). Should I put more down or does it not work that way?
Great video Doc, also add like you have in your previous video, fill up your gas tank in the cars..
Hope all is well good buddy! Hang in there and get us some good hurricane videos

I Love your dogs running around having a blast on the beautiful lawn. Lol. Thanks for all the videos. They are so helpful
How do you do hot showers?
propane hot water Heater. Cheeper to use and you can go up to 80Gallons

Most important question , does you coffee stay fresh ?
Hey Doc...are you ok? Is your family and pets ok? Just let your subscribers know you are doing good after Hurricane...thanks
I don't see the most important thing...WATER!!
I addressed in the other video. We have 29,000 gallons stored. (pool)

Looking forward to the year of lawn care products!
This is the generator I saw at "Tractor Supply". Dual fuel is a great option! Thanks for the review.
Nice job! Can't wait to see how that grass recovers from the scalp. Should be amazing!
