I made several trips on Mr. Warner's commercial freighter/ferry, the Ata, when I was a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Tonga 1976-1978. I just happened upon this video in a Google search and am very glad to see Peter and Mano still sailing the high seas.

But he died when he turned 90 when his boat capsized and he and a 17-year-old jumped off and made it to the jetty but the ambulance crew couldn't save him .
Looks like he lived a really good life and the way he wanted to live it .
He looks like he was a real gentleman and a person full of kindness and wisdom

Peter died crossing the bar in this footage. Ballina bar. It is treacherous.
      RIP what a wonderful man.

I just read the story in The Guardian today about Peter Warner's rescue of the boys who were marooned on the island for 15 months. A wonderful story about human kindness during adversity. I guess Hollywood only likes drama and conflict.

Me too, such a brilliant story and now I'm reading about the island and it's history and Tonga in general.

someblokecalleddave1 - yes - that point intrigued me too - thanks for the tip about the article - tragic and not told in NZ history about ‘blackbirding’

Also read the story in the Guardian today by Dutch journalist Rutger Bregman. Fascinating and so beautifully written. This short clip has brought the tears to my eyes! So wonderful to put the faces to the story and to hear them speak. What wonderful human beings - we need more stories like this! Truly inspiring and uplifting.

I also read the moving rescue story in the Guardian and was captivated! The title of Peter Warner's movie was never mentioned, so I was searching for it on Google. So pleased to see the faces of these two men and to witness the friendship and adventure that evolved from that chance encounter. I hope the movie will come available soon!

That article mentioned that Channel 7 in Sydney told their story back in 1966. Check out the following video. I can't wait!
