I was far too young to comprehend the deeper meaning behind when I watched this movie played by Daniel Day Lewis and Juliette Binoche on the adaptation of this book The Incredible Lightness of Being, just thought it was sad and rather sexual than sentimental. But now that I experience a matter of life decision choosing to remain or leave a previous world class capitalist city that is now totally politically “correct” in alignment with its hard core communist mother nation………..I absolutely got it. To me, those who chose to remain (especially those have foreign passports) have to start to live a life of lightness - nothing matters anymore, just survive like an animal, and those who choose to leave and embark a new life at foreign country, the ‘heaviness’ of survival in daily lives carrying those political/emotional trauma from the last residing city……..Lightness and heaviness just don on each individual, what kind of life do you want to live? How meaningful can you make out of it?

You have no idea how much I hate this book. Regardless, good summary

Why do you hate this book?

@@ShanniBananni It’s a little hard to explain, but I’ll try. I’m not really a fan of the writing decision of explaining what the characters are thinking and how their minds work explicitly. I think this book would be much better if the character’s motivations and fears were sprinkled throughout actions and decisions they make instead of outright saying what they are. Thoughts on this?

@@chimp4225 I think is a kind of book you enjoy if you really like philosophy and overthinking things like me. I’m a weightness person, not a lightness one

@@egl2416 I'm a weightness person too, hence why I love Nietzsche, though I would dispute compartmentalising Nietzsche as this video does.

@@chimp4225 It’s for that very reason that I like the book. Deconstructing the narrative in the way that Kundera does, was a revelation to me and he uses this technique in just about all of his books.

👡👞👠 I read Milan Kundera's book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" then saw the movie, hoping that it would enlighten the meaning of life in some way like the unique title. But, unfortunately, actual plot lines were pedestrian and boring, more commonplace than transcendent. I didn't think it deserved all the international accolades and seemed rather arty and pretentious. To me, it remains the perfect example of how a great title can sell a book and convince you that it's deeper and more meaningful than it actually is. And its author...
