Hope you feel better soon Emma! just letting everyone know if they're sneaky like me that there are many libraries that only require you to sign up online which lets you have multiple libraries added on Libby... which means more books for you and more support for libraries across the country! :)
Just wanted to say that he footage from botanical garden was absolutely stunning 💚 So sorry to hear you got sick, all the best for you and your partner, hope everything will get better soon❤ Also, congratulation on you degree!! I loved following your academic journey here it's so motivating seeing how hardworking you always are. Take all the time you need to rest, we'll always wait for you. I hope you'll be able to see The Nutcracker in the near future, I can't imagine how dissapointing this must have been. Sending you much love 💞
YOUR VOICE IS SO COMFORTING !!!!! the entire atmosphere and vibe of you and your content in general. i’m not joking when i say you are my favourite; my comfort creator. CONGRATS ON FINISHING YOUR DEGREE i cannot wait to see what you do next i adore you oh my god
I have only read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir with one of my students which was amazing, so I was shocked to hear these quotes from Artemis...wow. It's so strange, if you read PHM it's as if it was someone else writing it. Now that I know this I wonder if he had ever made an apology or if he took that into consideration when writing his newer books. Hope you feel better btw
Great to see you back 😊 hope you're feeling much better and recover quickly if you aren't. Sorry you had to get hit by COVID, essay season, and Andy Weir at almost the same time 😔 that certainly doesn't sound like much fun. Also congrats on finishing your degree!! 🎉 I've just got one more semester left myself so we'll see how that goes. Hope you have a fantastic holiday season 🥰🎄☃️🎁☕
thank you so much! oh my gosh amazing that's so exciting, what courses do you have left for next semester? I miss western so much:') have the best holidays over there too :)
I dunno, I found Martian to be pretty great (probably mostly because there's minimal human interaction, just the protagonist on Mars being a MacGuyver), and Hail Mary, though I can't say why without spoiling some major plot points. Artemis, though? I think I'd made myself forget most of the problems with that book. Emmie brought it all back. What an unmitigated dumpster fire of a book.
@@emmiereads I'm actually in history at King's so most of my courses are there, but I'm taking a couple at Huron next semester, one of which is on late 19th/early 20th century spiritualism and occultism which I'm pretty excited for. That + my last ever course with my all-time favourite prof, which is on Canada and the Second World War, and also the last round of Kings' weird European philosophy/history/literature program that I've been in since first year (which this year is all 20th century stuff - the prof's a specialist on Beckett so hopefully we'll be finally doing some of that because I haven't read him before 🤞). Those are more or less the highlights - excited to have a nice break for now though 😊
@@safe-keeper1042 Never read The Martian myself, I enjoyed the movie though - if I'm honest it's not a big priority, I'm just not a big sci-fi kind of guy, but perhaps I'll get to it at some point, it does seem pretty interesting
Big hugs to you, (germ free internet ones), I hope you and your partner continue to get better quickly. Remember even after you feel better, there is often residual lingering issues - cough, brain fog, tiredness.... rest and heal all you can for as long as you need. I wanted to go see The Nutcracker too, but couldn't get tickets on a day that would work. Watching you finish up your degree felt a bit emotional for me, I've been watching you grow and expand so much through the last few years. I loved hearing about all your school reading. I look forward to seeing what new horizons you journey towards now.
oh Emma, hope you can rest up and feel better soon! Congratulations on finishing your degree! Take the time you need to feel better, we will be here for your next video when you are ready!
Yes, I did so much mean to say Congratulations, but as is typical for me I got caught up doing my thing and forgot. So, Congratulations Emma - we're all so proud of you.
I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling so hard with covid ❤. Somehow I’ve managed to make it this far without it, but I’ve had a very symptomatically similar chronic illness for about 10 years and I hope it starts to improve for you too. It’s so tough when you have things you want to do but your body just refuses. I actually started watching you when you were struggling a lot with the concussion, and found I related to a lot of the things you said then, so I really hope it’s not bringing back bad memories for you. Rest as much as you possibly can and feel better soon ❤
so glad to hear you haven't had it but sending you all the love - I know what you mean and ah yes it has been a little bit for sure, I've had a ton of dizziness and vertigo these past weeks and it's hard not to think back:/ Thank you so much, take care of yourself as well
Artemis was one of the more egregious cases of men writing women I think I've ever seen, if not THE most. It makes me think that Andy Weir is terminally online, like I cannot... It's baffling how bad it is and how little I've seen it talked about.
Loved Artemis in so many ways and for so many reasons, so this'll be interesting. edit: fokk, wait, no, I was thinking of Project Hail Mary. I too was incredibly frustrated and confused by Artemis. Carry on 😅
i haven't sat down to watch any of your videos in a while for whatever reason but i'm so glad i clicked on this one, those quotes from artemis had me absolutely dying 😭 please review more bad books!!
Emma, your transitions in this video were next level hilarious. Going from dissing Artemis to your "don't listen to the haters" audible ad has me cackling. Then switching from "winter is going to be so great" joy to "then I got Covid" was so unexpected. Sorry you got Covid though. ☹️ I hope your symptoms don't last too much longer and you're feeling better soon. Once you're better, I'd love for you to film a tour of a Toronto library now that you have a card. I always love seeing what different libraries look like and am sure others do too!
Covid has kicked alot of us down the street! Sorry to hear that you've been "down for the count" but my prayers are for your complete wellness, Dear Emma. Hope you can enjoy the upcoming holidays!
I hope that you feel so much better soon! You have a lovely ginger cat! 😺 I'm currently reading a nice old, well lived in copy of "The Portable Chekhov" from Penguin Books. The Chameleon! The Culprit! Heartache! The Cherry Orchard! All included. 😊
CONGRATS ON FINISHING YOUR DEGREE!!! It’s so wild because I’ve been following you for almost 3 years now 🤯 I hope you and your partner are feeling better now, and this was still a great video, despite the dreaded c-word 😩
I didn't like Artemis back when I read it, but it was one of my first adult sci-fi/fantasy books, so I think a lot of the cringey parts went over my head - I honestly don't remember anything about the book. Too bad you didn't just read Project Hail Mary instead. I liked most of it, and it was so cute 🥰
PHM is adorable. Really a unique kind of book. Do yourself a favour and read as little about it as you possibly can before diving into it, though, it's one of those books that takes some really unexpected turns ;) .
My grandmother has being enjoying her coffee from that cup since I was a little girl. Being 2,323 miles from her is hard but seeing the little things around that remind me of her put a smile on my face. Thank you for that.
COVID got me this past february in my first teaching job… it made me feel terrible and since then I’ve been grateful for every day I feel healthy and full of energy😂
I was just thinking about you😭😭 gonna watch it in my lunch break. hope you're fine now or getting better. Thank you for bringing happiness to my days, love you
I'm so sorry you were sick and hope you're better now and can enjoy your Christmas. I am reading "Echo North" now on your recommendation. For another winter themed book, maybe check out J.R.R. Tolkien's retelling of the Kalevala (Finnish myth) called "The Tale of Kullervo." Take care, Emma, and have a good week! P.S. Finished my yearly goal early so gotta up the number of books for next year!
thank you! glad it hit before Christmas for sure, ooh I'm debating picking up Echo North next actually! ah amazing congratulations and have a lovely week yourself!
I finished my PhD on Friday and had the same feeling of it being a random weekday and I've literally completed education! Had some major burn out so hoping once I've recharged it will hit me haha
Hi Emma, So sorry you and your partner are ill with the Covid. Thank you for making this video for us even though you were so sick. The filming of the turtles and plants was gorgeous ! I am a huge Ballet fan, and I love The Nutcracker. I can't wait for you to see it, it's a Magical experience that you will never forget. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Healing vibrations, Cindy
I had read both The Martian and Project Hail Mary like a year ago and enjoyed them for the science behind them, gave it around like 4 stars or so, don’t remember but I had Artemis with the bundle that was given to me and when I read the synopsis for it, I don’t know what it was but it didn’t gravitate me to read it (my inner self knew, she was trying to save me) A few months later I try to give it a shot but had an inkling to check the goodreads reviews AND BOY. did i just save myself from reading a god-tier annoying book. I read similar reviews as the one you read and when I saw an update on your goodreads, giving this book a one star, i cackled bc i just knew you’d hate it. happy i didn’t have to go through reading that book, sorry you did though but ur a champ for not having DNF’d it.
i bought artemis and ended up unhauling it before ever reading it. its so interesting that he is praised for featuring "women in STEM" in the Martian which was also praised in the film adaptation... then he writes this AFTER. i really enjoyed the martian, but i'd probably have a veryyyy different reread experience
so disappointing to hear that about Artemis! I loved Project Hail Mary. Covid sucks, i'm sorry you're dealing with that and hope you're feeling better soon. Don't feel bad about missing videos, your health is the most important thing! Also, bummer about missing the Nutcracker ballet. It's one of my favourites :) hopefully you can see it next year or later this season.
Hope you and your partner feel much better soon, Emmie. Merry Christmas to you both from across the pond (Lincoln, England). 🎄 🎅 ❤️ Calcifer has grown into a beauty BTW! Merry Christmas to him too! ❤️ 🐈 😘
Take it slow, Emma! Covid kept me in bed for weeks (as well as giving me chronic fatigue syndrome + fibromyalgia lol) Be gentle to yourself. My Mum lost her taste too, and she said spicy food really helped out. Hopefully you recover soon, your videos are always a comfort but no one would begrudge you for taking a break whilst ill!
obviously i’m so sorry you were sick but i actually got covid at the same time as you- i’m just starting to feel better- so it’s comforting knowing i wasn’t alone getting covid for the first time🫶🏻
I'm sorry to hear you're unwell, hope you have a speedy recovery emmie!! On the topic of christmas-y reads Nutcracker Bleed by Lani Lenore is nutcracker with a dark twist, and definitely more scarier.
If you'd still like to catch an adaptation of The Nutcracker this holiday season, I'd definitely suggest checking out a few of the adaptations that are available for free here on TH-cam. There's a filmed from the stage version of George Balanchine's adaptation, performed a few years back by New York City Ballet. TH-cam also has the movie adaptation of Pacific Northwest Ballet's version, filmed in the late '80's, which has sets and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak--this one, in particular, leans into the fever-dream aspects of the story! I hope you're feeling better and congrats on your degree!!!
glad to see you back!! also, this was so relatable. I watched the vlog lying in bed with a fever and a week ago i also handed in my bachelor thesis. Hope you feel better :)
Sending you the most chill healing comfort vibes 💕🛌🦔🐰🦄🐈🦊💐🍋 (lol sometimes images say it better )😆. Ive watched your channel a few years now never commented so now is perfect; *thank* *you* for getting me through the most miserable (chronic illness) of times & for lighting the 'literature flame'. I've followed you vicariously through your studies & its been fab! Here's to your recovery 🤕🤒🤯🥳🤓🤗💥💃😊
Get well soon, Emma! I'm so sorry that you couldn't go and see the Nutcracker, but I'm sure you'll get the chance again in time. Also, congratulations on finishing your degree, even if it wasn't how you had wished to finish it. Sometimes life just throws a flaming semi truck at us, but the good thing is, it rarely keeps throwing them at you non stop. Hopefully life will start throwing more pleasant things at you again, like plushies! 🥺💜
hope u feel better soon, covid seems awful! i can't believe you could even focus on stuff honestly, i'm a mess when i'm sick. props to you for finishing your degree and still posting !!
please rest as much as you have to btw !! i have a couple of friends who've suffered from long covid and it genuinely fucking sucks. don't worry about posting if you need to prioritise your health and other things in your life :)
A question on the descriptions of Artemis as I haven't read it: could it be/ supposed to be negative? As in a reflection on what a place with no laws where you just throw people together does to people? So reduced to their basic instincts and needs-based behaviours and thoughts? But done poorly? Or do you think that this is not really contained in how he writes?
Emma darling, hope you get better soon. I love the place you show in the beginning of the vlog, with flowers, plants, turtles, fishes,... So sorry for this awful book, but, yes The Nutcracker is very cool! Ciao! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
seriously, nothing worse for the spirit than being sick. hope you are on the recovery path, & that senses of smell & taste have returned. Congratulations! on the completion of your degree! woot woot! take some time to recover. Ditto on the film from the conservatory. so relaxing. be safe!🪴
I was also sick with COVID for 10 days, and the brain fog and exhaustion stuck with me for about two months!!!! the worst part of it was that I tested + on the weekend before an admission test and I had to reschedule it (paying another full fee!), but still didn't perform as I should have because of all the complexities after COVID! Hope you recover soon Emma. eat well and do not forget light exercise =)
I tried to read The Martian by Andy Weir but hated every wasted minute of it (still not sure why it's so popular). No plans to try any other books by him! Emmie, I hope you & your partner are better soon! Sending positive vibes from the 🇺🇲.
MISSED YOU SO MUCH... i really hope you get well soon, just take your time and try so hard to go back to your normal life routine so you don't exhaust yourself more... ALSO congratulations on finishing your degree

@@emmiereads I am going to be a librarian, so, it was an index of astronomy papers!!!! I just hope it´s not a disaster... very difficult to make, because of the fever, but one can only hope. I hope you feel better now!
That reveals a hell of a lot about the author boasting about so many earthly inhabitants choosing to move to a fictionalized lunar city because it has no age of consent laws. Definitely repulsive.
Congratulations on submitting your last paper! When I did that, it felt surreal to me. Also, I hope you and your partner are getting stronger and feeling better day by day. Merry Christmas!
Hope you feel better! My husband and I had COVID for the first time this month and we got really sick. I know what you going through. Stay safe and warm 😊 🤗
Wait but how much does your library subscription cost in Toronto? I live in France and for me, depending on which library I go to, it's either free or 10€/year 🥲
Hi, Emma. Sorry you've been ill, especially with that particular crud. Hope you're feeling better now, and you can put your nightmares to good use in fiction, somehow. Worked for Poe & Lovecraft. Artemis sounds like Weir published his world-building notes and neglected to dramatize. He apparently also neglected to shed juvenile prejudices & grow up. Egad. Thank you for another good installment, despite being ill. Your insight and analyses are always reliable, I've found. It's appreciated. Be thee well. Namaste.
I have a question for Emma/anyone who has read and had similar thoughts on Artemis. I’ve never read Murakami but have heard that he objectifies women/does a horrible job of writing women. I’m wondering what makes Murakami different from Andy. What saves his books? You (Emma) seem to love his work despite having complaints. Is it just because he doesn’t try to have female main characters? Is there a purpose behind how he writes female characters?
I haven't read Artemis, so I can't compare both authors. But for me, Murakami's stuff always invokes a cold, uncanny atmosphere. So I partially handwave his men-writing-women tendencies as part of the detached, surreal world he's trying to create. Also, I don't remember Murakami writing anything as bad as the "metallic boobs" line Emmie quoted 😬
Hi Emma - I’m a great reader of classics in general but I’ve never mustered the courage to break into dickens. What would you recommend starting with? Also want to recommend Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell (and all her other books!). It’s one of my favourite children’s books but also stands the test of time. We’ve just had the best snowfall in London for years! Hope you’re ok❤️❤️❤️
I have read The Martian, Artemis, and Project Hail Mary and I am floored by the fact that the writer of The Martian and Project Hail Mary also wrote Artemis. I cant help but feel like it was the shit pile he had to write to get over the pressure to one-up The Martian. Project Hail Mary was that amazing follow up. I cant believe this was the Andy Weir book you read LOL.
I'd watched The Martian when it first came out, had heard a lot about the book and Project Hail Mary, and so when I spotted _Artemis_ in the second-hand bookstore, with its gorgeous cover, it was an instant buy. Thank god I didn't buy it first-hand, Jesus Christ it was so bad. Thank god it was so short, as well. Honestly I could've dealt with the excessive innuendos if the plot was half decent and if Jazz could just stfu for one second about herself.

Gosh, getting a double whammy with COVID and Andy Weir at the same time. Keep your head up! ♥️
I'm sorry to hear you're unwell, hope you have a speedy recovery emmie!! On the topic of christmas-y reads Nutcracker Bleed by Lani Lenore is nutcracker with a dark twist, and definitely more scarier.
ooh that sounds so up my alley, definitely adding it to my list!
Loved the botanical garden excursion.
Your vlogs bring me so much joy❤️
Hope you feel better :)
oof right there with you, hope you're doing better now and that's so incredible, congratulations!!!
haha thank you so much!!
i'm so sorry you feel so poorly, but i'm also so happy you finally finished your degree ♡♡♡
hope you're feeling a lot better now.
hope u feel better soon, covid seems awful! i can't believe you could even focus on stuff honestly, i'm a mess when i'm sick. props to you for finishing your degree and still posting !!
please rest as much as you have to btw !! i have a couple of friends who've suffered from long covid and it genuinely fucking sucks. don't worry about posting if you need to prioritise your health and other things in your life :)
hope you're doing well now emmie ♡ take care as always!!
thank you lovely!! sending you all the love
Hey, hope you feel better soon 🧡💛
A question on the descriptions of Artemis as I haven't read it: could it be/ supposed to be negative? As in a reflection on what a place with no laws where you just throw people together does to people? So reduced to their basic instincts and needs-based behaviours and thoughts? But done poorly? Or do you think that this is not really contained in how he writes?
This Cat got quite worried that “Andy” was on the shelves of the Cheshire Library luckily it was not.
Get better soon !
Teeth and Mists
Emma darling, hope you get better soon. I love the place you show in the beginning of the vlog, with flowers, plants, turtles, fishes,... So sorry for this awful book, but, yes The Nutcracker is very cool! Ciao! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love you Emma and i swear i'll watch this after the world cup final. VAMOS ARGENTINAAAAAAA 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 Okaay, i'll calm down, happy Sunday people 😊
Congratulations it was great😭❤️
At 0:56 Calcifer located a ticklish spot on your arm and stored the information for future use 😂😂
Nothing like reading the comments on Emma's videos to get a genuine laugh out loud chuckle - thx.
seriously, nothing worse for the spirit than being sick. hope you are on the recovery path, & that senses of smell & taste
have returned. Congratulations! on the completion of your degree! woot woot! take some time to recover. Ditto on the
film from the conservatory. so relaxing. be safe!🪴
Anyone going to talk about the visual metaphor in that poem at the metro station? Very unique way of saying dreams are possible for “all of us”
I was also sick with COVID for 10 days, and the brain fog and exhaustion stuck with me for about two months!!!! the worst part of it was that I tested + on the weekend before an admission test and I had to reschedule it (paying another full fee!), but still didn't perform as I should have because of all the complexities after COVID!
Hope you're feeling better and recovering! yep I had those two together just last week- covid and period. Doubles the fun!
MISSED YOU SO MUCH...
i really hope you get well soon, just take your time and try so hard to go back to your normal life routine so you don't exhaust yourself more... ALSO congratulations on finishing your degree
Wooow! You really got me in this one. I delivered my last paper for uni on Friday burning up... I do not have COVID, but I am very sick. I wish you get well very soon! Let's get better!!! I send you lots of love and good vibes. Greetings from Mexico
was such a struggle but congratulations!! what was it about?? I so hope you're doing better now
@@emmiereads I am going to be a librarian, so, it was an index of astronomy papers!!!!
Missing you a lot these days hope you are feeling good, take care🥰
so happy to be back! thank you lovely
Oh dear… I have Artemis on my shelf too… for ages I’ve been meaning to read it
I had the WORST nightmares when I had covid . Somehow managed to avoid it for ages. Sending you well wishes.
Project Hail Mary is pretty dire too (not sure why reddit constantly recommends it)
ohhh get well soon! Hope you're doing a lot better now and get well until Christmas
Hi Emma, sorry you got sick. Hang in there, this too shall pass. You'll be back better than ever. Congrats !! Merry Christmas !!!
Congratulations on submitting your last paper! When I did that, it felt surreal to me. Also, I hope you and your partner are getting stronger and feeling better day by day. Merry Christmas!
feel well soon
Hope you feel better! My husband and I had COVID for the first time this month and we got really sick. I know what you going through. Stay safe and warm 😊 🤗
Wait but how much does your library subscription cost in Toronto? I live in France and for me, depending on which library I go to, it's either free or 10€/year 🥲
The fruitful reward of 10 days off emmie
We missed you so muchh❤ get well soon Emmie😊
Your video shined on my screen like a bunch of cats cresting a hill.
That’s how I felt when I had covid. I would turn on art TH-cam vids and wake up just in time to see the finished art and fall back asleep
Got sick this year too :( it’s been a while so it sucks, especially during Christmas. Hope you’re doing okay!
Hope you feel better and thanks for the heads up with the midnight in everwood. I don’t know that I will purchase it now.
I don't remember much about Artemis but both Project Hail Mary (sci-fi) and The Martian (still sci-fi but more "sciency") are amazing books!!!!
I would say that Artemis isn't an example of a man writing women badly but just an example of this one guy being a creep.
I need to know which Dickens was making you cry. 😢 hope you're feeling better.
yes do tell!!!
Sincere hopes that your health will get better soon~ 🙏🌻
Get well soon! ❣
Namaste.
fr. It's one of those books where I wonder where the editors were.
I just got home from a tiring day and cuddled up in my bed to watch this video :)
Also, I don't remember Murakami writing anything as bad as the "metallic boobs" line Emmie quoted 😬
does anyone knows which dickens book emmie's reading in the beginning of the video?
Hi Emma - I’m a great reader of classics in general but I’ve never mustered the courage to break into dickens. What would you recommend starting with? Also want to recommend Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell (and all her other books!). It’s one of my favourite children’s books but also stands the test of time. We’ve just had the best snowfall in London for years! Hope you’re ok❤️❤️❤️
I started with Great Expectations and for me it was the perfect place! thank you so much for the recommendation
My partner and I are also on day 9 ish of covid recovery, and I am still sooo exhausted :( hope you start feeling better and more energised soon ❤️
I'm getting to this a bit late, but I hope you feel better soon! I had the big C this summer and it was NOT fun, so I hope you're taking care of yourself 💛
Emmie, Feel better soon 🥺❤
We appreciate Emmie for all of her hard work and effort. God bless her all the way.
