I’ve been told that only two stories exist, 1) man (or woman) goes on a journey and 2) stranger comes to town. I think it’s mostly true if you don’t try to apply it too literally.
What a great topic to talk about! The fact of the pod is that a whodunnit is a coloquial term for why dunnit. The mother/daughter body swap movie is Freaky Friday. Austin no longer a cinephile in my eyes. 😂
Great episode, guys! It's interesting to think about the number of stories that branch out of those 10 themes. Cool idea for a topic. Looking forward to the Lonesome Dove review!!
So true! Naruto, Star Wars, Dune, Terminator are a kid trying to find his way in the world. Lord of the Rings, Nightmare on Elmstreet, Pokemon, Saving Private Ryan are a group of friends trying to save the day from an evil force. They are all the same stories over and over with small details changed.
"Teeters my totter" is a brilliant phrase. At its core, it means joy that comes from something outside yourself (because you can't ride a teeter-totter alone). So it can just mean "this brings me joy" OR it can specifically mean that it was an equal and opposite force that brought you joy -- a differing opinion -- meaning "a friendly debate about our different opinions brought me joy." It could also be mean that something annoyed you. I thought at first this would be an erroneous use, but imagine you want to get off the teeter-totter and your counterpart refuses to let you off gently.
@@2ToRamble hahaha-I did continue on though. I appreciate the deep dives you guys do-it really provides context in all these different categories I didn’t really think to dive into myself
Finally a video that limits my TBR instead of boosting it, very much appreciated. Also, I guess this is the end of watching 2ToRamble then, I have seen it all already at this point :/
I recently discovered you guys and I'm really enjoying your stuff, If you're trying to read more Indie books, might I suggest Gunmetal Gods. It's my favorite indie series of all time (the fourth novel just got released) and it's like a middle eastern game of thrones but with Lovecraftian Monsters mucking about. And it has some of the best covers of all time, hope you consider adding it to your never ending tbr
Loveee this episode ❤❤ begging you guys to watch other booktubers romance recs 😂😂 I'm sure theres plenty wholesome and non spicy romances out there. skipped the horror part because I'm a big horror, but havent read the Annihilation / Southern reach series yet (waited for the new book to come out🎉)
Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd - Trading Places. Going back! A very fun movie, not sure how it holds up today though. Are either of you old enough to have been around when it was released, lol! :)
I agree that those are almost all of the fantasy stories, especially those published originally in English, but as a reader from a non-english speaking country who mostly reads literary fiction not in English, I've read a lot of stories that don't fit those categories. One example is "Old Masters" by Thomas Bernhard which is a novel written as a lot of intertwining rambles about the life and opinions of a character through the lens of another character, the book on the surface seems like one big confusing ramble of art criticism but in between the lines you see the observed character's development or, should I say, discovery. That's why I'm against this types of writing manuals, they try to fit every story in a box in a very reductionist way and end up influencing new authors to write the same thing inside the same boxes they create,. I'm not saying that the stories written that way end up being bad but there is alot more to be said in a lot more ways to tell. Nice video though, love the channel.
Justice for teeter my totter. Austin, it's awesome and so much fun! Don't let the voice of people dictate what you do. That's democracy... and we all know it's cringe.
It took me close to 32 minutes to realise Richard didn’t say “institutionalised superheroes” at the start, and instead said “institutionalised, superheroes.”
Great Discussion! I've read save the cat writes a novel and also the original save the cat (for screenplay), there's also a new version save the cat writes a ya novel but I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, but I'm curious about what in the writer's view differs so much - between novel and ya novel - that it's worth a whole new book. It was interesting hearing a bit of your opinion on musicals, I think I'll go check that episode you mentioned, I really don't like musicals xD the singing completely shatters my attention on the story. I'm not a big romance reader but Pride and Prejudice is on my top 10, if you want to check something on tv I recommend Something in the Rain, it's a Korean show great soundtrack, relaxed vibe, modern day simple and beautiful story :)
@@2ToRamble It’s a very practical book just like the one for novels, I read it out of curiosity for the original (screenplays aren’t really my thing), it’s a much smaller book than save the cat writes a novel. I think it might ruin movies for some people because as things happen you won’t be able to not see the beats 😅 it kind of changes how you receive the stories. I’m curious about the version for YA novels !
You said you've never read a good romance without smut looking to some of the Christian romance novel called Love inspired they're clean their romantic and they're sweet
Does Plumber coming to home to solve problem and payment issue occuring is "dude with the problem"? I am more of opinion is that it is dude with opportunity category. The completely new story type.
Each time I see someone claiming there is just X number of stories, I am thrown into a fit of anger. This has been so damaging for me as a writer. Stories are similar because they all are based in reality, and reality tends to work in the same ways. Trying to find those X stories is the biggest waste of time.
Austin, read this! Dudes, you gotta read Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft at some point. (I recommend "Pet Sematary" as a good introduction quick read to King)
Why does one host not simply consume the other and assume control of the podcast?
Bro was waiting for this to drop
Goblin spotted!
😂
Teeter totter, man, teeter totter.
I think they've both probably been plotting something like this for months now. It's only a matter of time...
Just recently discovered this podcast and now I'm already finding myself looking forward to Monday and Friday mornings, you guys are awesome!
Thankya so much!

I agree with the Richard rule. It’s important that musicals have good singers.
"Save the Cat" is such a great book. It definitely improved my plotting skills!
I fully endorse 2tolift
An out-of-bottle fantasy that’s well worth reading and I want to create greater awareness: The Scar by Marina and Sergei Dyachenko.

"Murder in the Air" by Peter Tremayne is a short stort about a murder committed on an airplane. It's pretty good

We havent!
I don't see a save the cat book link
Adding now sorry about that
So would we say that Mean Girls is an “Institutionalised” story? 😂
Lol - That or Rites of Passage!
I read that book years ago and it ruined movies for me 😂 worst decision of my life. It didn’t even make me a better writer

Great conversation guys but you'll just renamed the genre into a more descriptive name
I doubt flood story is that common. I want to see which cultures have flood stories except Abrahamic religions.
Babylonian Flood Story-Epid of Gilgamesh
Manu in Hindu Mythology
Flood story in Zoroastrianism as well
