DECLUTTERING MY ENTIRE MAKEUP COLLECTION TO FIT INTO ONE MAKEUP BAG | MAKEUP DECLUTTER 2019

  • Hello Low Buy Beauties! I decided I was LONG overdue to declutter my makeup, so I went through MY ENTIRE makeup collection piece by piece, and whittled it all down to fit into ONE makeup bag...like the olden days, pre beauty TH-cam guru and pre-Sephora app being on the front page of your phone.
Remember the days when all your makeup used to fit into one makeup bag? I was getting so overwhelmed with "stuff", that I decided to go through it and only keep options that I knew I really used. I actually think I could have gotten rid of more, but I definitely was challenged by "ohhh this is how much I paid for it" or "ohhh but I might need a berry red SOMEDAY" syndrome along the way.
I realize what I did keep may still look excessive (and that's because it probably is), but I think it's a slow but sure step to living with less and using what I have instead of buying new and being consumed by every new option or launch that comes along. 🙏🏻
PLEASE NOTE: I did mention how I would like to go Cruelty-Free moving forward in any makeup or beauty products I may consider in the future. I did keep some non-CF items here; my intent is to use these up and not repurchase in the future. 🐰

style apotheca yes I did it 1 year ago and I still haven’t finished the few products I kept. One advice I have - keep ONE of every major color/type. I have one red one nude lippy and a cream/powder blush etc worked for me. Takes the subjective thinking out a bit

I don't have much to declutter because I don't buy a lot but if I did have nice products like you, I would keep them until they are gone. Then you don't have to buy anything for a while. Unless it's like mascara or foundation but powders last quite a while.

I don't get it when people declutter something just on the basis of the product not being cruelty free. Like you already got it, might as well use it, you're just wasting product now. Not saying that you did that

I never had a lot of makeup, but I used only 1/3 of it. I wanted to keep eyeshadows and eyeliners, but I only wear mascara on my eyes, just in case. I decluttered and now I have one makeup bag for my everyday makeup : 1 under eye concealer, 1 spot concealer, 1 powder, 1 blush, 1 bronzer, 1 eye brow pencil, 1 mascara, 1 lip balm. I have an other makeup bag for special occasions : 5 lipsticks and 2 glosses. I still look forward to do my makeup even if I always use the same products ! I know what fits me so I stick to it :)

Okay first off, it’s not cheating. If you’re purging anything, that’s progress and that’s the only thing that matters. Secondly, I downloaded an app (Beauty Keeper) and it helped. If something is expired it tells you, and it’ll have all the dates. It made saying goodbye to stuff so much easier.

Decluttering as I watched the video, for the same reasons. Even though I’ve already been curating my makeup stash the last few months, I still declutter because I never go though all of my makeup, especially the ones I don’t use. It feels good to have a condensed amount that I ACTUALLY use on a regular basis!!

I do this every season! started just as a need because something broke open in my drawer and in cleaning it up I found half my expensive makeup was expired, dried, broken, etc. and I didn't even notice because I never used it. Now its ritual thats grown from make up to skin care, hair stuff, clothing and so on. makes life so much more streamlined and simple!

I just found your channel and this is my goal, for most of my life I had 1 eyeliner, 1 mascara, 1 blush, and 1 concealer and that's all I ever wore. I didn't need makeup, I look at photos from back then and I look glowing and radiant. I'm much older now (49 next week, yikes) and over the past year I've been downsizing my collection. I could easily fit my entire stash including my maybes in your bags.
My ultimate goal is to have one small makeup bag to where I can grab it and chuck it in a suitcase and know I have everything I need. I want to have enough room inside that bag (with my tools and brushes) to where I don't have to unpack it to work out of it, so I want to be able to see everything. I know myself, if I have to unpack it to see what's down below then I'll never dig past the top layer!
How's this working out for you? I should probably go see some of your newest videos to see if you posted an update, I just thought I'd tell you that I love your mindset!

@@Christinamychas I look forward to it! Today my goal is decluttering my nailpolish, I have several hundred bottles (WAY too much!) and I want to get down to a more manageable level -- it's so hard! I have lots of Chanel and other high end polishes and every single one is on the chopping block. I got through round one, now I'm swatching and comparing. Like if I want a light blue polish, which would I pick over the others? Wish me luck, it's hard to let go! I'm going to donate the declutter to the women's shelter, they are going to go nuts.
I look forward to your upcoming video!

This was helpful to watch. I think the size of your makeup bag looks great! Still room for variation and fun but still condensed and very reasonable for someone who enjoys makeup. I always had more makeup than everyone I knew. I had a really big caboodle in high school and I brought a bit less to college with me but I wish I could find the caboodle size that I had again because it truly was perfect for me! Maybe I'll look into getting the Sephora bag u have or a MAC one that is slightly larger at some point when I'm ready for a massive declutter!

I also ""declutter" makeup but I don't get rid of it. I just multi purpose it to use it out. I want to feel like I got my money's worth somehow. For example: Don't like a particular highlighter? Scrape some off and throw it in a facial mist for a dewy glow or mix in with some body cream for a nice sheen. I like to work with items to feel less guilty about buying things I don't need. Also.... the products I DO have keep my drawers full thus preventing me from buying even more things I dont need❤

I have downsized my collection over the past year to just the things I really use and love and only allow myself a few of each type of product. Amazingly what I have in my small collection is very similar to what you have, it cosmetics cc cream, glossier stretch concealer and cloud paints, Marc jacobs palette, hourglass blush, milk eye pigment etc, so am loving your taste!
I don't keep it in one makeup bag (although Im sure it would fit) as it bothers me when it's all chucked in, I have some small canvas draws that sit on my vanity and it's all organised neatly into those.

I'm not a big makeup person but small eyeshadow palettes are good since you like all the colors and then only fill in the gaps of what you're missing. I only have one go-to neutral 4 pan palette and one larger one with more colors, never felt like I'm missing something since I'm not a colorful makeup person

I have a makeup bag about the same size as your black one and its just got one layer of makeup on the bottom - I really don't have much makeup: 1 eyebrow thingy, like uhhh 7 lipsticks, 2 cream blushes, 1 eyeshadow palette, 1 foundation, 1 concealer, 1 bronzer, 1 highlighter. I have 3 brushes and also one nail polish (Essie, ballet slippers). Where I struggle is obviously with lipsticks...I don't wear them much anymore because of the pandmic and masks, but I love the colors! So probably I won't use them up, and eventually will have to toss them when they get expired and gross.

I've been paring down and retooling what I need in my makeup inventory, as well as skincare. However, let me say that I am 60, and my makeup needs have changed due to the fact that my skin is much drier due to menopause and hormonal changes, and then letting my hair color change. For the last 3 years I have given up on dying my hair, and my hair texture decided to change on it's own, due to hormones. It's gone from bone straight hair all of my life to wavy/curly! So, I am learning how to "redo"a lot of what's in hair care, skin care, and colors for my changing softer greyed down palette.
I had caramel light brown/blonde hair, 7N to 8N in the Summer. I am also a "summer" in the color me beautiful line, so you know that I am cool tones, mid range colors. My browns are now greyed taupes and brownish heathers. Instead of black near my face, I wear mid toned greys, blues, and heathered tones. Navy's for crispness. I do any of the wine reds very well, but no oranges or warmish tones. I've gotten them out of my makeup.
Like you, I used to be able to wear a lot of my makeup in 1 makeup bag, but not as big as your bag. 1 to 2 mascaras, now I have to have a primer as well. Then it's 2 to 3 BB creams OR tinted moisturizers. I do have 1 foundation, but wear it only in Winter, when I want either more coverage or moisture. Got rid of the powders, too drying for me. Use setting spray instead. I have about 3 different cream blushes, 2 powder blushes, 2 different bronzers, might get rid of a trio of blush/bronzer/highlighter that does not work for me. Pared down the lip products as well. Now, just a note to all the older gals, when you go silver/grey/salt n pepper, you WILL have to drop many of the nudes and wear COLOR. It's the only way to really still look alive, besides throwing color in a neck scarf or colorful top/blouse/sweater. Too much nude with grey hair, well...why even try then? It has to be blush and lipstick to color the face, I wouldn't go so much with eye color unless it's light pink, lt. orange (if that is your coloring) or nude tone there to cover any darkness after concealer or other corrector tone you may use. If you go with a lot of eye color, well, you might look like you are trying too hard, if you know what I mean. Unless you have a lot of crinkles on your eyes, you can use pearlescent, or shimmer, but no overt glitter. (maybe for Halloween and New Years.) But balance is the key to everything, and paring down to what is tested and true for you is what you know will work, and then you won't waste money, time and look weird or foolish. If it's something you can't buy all the time at the store order it online or on Amazon. That's a good way to replenish without going to the store and hearing products that you don't need or those of the wrong or "retired" colors calling out your name..Save those dollars!!

I've tried a huge declutter (because really, why do I have shelves of makeup when I wear it maybe once a week), but get overwhelmed. What has been working for me is a mini declutter any time I'm not satisfied with a makeup product or category. For example, I wore turquoise eyeshadow last week and hated it...so why do I have all of these colorful eyeshadows? That led to a huge purge and return to my neutral shadow collection. Just an idea for other people who might find tackling it all at once overwhelming.
I plan to get down to one makeup case. I just might take a whole lot longer to achieve it. ;)

I noticed that most of your makeup is high end. While I really loveeeeeee high end products and it is nice to splurge on these things..sometimes you can get the SAME EXACT thing with a drugstore product that costs so much less. Also, while I'm also on a low buy year.. I cut out all animal tested cosmetics..and most high end products are not animal cruelty free..another reason to scrap them. Hope this helped..much love xo

Its only true when for young skin. For mature skni especially 50+, often those "same exact" things look cakey and crusty and make you look 20 years older. The colors may be similar but the formulas aren't as refined. So no, not "exact".

just wondering.. instead of decluttering, why don't you shop your stash? that would make more sense considering your shopping addiction, because clearing out your makeup would give you more incentive to shop again as an excuse

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

nikibowe it could, potentially that is true. I went through what I didn’t use and stuck with my gut in terms of what I use and enjoy and what I don’t. I also tossed an insane amount of unused, expired makeup. I think decluttering goes hand in hand with shopping the stash - you rediscover old things and also say bye to old/unused/unloved things. All a process I think at least! Thank you!

I know you’re trying to declutter but getting rid of things that’s you love and will utilize isn’t a healthy way of doing it. Decluttering can become addictive in the same way that over purchasing can. I believe a TH-camr did a video recently called “ the dark side of decluttering.”

I just did a big declutter yesterday with my makeup. While I didn’t go crazy, this last year I “discovered” makeup videos on TH-cam and I do regret some of my purchases. When I lifted the bag of decluttered makeup, I literally felt nauseas and thought “this use to be money, what a waste.” And I vowed to NEVER let myself get crazy with makeup again, which I can say with 99% certainty I won’t. And generally when people declutter they DO KEEP the stuff they love and will use, and get rid of the stuff they don’t love/won’t use. After all, we only have one face and two eyes. One can only wear SO MUCH makeup. I’m loving this trend I’m seeing of decluttering. And I think MOST people who declutter (outside of makeup “gurus” who do this for their “job”) keep a minimal makeup collection. I think people are starting to see what a trap it can be to be super into makeup and have a “collection.” The cosmetics companies are laughing all the way to the bank. It’s about time the average makeup consumer wises up...

Heather Miyakawa I decluttered my old makeup also. Honestly I don’t wear a lot of make or buy a lot of makeup. My issue is I hang on to old stuff. So I threw out everything that I bought before 2019. They were all from 2015-2016. I was left with 1 small eyeshadow pallet, 1 foundation, 1 powder, 1 brow liner, 1 eyeliner, 1 mascara and 4 lipstick. I do not own stuff like bronzer, highlighter or even concealers. The stuff I was left with were literally the only stuff I actually use when I decide to wear makeup.

I declutter my makeup collection twice every year and get rid of things that just don't work for me are expired or just never reach for. That said, I do love all my makeup and wouldn't personally do an extreme declutter. If the product isn't bad or expired, I don't feel the need to get rid of it just for the sake of it. In case you’re still looking for input - you DO NOT have to spend $$$ on skincare. A lot of the times, drugstore products actually are the gentlest on your skin! I have hyper sensitive skin that is compromised due to using fancy, fragrance-chucked “organic” products that were doing my skin only harm. What has healed my skin are good drugstore fragrance-free products, although I do spend more on a sunscreen because I can’t seem to find a drugstore version that’s not chalky/greasy.

@@TrishasMusic I'm not sure where you live, but have you tried/do you have access to Asian sunscreens? I can't stand the feeling of sunscreen on my skin most of the time, but the formulations of Korean and Japanese sunscreen are so good. They're not super, super cheap, but much cheaper than high end American sunscreens, and I only use them on my face. Asian chemical sun filters also offer better UV protection than ones approved in the US. The Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV is my personal favorite, feels like a very light moisturizer (with slight dewiness).

  • @littlebearsasmr4630

Some tips I use to curb my spending are...
    - buy everything in cash as then you have to hand over more items and you can physically see what you have spent and have left
    - have money go into a savings account the same day you are paid so that you automatically have less to splurge on impulse buys
    - walk home from the shops or park further away. You wont want to carry lots of stuff back so will buy a lot less
    - make yourself too busy to shop, any time you feel the urge to splurge make other plans you will enjoy
    - watch videos/look into the environment more and it may scare you out of buying (atleast for a few days lol)

What I realized too is that my taste in makeup is very seasonal, and I wanted to swap out my summer make-up for more winter make-up. I put away the tinted moisturizer and the brighter blush and my more shimmery bronzer and a few other things that I just don't gravitate towards in winter. I think the term “collection” leads to our excuses to continue to collect.
They don’t call them TH-cam INFLUENCERS for nothing! There used to be a tag going around about 8-9 years ago, “TH-cam made me buy it”. It touched on all areas of consumerism. Some of reasons about make up and skin care were pretty funny. By this time, if you made a video, one knew how silly their excuses were for buying, ie: a lipgloss that you knew you hated because you’re long hair would get caught in it. Or diaper bag that so-in-so was reviewing because it had a place specifically for your wallet! (All diaper bags have plenty of room for your wallet) god knows how “What’s in your bag” videos has influenced us! Have you ever watch Decluttering videos from Christine (used to be Pinksofoxy). Take it from someone who has been in that same place of struggling with purchasing habits, and grinding to pay off those loans. The freedom of getting rid of that monthly ball and chain is so worth saying no to the 95% of things you won't even remember you said no to spending your money on. I promise. Your future self will not regret it and will be so grateful to your current self for delaying gratification to be done with it. It's not a mainstream thing to accomplish... yet. But the more of us that finish that goal, the more it will be normalized for others to persevere in hope and confidence that they'll get that freedom back too.

0min - 0.22min: Literally NO. 😂😂 I never only had one item of each like one blush, one mascara etc. and being able to put it all into one makeup bag 😂 But that's because I've always been a fan of makeup creativity and not so much of natural looks so I always had multiple colors of eyeshadow, lipstick and so on from the get go. 😄 I had a huge collection and downsized it gradually. I've just decluttered a lot of items literally 3 days ago which felt really good. There were so many pieces I don't like, don't use, "grew out of" so there's no point in keeping it. I still have products I don't really need in my collection, but now I only have one drawer of makeup and not many as I used to (the drawer is quite big and deep tho but I'm fine with it). Working on decluttering it further and further until I only have the products that really make me happy! Great video!

i would have absolutely loved this video, but gave it a dislike because everything is sped up and i feel like i'm just listening to music and not "getting any content" to watch. Could you maybe consider uploading the same video but not sped up at all?

Yes! I used to keep all my makeup on the bathroom counter or in the medicine cabinet. I had a foundation, blush, eye shadow quad & mascara. Boom. And I would hit pan then repurchase the exact same shade. Now I have a rolling drawer thing holding my collection. Ridiculous.

that was nice effort and could possibly do another one in the future. i dont know when you have time to wear all this :D
did a big clutter as well in summer. went from a full vanity table to a palm-sized makeup bag with 10 products in. havent missed what i decluttered even for a second and i actually dont even remember what i had :D

I’ve done a lot of decluttering for makeup. I think I’ve done pretty good job. It’s hard to declutter when you get emotionally attached but I wasn’t using foundations or even my tinted moisturizer anymore! I was only really reaching for the glossier stretch concealer cause I have really textured skin under my eyes and I just felt like everything emphasizes my dry texture. I don’t own a lot of makeup to begin with so I felt safe keeping all my blushes or colored makeup like eyeshadow cause I do use them all. The only eyeshadow I kept that I don’t use is this cool vintage covergirl one from the 1980s (I don’t wear it lol) but that’s really the only one that I didn’t use that I kept. I just felt like it was too cool to just toss especially since they don’t make it anymore!
