I discovered Halley Wars for the Game Gear when I was in high school and what immediately drew me in was the triumphant, almost Star Wars-like music. I never fully understood what that percentage bar at the bottom was but now that you say it has to do with the aliens getting past you now that makes sense. I thought the game was an exclusive Japanese release for Game Gear until one day I was poking around MAME and saw Halley's Comet and realized, "Ohhhh, this is the original game and GG was a port." I never played the FDS version so I may give that a shot one day just to feel out the differences. 😀
It says all you need to know that now it'll only take 2 months to cover 3+ years of the system (mostly 1989/1990). Past 1988 it really fell off quickly. This game's interesting, it could use some polish and more stuff though for sure.
I first discovered Halley Wars through the Game Gear port as a kid, so this probably distort my judgement, but it remains my favorite version of the game. The smaller screen space compressing the action makes it more frenetic than the leisurely paced (by modern shmup standards) arcade and home versions.
I was just 5 when Halley's Comet returned in 1986. Sadly, with no telescope, I did not actually see it pass over us. I remember the Challenger blowing up better than Halley's Comet. Mostly I just remember people TALKING about the comet. I really hope I live long enough to see it again in the 2060s. This is a game that I admit I did not know about, and considering how obscure it was, I guess that makes sense. What an oddly retro game for the mid-80s. Kind of perfect fodder for a late Disk System release.
Yeah, I suspect a lot of viewers of this channel were the right age to see (more or less) Halley's Comet as kids in 1986, and might even live to see it a second time.
Huh, so there's a second shmup where letting enemies slip past you increases a damage gauge that incurs an instant Game Over if maxed out, the other one I'm aware of (and that might have done it first) being Sega's SDI (also known as Global Defense on the Master System overseas).
I remember the sudden dip in quality that happened with the Famicom's cartridge games throughout 1989, and I can't imagine this series doing much better. Here's hoping we get some hidden gems from Tokuma Shoten and Ninty at least ;o
Not that many games left, so I feel like we won't be seeing many hidden gems at this point; mostly Disk Writer re-releases and perhaps a couple interesting experimental games here and there.
I believe Rndstranger mentioned across a few videos that he used to be a (game?) developer in Japan about two decades ago before going back to the US so he’s definitely Gen X.
I think I vaguely heard of this one? might've been the game gear version most likely. seems like an okayish shmup, even if it never reaches the levels of zanac or gradius.
I think "okayish shmup" about sums it up: it's fine. It's got that percentage gimmick, but beyond that it's a game that would have been more notable circa Star Force or Star Soldier, but really needs some more interesting environments or enemies or something to elevate it above middle of the road shooter.

1989 should be interesting since Nintendo isn’t giving up with making games for this format just yet. So long, Taito.

Oh that's funny I actually thought this was a Game Gear exclusive. That version was pretty fun from what I played of it.

For such a flashy game Halley Wars is pretty much the best Taito offering for FDS 😊
I really like Halley’s Comet so I may want to try this even if it doesn’t look like the greatest this ever
I wonder how this would have been received if it was a famicom launch title
Hehe... Buttun :)
Knew this on SGG, didn’t know there was an Arcade or FDS version

@6:08 - You certainly don't sound *that* old in these vids.
