While I'm no lore expert, I think the dark around Riven's eyes (the girl fighting in the arena) is just warpaint. Funnily enough she was one of my mains way back when I played the game but I never bothered going deep into her backstory so I'm assuming based on the little I know
I was also once a Riven main (still occasionally play, love showing off the original Season 2 Championship Riven skin). If I remember correctly she was once a prodigal soldier in the Noxian military who didn't realize just how evil Noxus as a whole really was until seeing Singed in action with all his alchemical weapons being used on friend and foe alike, killing most of her squad. After that, she defected from Noxus and now fights against them in Ionia. As for the black, it's definitely a warpaint.
