people forget that it is an award for the BEST animated film, not the best animated film
suited for kids. I fear people have transformed animation into 'the kiddie category'

I haven't seen Zootopia and I loved Kubo a lot but the world probably needs more Zootopia right now so I'd be totally okay if Kubo got best vfx and Zootopia got best animated.

Is it me or does Disney keep cheating their ways to The Oscars.

I so wanted to win. But it didn’t it because “Not Disney.” Man, this makes me once again mad about how Lego Movie got super snubbed for Big Hero 6, which was a good flick, but Oscar-worthy? No. I think they went with Zootopia due to relevance, but I think relevance doesn’t help a movie over time. For example, a film like Avatar was acclaimed for its VFX, but now is constantly teased for its environmental message, and cliches. Shamalayan’s Signs is another example. Films need to tell stories that become timeless, and while I think Zootopia is truly one of the best animated films I saw all of 2016, Kubo was far more outreaching. It was a story of death, and how we survive through memories. It was about how love is something so human, and why the main character Kubo would rather chose humanity over immortality. Either way, I think that part of is also that half of the Academy voters have watched none of the animated films (trust me on this), and vote based on title or company behind it. Either way, maybe what animated fans should do is just make our own Animation voting thing or something, because it always makes me mad when animated is sort of under-appreciated.

Yes, Kubo has wonderful animation. Ma vie de courgette and Red Turtle though were, to me, the best movies of the category.
Still, I would have preferred Kubo over Zootopia.
