  • Hope you enjoy this recap of my walk over the Tararua ranges! It was day 56-60 of walking the length of NZ along the Te Araroa trail for gynaecological cancer.

Excellent video. Te Matawai hut to Waitawaewae hut in a day is a pretty decent feat, especially considering the conditions of the Tararua's. There's something you're probably not going to want to hear though. The so called DOC "emergency access" is a bizzare and literally pointless detour. From the Otaki forks down to the new carpark (since the slip 3 years ago) it takes about 45 minutes. Contrast this with the 2 or maybe 3 hours of hands and knees scrambling over the emergency access and you'll be a bit miffed. What's worse is the 45 minute walk (which used to be the old gravel road prior the slip) has THE BEST MAINTENANCE of any track in the Tararua's by far with timber steps, ropes to assist you and timber sidings even for a bit of extra safety. Please spread the word to anyone exiting the ranges at Otaki forks to ignore the "emergency access" rubbish....that was tough enough for me to hear even the briefest mention that you used it!
