    Hi Eric, I was just looking back thru things and stumbled on this still relevant video. I could save a lot of money by living in a van even 2 years. I'm glad you did this one especially because I haven't heard any others talk about how important it is to have a savings. And I'd add it's important to have one when first going on the road. Glad you are still out there and loving life. Jax too. :-)

    Interesting update. Slightly more expensive that what I'd have guessed, but still cheaper than paying off a mortgage and being shackled to a job you hate. And you keep your freedom and pursue your passion. Also, I am impressed that you manage to post daily with consistency. As I am now discovering myself, this is a full time job! Did you consider driving across Canada? I will be driving across the good USA (Route 66, Chicago to LA and BACK) in June, so who knows, maybe our paths will cross, that’d be awesome!

    Everytime I enjoy watching your channel.
    I live in Japan and my car is a minivan. I make my van as a campervan.
    Your life is exactly what I want to do! But now I am a nurse,I can't take long off .
    But someday I am going to travel with my cat named Ume in Japan like you do!
    Big differences between the States and Japan are that gas is much more expensive and every time I use high way,it costs! There is no freeway in Japan.
    Anyway I can learn a lot to complete my van!

    Hi Eric - I started binge-watching your videos about a week ago and have already watched over 300. The RV/van life, combined with your friendly and relatable manner and the editing/production make it hard for me to step away from the computer. The final (and killer) secret ingredient is Jax. I have little hope of getting anything else done until I'm up to date on all your videos. Dammit Eric, I hold you personally responsible!
    The van is SWEET. I like the fact that the coach/house side of things (or whatever you call it) is simpler, so you're much less likely to have as many issues as you had with Tilly. I'm thinking specifically of the dry rot problem, and the roof leak issues you had with her. I don't know much about these types of things, but it strikes me that the main thing you have to be concerned with in the van will be the engine, drivetrain, and related parts. Less to worry about. Nice!
    Your budget is interesting - thank you for sharing it. It might be useful to include a few extra categories, such as laundry, occasional clothing expenses etc. Then there are things like admission fees to tourist attractions, and buying fun stuff (like the Nascar sign). I know they're not all directly a part of the cost of living in a van, but it could be useful to see how much you spend in different categories every month (on average). Hey - perhaps you have already accounted for these expenditures, but don't feel like sharing them with us. I wouldn't blame you - you already share a lot as it is, for which I'm very grateful.
    Anyway - back to binge-watching. I'm really looking forward to watching the last couple of hundred videos or so. That way, I can get back to my normal life, and just watch the latest Nomadic Fanatic video when I get a notification, instead of sitting in front of the computer for 8, 10 or even 12 hours a day. Yeah, seriously. I'm weird like that. It's an INTJ thing (I think!)
    Big ups (or whatever the kids say),
    Dave
    Oakland, CA

      keep in mind some of his videos showing places he visits include bars, and booze on the town is higher than getting one out of your fridge. And 180 / 30 days = 6 bucks a day...

      @turningwrenches7867 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      $180 a month for alcohol sounds reasonable to me. $6 a day is only 2 beers up here. Nothing wrong with having a beer or two after a hard day. Kick back and relax is the way to do it. Eric's doing just fine.

    @pieter1102 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A great overview of what it costs you to live in the van. I liked your explanations. You can hear exactly the kind of comments you have had after previous similar videos. But I agree - this is what it costs you. Someone else might be different.
    What you cannot do is multiply this by 12 and get you annual costs to live. Taxes, medical, clothes replacement, van registration, insurance, (regular) maintenance. There is a whole list of predictable costs like that not included in your budget. And your savings have to cover a lot more than just the van: replacing your laptop or any of the other stuff you have is one item line there. $250 a month is certainly not too much to cover that.
    $180 for booze a months is $6 a day. Put it like that and it certainly does not sound so high. Same for your food. That is not a high budget for food, especially when you go out regularly.
    Keep on living the van life.

    We have a $1500 for both of us in our Truck camper, but thats everything for us. We run under budget, but then there is always something that comes up. We also drive a lot more and gas is way more down here. We have a healthy beer budget :) We used to spend $1500 just on rent living in Maui, Hawaii.

    I'm working now on getting ready to live in a van next year. I'm setting up some affiliate marketing with blogs. I don't want to do TH-cam. I'll probably end up with about what you spend as what I have every month. I don't drink, don't have a cat, don't need so much internet, so I think I can do pretty well on $1200 a month. I've had to eat on $134 a month once when I was really broke, so I know I can do that if I have to. I like your videos. Please keep doing them.

    $80.00 a month on Jax? That's not too bad. I wouldn't count that as what it costs to live in a van because that expense would be there regardless of where you live. Plus I don't consider pet expenses as a living expense.

  • @bocamax
    @bocamax 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's great to see you setting aside $250/month for maintenance & repairs. From an income point of view, FICA + Medicare is 15.3% for self employed. At minimum, you should be saving 10%-20% of gross income toward retirement. There are also Federal & State Income Taxes, Gifts (Christmas, Birthdays), Attractions (Jack Daniels Tour), Clothes, Computer, AAA roadside service plan, etc. From an income point of view with retirement savings,health insurance, taxes, etc, I think the income needed would be closer to $2,500 in monthly income.

  •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Actually, You are spending almost the same thing than last year. If you take into account that gas is now cheaper and that you don't have 2 vehicules, plus the savings account, and the internet (a little more expensive), you're down to around 800$ per month. Not bad!

    First off Eric, I want to say that I love the videos. I just found your channel and I have been binge watching this weekend, catching up. $1,237 is a decent living budget. It costs me about the same to buy a house and live here in the house and I work full time and do side gigs. I hope this isn't rude to ask, I'm just really curious. Now that you have almost 100,000 subscribers, how much do you make annually just sharing your life story with everyone here on TH-cam?

    Gee better send this video to my fiancé so she will agree to a van to go around Australia for a year. Currently paying $700 per week just to live. That's not including car registration and car insurance which is $1800 per year. Spending around $180 per week on food. America must have really cheap food. How much would it cost to deck the van out from scratch? Would need a on demand camping shower though. Keep the updates coming.

    • @rmbarnes672
      @rmbarnes672 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cory Boris interesting you say sir. America does have cheap food, probably one reason why so many of us are fat)). But everything else is all over the map cost wise. Insurance, state fees for you name it, rent or mortgage costs, and pray you don't need medical care without insurance. There's no way to even average it across the board.
      I can really only add this and I hope others that know better will chime in: as far as how "decked out" you as a couple want it, you could throw a bed and an ice chest in the van and call it a done day. Or head for the sky $ wise.
      Look at all the other van channels too (for example RubberTrampsReviews) and research and read. IOW good luck. Your plan sounds cool Cory.

    Are you able to watch TH-cam & movies? I know your hotspot uses 30G a month & you save that for your uploads. I imagine you'd need a lot of internet for Netflix and other online entertainment. Thx Nomad

    if you switch to a Galaxy phone its only $10 more on sprint to use that phone as the hotspot would slim down your devices and you would be able to share your phones data

    • @PalaVR
      @PalaVR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark McLaughlin That's how I have my internet set up - I use my Galaxy S5 as a hotspot when I don't have WiFi, and attach all my other household devices (another phone and 2 laptops) to it. But then all our Facebooking, comment reading and replying, watching TH-cam videos, etc. counts as data.
      I think Eric is smart like a fox for having one device with unlimited data for everyday use, and one device with a large but limited data cap as a dedicated video uploading device. If I weren't so heavily invested in Google's Play Store ecosystem, I might consider switching back to an iPhone (the last one I had was the 4)...

      We don't know the coverages that Eric has on his insurance. You can purchase State minimums or you can purchase the maximum amount of insurance you can get or somewhere in between. You can also choose to not insure the vehicle to help cut costs.
