John Wesley was the 18th century founder of the Methodist movement-a community of Christians who brought renewal to the church by practicing intentional discipleship and striving after the holiness of God. At the peak of his ministry, Wesley regularly traveled over 4,000 miles each year and preached some 40,000 sermons during his lifetime, helping lead people from all walks of life into powerful encounters with God. His doctrine was remarkably balanced and his spirituality rich. Is it appropriate to identify with the spiritual and theological tradition named after its founder? Doesn’t calling oneself “Wesleyan” result in division in the church?

RIP dear brother. You’re sorely missed. Isaiah 57:1-2.

My Northern Irish ancestors were Methodists as well. They gradually became Nazarene Wesleyans after coming over here.

I was amazed that no one made any comments on this talk. I wished I could have heard more from this fellow on John Wesley and his brother Charles. I would disagree with him about what we find today in the Methodist movement, especially in the United Methodist Church here in the states. That branch of Methodism is so far from primitive Methodism it would be a huge stretch to call what we have today Methodism. Other Methodist denominations such as the Free Methodists and others of that stream have cooled down and have lost some of their distinctive attributes as well.

Louis Accardi, I agree. This man has a really interesting story! I was raised in the United Methodist Church, and I remember our pastor (who himself was extremely conservative) being dismayed after returning from UMC conferences- he said everything was becoming very liberal and wishy-washy. It's been quite a while since I was in a Methodist Church, but I'd be willing to bet that trend hasn't reversed.

@@dreamer9127do try a Wesleyan church as they're more conservative and believe in inerrancy, and the biblical marriage, and holiness..

It would be more to the point if the emphasis was on the Lord Jesus Christ. My father was a Methodist lay preacher but was never bound by the traditions of denomination. Wesley himself preached Christ and Him crucified. He also preached a life of holiness or 'a heart of perfect love' as he sometimes referred to it. But Wesleyanism was not an end in itself to be promoted as a 'version' of Christianity. Sadly. the Wesleyan message of a life of holiness (as taught in the Scriptues) has for the most part, been abandoned and worse still (if that is possible), so has the clear message of the need for repentance and the new birth. Present leanings towards unscriptural lifestyles come under God's condemnation and will result in an even greater decline. Without God's blessing it will go nowhere!

Progressive Christianity affirming 'wesleyans in name only ' don't speak for all wesleyans and wesleyan arminian emphasis..
I'm Wesleyan arminian emphasis, affirm inerrancy, biblical marriage and holiness in heart and life.
I also don't attend a united Methodist Church, but I have found a place in the Wesleyan Church..
