Yeah I agree, I always liked Self Control, that's an obvious, famous classic, and her cover of Power of Love has always been a favorite (I always preferred it over Jennifer Rush's version). But only after I 'rediscovered' Self Control in my adulthood, did I truly realize the greatness that was Laura Branigan. Ti Amo for example, is a wonderful performance, as is Living a Lie. It's like her voice in these songs suddenly became better and different in my adulthood. It's like there was hidden magic all along in her voice and only with an adult mind could I really understand her quality. Unbelievable.

You could see it in her eyes. Looked like she was very sensitive to light and flinched and squinted quite a lot.And her pupils were dilated even in low light. Migraines can be debilitating
When that happened I got chills. She was singing with such emotion and the audience responded by showing their love and appreciation. Her smile was from her heart. Just a beautiful moment.

The best singer I've heard from back than, and still the best today. There was no autotune back than, Lauras voice was real, and genuine, how could she sing so beautifully, the concerts I've attended, still keep me excited, I seen a real beautiful lady, with a voice not matched back than, or today. This autotune can make me sound good, sad, all artists use fake music at concerts today.
Powerful, Passionate singing, charismatic stage presence and drop dead gorgeous looks. She was a complete package. Will never tire of listening to her voice. "Only the good die young"
Since people are doing it here (comparing her to the Titanic lady), Laura Branigan was authentic. You believed her, she was true to her music, and you could feel it. She picked up steam and injected that energy into the song as it went on, not phony pseudo build up but real intensity of purpose. Power. Will. She'd finish the song stronger than she started it. Branigan was honest. Some of her songs can be rather haunting. The tones slow, almost tragic. This song, and, for me at least, 'Forever Young' are difficult for me to watch even today. It's as if seeing her again brings it all back. That nerve her singing touched in many of us gets pinged 30 years later proving it wasn't a fluke. She is vulnerable as she tries to reach us. Yet she does it, she put it out there and wanted us to feel something. Dal mio cuore. She preferred to sing sad songs as was her nature, but she loved songs like 'Power Of Love' with its difficult lyrics and vocal gymnastics it demanded of her to yield the product she knew people would 'really' hear. If she could do all of that for us then I can return the favor and enjoy her performance. People remembered and loved her style on stage. She was so unpolished and real. She was a puncher. Not slick, not pretty in pink but a song bird who could have been the kid down the block. I can't remember her name now, but an opera singer said Branigan was her favorite. She said when Branigan died she cried and couldn't stop. Eventually she did, of course. But she still feels the same way about Branigan. That's a large compliment. To her, Branigan was a natural. To her, that was the gift. I don't know when this video was made. Here she is lean, dressed like a normal person and not the 'gone Hollywood' star. The large hair of the era toned down. Her movements are not canned but real. She appears apprehensive as she sings the opening lyrics. Trust me, they're hard marks to hit. It's hard work and she's working hard up on stage. You can see her light up at 1:01 when the audience cheers her singing. After that she's off to the races. At around the 3:03 mark you can see her interpretation reach its climax. Full steam ahead. Her voice is cracking a bit as she takes it out of its range some, but her inner will forces her to hit the notes. I look at this today, a video from maybe 20 plus years ago and far from the blinders we all had from 'living in the now', and I see maybe for the first time what a great talent she was. I believed her when she says 'she's my lady' and 'I'm her man'. Someone said that before she died her career was pretty much over, just like so many 'pop' singers. The critic compared her purloined and tragic end and talent similar to Mario Lanza. I don't know about that but her death took away someone who had the gift, the talent and the will to make us believe in her, and by doing so believe in ourselves. She was 'ours'.
sardu55, I knew Laurie, that's what she liked for me to call her. She called me Scotty, the only person in my life to call me that. She was a real down to earth, sweet and classy Lady. She really cared about people. There's no one on this earth than can or ever will replace her. She was that one in a more than a million. Laurie could reach you with her singing and make you feel what she was feeling. She put so much emotion, passion and love into every song. In person, she was as beautiful inside as she was outside and a real loving human being. We talked often, to hear her voice on the phone, it was so soft and warm. Her personality was awesome. She was witty, funny and very smart. We had a little inside joke if you can call it that, that went on for a while. One day she called me and I said "You're my favorite Yankee" she laughed and said "No, I'm your favorite Irish." I will never ever forget Laurie and her friendship to me. Rest In Peace Laurie. We all miss you.
Wow, that was quite a live performance. So beautiful it made me shed a few tears. Man, I miss the 1980s. I realize this live performance was probably recorded in the 90s or maybe 2000s, because Laura looked a bit older here, but it's such a tragedy that she died that early. Not the best singer I've heard, but she was really a great talent and such a beautiful voice. We need more music like this today, and not the autotunes fast food we've been getting the past 20 years.
@@ftjax I like the Jennifer Rush version too, great song, but Laura Branigan completely outperformed Jennifer Rush, just like she outperformed Raf with her cover of his Self Control. Laura Branigan is one of the 80s greats, and much like Pat Benatar and especially Robin Beck, underrated. Jennifer Rush has a very different voice and a great singer in her own right, but Rush was definitely not on par with Laura Branigan. By the way, if you like Jennifer Rush, check out her song Credo. Great stuff.
@@EliasAlucard check out you tube had a comparison of Celine Dion version & Jennifer Rush & the consensus was Rush over Dion . I guess it's just a matter of preference, by the way I just heard Celine & Peabo Bryson sing 1994 of Beauty and the Beast and I'm not ashamed to say my 80 yr old tears were flowing like rain
Voz potente, linda cantora , interpretação magnífica vem do fundo da alma! Descanse em Paz Laura! Nestes tempos conturbados e decadentes você ainda transmite O Poder do Amor!
Laura believed that singing was also acting and really delving the emotions the song portrays. You can ALWAYS feel that in her music and live performances. She is so fully invested in the emotive experience of the music.
I was 8 or 9 when 'Gloria' hit the radio. I remember her guest starring role on CHIPS. She was my first celebrity crush. Her voice was so powerful and emotive, and this is by far my favorite version of this song.
No dancers. No ridiculous amounts of makeup. No auto tune. Just her natural beauty and angelic voice.

I'm so glad to hear from her friends/fans who actually knew her. To have you reveal the sweet lady behind the star persona is so so gratifying.
Excellent
Great comment. Thumbs up!
Celine Dion is over rated and a horrible person.
Laura is pure and genuine
Nunca habrá otra voz como la de Laura. RIP Laura

🌹❤️🥺🥺Lady Laura Branigan
Wow, that was quite a live performance. So beautiful it made me shed a few tears. Man, I miss the 1980s. I realize this live performance was probably recorded in the 90s or maybe 2000s, because Laura looked a bit older here, but it's such a tragedy that she died that early. Not the best singer I've heard, but she was really a great talent and such a beautiful voice. We need more music like this today, and not the autotunes fast food we've been getting the past 20 years.
Jennifer Rush wrote power of love. I prefer that version. she had it all
@@ftjax I like the Jennifer Rush version too, great song, but Laura Branigan completely outperformed Jennifer Rush, just like she outperformed Raf with her cover of his Self Control.
There's nothing like 1990s and 1980s weekend nights on TV watching such a remarkable voice while reading a book on the couch.. Gosh i miss this era..
Even SHES OLD even death I still admired and dream her always at the stage!!! I Love LAURA BRANIGA deep inside my Heart

My God such a powerful voice. I miss you terrible Laura Branigan.
Que mujer. Más. Simple hermosa y buena voz que paso que ya no salen artistas así solo recordar el pasado y escuchar la buena musica
Жаль рано ушла. Так и хочется слушать и слушать Лауру до бесконечности.

Can't believe that this beautiful soul is no more. RIP Laura you will always be remembered.
What made her amazing was her voice seemed on the edge of breaking and yet it didn’t - pure emotion
what a voice, what a voice, angels belong in heaven and that's why she got called so young.
🥺🫂
I finally got around to watching Miami Vice and heard “Self Control” the other day I have been wearing out these videos of hers ever since.
If only you can read my message now Laura, my new truck carries your name. I named her Laura. Branigan for ever. ❤
Fuiste única con tu gran voz Laura Branigan descansa en paz 🎤🎵🙏
3:57 Confirmation that she not only had the looks but pure talent. Forever Laura.
I was 8 or 9 when 'Gloria' hit the radio. I remember her guest starring role on CHIPS. She was my first celebrity crush. Her voice was so powerful and emotive, and this is by far my favorite version of this song.
