    This album was in the peak period for the band. They began a flirtation with prog rock blending it with their hard rock on Vol 4 and definitely on Sabotage. Not a bad song on any of their first six albums.

    The song is about a man's decent into megalomania. The song starts off slow and vulnerable, like someone desperately trying to cling on to their sanity.
    Then that evil riff kicks in. Hes sounding more demonic. He's losing his battle to keep his sanity. Then he thinks hes coming back "well i think somethings giving me a chance to return, its giving me the chance of saving my soul. Pictures of demigod (the megalomania) are slipping away, im going backwards but im in control...
    Feel. It. Slipping away..."
    The second half of the song is him slipping in and out of megalomania.

    A couple of interesting small extra points: One is that you noticed the double exposure photo, which on the album cover is actually a mirror, so there are two images of each of them with two faces in the mirror (get it?) :) The other thing is you were so astute as to mention "self-sabotage", which is the album title; "Sabotage"! You pick up on all of these little details so well! I love it! Black Sabbath is definitely metal, and in fact Tony Iommi invented it. Lots of variations, though.

    So the effect on Tony's guitar during the solo is either a phaser or a univibe, not sure which. Either one used with distortion produces a sort of "psychedelic" swirling effect. Megalomania, and Sabotage as a whole, is some of the finest music ever made IMO.

    Great job, Randi! This was vey entertaining just like all of you insightful reactions! Yes, this is about someone struggling to get free of their insanity (their megalomania (delusions of grandeur) and schizophrenia), and finally succeeding and becoming free. It's my understanding that the other lower voice ("Sting me", etc.), is the other personality. Notice at the end when that break comes, and he uses the word "Free, there is no lower other voice, only his.

    Black Sabbath INVENTED Heavy Metal!!!!! Don't be mistaken by what some people might say, there was Hard Rock (Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones) but when Sabbath came along nobody had heard anything so heavy. Their first album is where it all started, listen to Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath and you'll hear how Heavy Metal first came about. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    It isn't often I get to hear something from Sabbath for the first time. I Sure did today It's as if I've just been flooded in a hidden side of the band that I never knew existed. It was so different from anything else from them I've heard before. What really mad it for me was the intensity growing in steps throughout, the multi layering of the guitar, and the varying style that Tony played with. Ay one point I actually thought I heard Richie Blackmore taking the lead.
    Then there the altering feelings that were enhanced as the music grew. To begin with, it might have been Strate out of my diary, very low, oppressive and heavy depression. Show an introverted self loathing person that cannot be comfortable un being out of sight and very alone. And as the tones rose, so did the feelings, Like getting stoned on some green, and going down the avenue of seeking harder drugs to improve the levels of illusional happiness, then chasing that next fix to avoid going back to square one. And all the time, doing more harm than good.
    Yet as with al things Sabbath, I loved it.
    Be well. TTFN.

    Black Sabbath was just a band who played what they liked. At the time, they really didn't hamper themselves by retaining a genre per se, but as time evolved, people refer to them as the creators of Heavy Metal. So, you might say, if they were to be any genre at all, it would be Heavy Metal.

  • @Respecttheriff
    @Respecttheriff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Megalomania is the obsession with the exercise of power, especially in the domination of others. The song context is probably referring to a drugs power and authority over it's user. In the song, the lyrics speak about the obsession with the drug. "How could this poison be the dream of my soul"...While there may also be a mixture of power plays and authoritarian ideas inside the song, as the band was going through an intense court battle with previous management during the time too (The Writ on this album devoted solely to that). The lyrics depict a battle where the user fights back to regain self control and happiness away from addiction.

    • @mikeg.4211
      @mikeg.4211 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest that this is a straight up description of a battle with schizophrenia, which is reflected (no pun intended) by the dual personalities shown on the album cover, and is also directly referenced in the song with "I'm really digging schizophrenia..."; and "no sympathizing God, it's insanity". I don't think any of this is metaphorical, which Butler's lyrics virtually never were.

Black Sabbath were an English rock / heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, UK & pioneers of heavy metal music ... they were classed as one of "The Unholy Trinity" of British hard rock/metal bands, the other two being Led Zeppelin & Deep Purple ... Did you ever watch the US series "The Osborne's" with a camera crew following Ozzy, Sharon & the kids ... filmed at their Beverly Hills home ... you could try reacting to Zeppelin & Deep Purple, you might enjoy them ... great reaction as always 👍

      I saw a few minutes of the Osborne's show once. It was on TV when I was flipping through the channels years ago. I don't remember it so I probably didn't watch much of it. The most personal understanding I have of the family is from some ABC special years ago, where they talked about Sharon's eating disorder. That was probably 20+ years ago when I watched that and I couldn't tell you what they said in the special. 🤦‍♀️
