Unfortunately one has got to turn to the music of one's teens and early manhood to get real Rock. Not saying that there's no Rock at all, but the decline is perceivable. Probably there are some other genres breaking the ice these days.
I honestly think this dirtier style is more suited to him than the sort of style he uses when he plays with RHCP. And that's sort of the reason why his playing can get a little weird on stage, as he'll mix the two a bit and make some weird ass noises with his pedals when soloing that would sound great in this sort of style, but sound a bit weird with RHCPs style.
