The UK Exits Coal Power, Ushering in Era of Renewables

On the night of Monday 30th September 2024, the UK’s last coal power plant, Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar, closed its doors for the final time, marking a historic end to coal-generated electricity in the country that spearheaded the Industrial Revolution.
In just over a decade, the UK-the world’s sixth-largest economy-has gone from burning coal to generate 40% of its electricity to none at all, while power generation from burning fossil gas was lower in 2023 than it was in 2012. This success stems from a surge in wind power, proving that countries can eliminate coal without turning to fossil gas.
