I went on holiday in SA back in late 2019, just before Covid. Really beautiful country, friendly people, interesting sights. Wonderful place, in a lot of ways. But the government is corrupt, has systematically looted the coffers for decades, and many people are poor. The shops are full of nice consumer junk that no one can afford. Reminds me a bit of a line from that old Eddy Grant song, "Working so hard, like a soldier. Can't afford a thing on TV." It doesn't make a shit difference if a recession happens next year, it needs to happen *after* the midterm election. There are plenty of president who had to deal with a recession within 2 years but still got re-elected. In fact Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan got re-elected with a landslide. Obama had also a recession in his first year, the thing they all have in commen is that a recession didn't occur 2 years before the presidential election.
It's a different scenario if the incumbent can't or doesn't want to run for re-election. A good example is the 2000 or 2016 the election, a recession is in that case not necessary, an incumbent party needs to suffer a scandal (impeachment and for that you need to have at least the house) and in combination a foreign military failure in order to dislodge an incumbent party from the Whitehouse or at least no military success.
Tell this to every other person, because this will determine who will win the 2024 election. Nothing else will make a damn difference.

I went on holiday in SA back in late 2019, just before Covid. Really beautiful country, friendly people, interesting sights. Wonderful place, in a lot of ways. But the government is corrupt, has systematically looted the coffers for decades, and many people are poor. The shops are full of nice consumer junk that no one can afford. Reminds me a bit of a line from that old Eddy Grant song, "Working so hard, like a soldier. Can't afford a thing on TV." If you show people things, again and again, that they can't have, eventually they will take them.

I am living in the middle of this. Thank god for the security companies and every day citizens that are barricading areas to stop them hurting us. The police cannot cope, the army is no where in sight to help us trapped in the middle of it all. We hearing the chaos all day and night.
