I was about 18yrs old, I'm now 60, when I headed up to the upper pasture to get one of my horses Lady. As I called her in, I notice she was injured. I called my Dad to let him know he needed to call Doc Prentise, to come fix her up. He said to me, do you have the money to pay the DR? I said No! His response was, you know enough(I was headed to vet school the next fall), stitch her up. So i did. Best thing my Dad could've done for me🤠
Jim hi good vet work , friend . I had Lady Dog cancer on same side of vagina . Taken off same way heeled So well ,... you couldn't even Tell . Thanks .
Thank God for large animal vets. Everyone likes to take care of cuddly cats and dogs, but wading around in manure dealing with cows and horses not so much
I hope poor Earl does not have to go through this again. It all went out pretty smooth but he is going to feel a bit uncomfortable for a few days. Can’t wait to hear biopsy results and hopefully it’s all clear from here on. He is a lucky little horse to have you taking care of him. Don’t think he would be so lucky at his previous owner.
Earl's a real good boy staying still through that procedure. It shows how much he trusts you, and your vet. Best wishes for Earl's speedy recovery and unremarkable biopsy.
It was a wonderful video Jim and I am so glad that we got to watch it all and that it all went well. That sweet little "Vet" is a jewel and they are hard to find! And your sweet wife is very special also!
Earl is a real good patient, I watched and I'm not afraid to say with tears in my eyes. Jim you have a good vet and neighbor, she was wonderful. Earl all the best to you young horse, it will be better now in the END. 👍👍👏👏✌✌❤
The trust that your horses have with you is a joy to watch. That was nice to see you make Earl go back into the crush and back out properly " do it right" Hope Earl heals quickly and thank you for another informative video.
@@jimcour291 Yes ofc, and if I dont agree with this particular vet, I automatically dont know anything about my animals. It was really messy and painful for the horse and she didnt even get it all out. A rerun of this procedure will be needed.
Good job by all! Those lidocaine shots are not easy no matter who gets them or where they are going... stick, sting ouch ouch owwww!!! He handled it better than expected. Glad your dog didn't eat your homework. If the vet hadn't brought her stuff closer, it might have gone missing. Too funny. Lot of respect for you. Returning our patient to the operating room likely wasn't what you horse had in mind but glad he went. Regardless of the circumstances, he needs to know that there is only 1 acceptable way to exit. No cheating, not even once. Well done.
It seems Earl has been somewhat of a challenge since you brought him home. Your patience and attention seems to have payed off. I truly believe he is going to end up being one of your finest work horses. Really enjoy your videos please keep them coming. As usual my regards to Mrs. Brenda and the girls.
Was watching the video when vet removed tumor good work vet and earl was very good good job vet and earl nice looking colt wish you well earl you will be fine
She knows her stuff and so do Jim putting him back in you. Are very lucky to a vet that close here north new Brunswick Canada we have no vet at we are on our own thanks for the video
Was a large animal Vet Assistant in the late 70's boy does this bring back memories... And they weren't all good one's either! Tough tough job... Not for the faint of heart that's for sure! Thank God for Veterinarians. I pray he is cleared..
HA! My first thought on seeing the dog was, "The dog ate my homework." The needle was harder to watch than the surgery. Good on you taking "Houdini Earl" back in the stock although he probably would have gone in all the way if you stayed by his head. Give him a little praise and a head rub reward and have him stand a minute before backing him out. Wish l was near you to lend a helping hand. Thanks for showing this. Stay safe.
Earl did GREAT. I thought that Earl might get a fear of the shoeing stocks after that. I see that you made him exit the stocks correctly. I can see that is important. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching us about horses and training them. God Bless!! 🙏
He did really well! He's much better than most horses. Thank you for sharing Jim. I hope the pathology comes back good. He's in good hands with you monitoring him💙
I remember helping my Dad. He was a large animal vet in upstate NY around the Finger Lakes...mostly dairy cows. Had forgotten about helping with the iodine wipe downs.
Man, I used to have a cast iron stomach for this stuff. I've helped with many a similar procedure, and once had to help clean up after a stallion fight in which one of the participants nearly bled to death. I don't know whether it is just so long since I've helped with one, or whether it is because I'm fasting, but this one got me. Maybe it is because its such a tender and dangerous area. Glad to see he was able to "pull himself together" afterwards. Acepromazine can do nasty things to a colt. I guess she dosed him lightly for that reason, and that's why he started to wake up before she was done. Dosing can be tricky even for equine specialists. Good job making him do it over correctly. Rascal.
Hope the mass comes back benign, I've got a good feeling it will be. Glad you made him go back in the stocks & back out properly. No short-cuts even if he is sedated. Thanks for taking us along Earl's journey.
Even after surgery you insisted that the colt doesn't get away with leaving the shoeing stock the wrong way, however cute that may be. This kind of consistency is a big part of your success with horses. Hopefully the tumor won't come back.
Nice job, and the re-exit, nice job Earl. I would recommend wearing gloves while preping especially dealing with a wart. Virus. Then switch to sterile gloves, blue then white. Nice to have a vet next door. Interesting video from a guy that spent alot of time working in surgery. Thanks for sharing.
Also a card table to get up and another flat surface to set things down. Up above the grown level. Good job though. The vet has some nice supplies and a nice effort to stay as clean as possible.
Poor Earl. I've been dreading this surgery on him ever since the vet said it needed to come off.😪 Even though he had local anesthesia, getting the needle sticks to administer the anesthesia was so painful. Then it was wearing off as she sewed him up and it hurt the baby boy.😪 I would make a terrible veterinarian or medical doctor. Can't handle seeing a person or animal in pain. I'm praying Earl heals beautifully and doesn't have any complications.🤗 Extra love pats and face scratches for sweet Earl please!
Sorry can't watch him get cut. I'm a sis glad there's folks that can do that stuff. Hope he's fine- what a great looking horse. Take care and sorry about not being able to watch
I let the video play but, i did not watch it. If someone is hurt bad and no body else is around i am ok but, as soon as I get somewhere where someone else can take over i have sit down right away or risk falling down.
Brenda is a hypnotist 😂 I played this soon after arriving back home from a long day at work subbing for the art teacher, today's classes being all young elementary special needs students, many nonverbal, with physical intellectual and dexterity challenges, i.e. very slow-paced; and it rained all day to boot. Both made me very sleepy. Listened to Brenda tell Earl, "You are getting very sleepy..." And it about put me straight to sleep sitting up in my computer chair 😂 my head was drooping, my eyelids wouldn't stay open. I was holding the desk to keep from falling over 😂 But the surgery brought me back awake. I hope Earl heals quickly and that the biopsy brings good results.
Rough you tube day for me. Spent the day in the garden and after a bath I make a pizza, while listening to the Friesian Horses to learn that the leader of the herd lost her foal. Okay, let’s see what Jim us doing....um...Earl is getting his bump removed! Took some time off and now I know Earl is doing well after the Houdini event! Blessings to all and I hope that springtime is glorious!
This was really interesting, the good thing is his gender, a mare would relieve herself close to the incision/suture site, being a gelding it's easier to keep clean. I'm glad you made him redo exiting the chute the correct way instead of getting away with bad behavior. My current service dog would rush automatic doors, we would redo our exiting until she would exit calmly so her fearful behavior wasn't reinforced.
Hi again that was very interesting video I have seen lots of vet work being around horses and cattle done a lot of helping cows and sheep giving birth and done the odd bit of stitching but not as good as a vet stay safe
Hi Jim, oh my goodness what a big brave boy Earl was, I was sat watching through my fingers lol, it's better gone though isn't it, aw bless, now it's a waiting game, hopefully it's nothing but a sore memory, so what's his name now, (Earl Houdini) he did well, hugs to you all and a big sloppy kiss for the poorly boy, Earl you're a good boy X

I have a suggest. You have a wonderful place for the vet to work in. You should put a workbench for her stuff to sit on. It doesnt have to be high. Maybe table high and deep enough to put equipment long enough to spread stuff out.
Tell us your animal surgery stories!

Yes he is doing great.
His standing still might have a lot to do with the needle that he got at first to make him drowsy ;)
Also was great to have a nurse in the room for support and her kind words...
This vet showed more compassion than my local er showed me when I was delirious from blood poisoning
