  • Here are a couple of clips of my mistakes from autocross over the past three years driving my 1991 Toyota MR2. I know most of these videos aren't actually "snap oversteer", they are lift off over steer or throttle oversteer. / mr2_nate

    Do you find yourself braking during the turn? That is usually what causes it with a MR platform.
    Sometimes, even by letting go the acceleration dramatically; it will cause a shift in weight causing the rear to kick out

    • @mr2_nate
      @mr2_nate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The first four clips are just lift off oversteer, I lifted off the throttle mid corner. I've learned since then and never lift while turning, and I try to brake in a straight line. And the last two clips are throttle oversteer.

    • @rem362
      @rem362 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never driven a mr2 but i kind of have the same thoughts as you. It's seems to be pretty similar to riding a bike in a weird kind of sense. Rolling off the throttle abruptly mid corner on a bike or braking hard in the middle of a turn will result in a crash. On the mr2 it seems to results in a similar kind of desaster

    If you play a racing sim (iracing, assetto Corsa, project cars 2), with no anti lock brakes and a mid engine car, you'll learn very quickly to be paranoid of braking and turning haha

    • @rotorblade9508
      @rotorblade9508 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      any car you play is different so when you jump on a real car you’ll still have to learn how it behaves at the limit… imo you’ll still have to do braking while turning 🤷‍♂️

    • @frederickschulze8014
      @frederickschulze8014 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rotorblade9508 Yeah, my point is that some people have no fear of it, especially if they drive a car with a heavy frontal weight bias. They have always experienced understeer if they brake too hard into a corner. When I sim raced in project cars 2, I had to be very careful of braking/turning too much under corner entry with no ABS because the first warning was usually a full spin lol. I feel like this really helped me understand what to look for when I'm approaching the limit with my Porsche boxster. I've still spun once or twice trying to hit that limit :P. It's almost easier irl because you get so much extra feedback from noise/vibration/g forces, so I felt like I was relearning a bit but with some extra help.

    It looks to me like you're overcorrecting your oversteer. And you're accelarating after leaving a turn while also turning again at 1:45. Like you leave the turn there, and accelarate heavily while steering to the left. You'll lose grip rather quickly.

      Snap oversteer really isn’t as bad as the internet says it is. Most of the time it’s just driver error. But I probably wouldn’t recommend getting an MR2 as a first car. They have gotten pretty expensive and aren’t the most practical. Get something fun and fwd like a Honda Fit. And take it to an autocross event so you know how to control it at it’s limit.

    I found out while just driving around my roundabouts that you can use liftoff oversteer by either braking or lifting off the trottle in order to combat understeer. I have only snapped due to unclean surfaces and even me who just got their license was able to recover. I think this shows the differences between the AW11 platform and the SW20's severity of snap oversteer. But I believe both platforms can use it to be faster
