  • This is 1979 shovelhead with a tamer that was first installed in the 1980's. Original clutch basket. Tamer bottom plate worn so I flipped it over. I bought a new cluch hub to replace a five stud hub and new Alto fiber plate with new Barnett steel plates without anti rattle balls. The new Alto fiber plate's would not fit over the new clutch hub fingers and after drilling hole and extra 64'th (25/64). In this video i stated i only drilled one out an extra 64th per finger (stud) hole but even using an old 3 stud hub, I had to drill all the Alto plates and extra 64th per stud hole to get a smooth fit. I will also have to sand/ smooth each stud on old hub.

Cleaning the crap off those clutch fingers in the basket will go a long way to getting that clutch to work perfectly.

Need to friction plate in first then steel. Drill out open up holes for fingers of clutch hub to run through. Fit new hub old one is wore out.

I ended up fixing that rivit in the lose dog on the clutch basket by using a ball pean hammer on the head of the Rivit and it tightened it up like new. Did the same thing on the lose clutch hub fingers with a ball pean hammer and they tightened right up real good. It was real easy.

Good luck. I ran a tamer on my 83 FXWG for many years. It wore out, and I never replaced it.

Where did yours wear out? Mine wore out at the steel plate that go's in first.

@@joesurfer9754 It was the steel plate. But it was over 20 years. It probably got corroded between my time in Japan and Philippines. I went to stock set up , when going back to chain primary. Had a belt primary for many years.

@@arthurleino I still have my same tamer from around 1984. Been riding the whole time.

I got over a thousand mile's on it now sinse this video and clutch is working great but next time I have primary off I am going to replace that bottom steel plate that came with the tamer.

Some of the belt drive baskets seem to made out of cheap metal. I had every plate wear and they made a corresponding groove on the dogs they ride on so it made my clutch stick then randomly engage. Not the most fun thing on a suicide shift bike. In the end I replaced the basket

I am pulling apart my 76FXE that has been sitting for about 20 years. I am getting to just remember now all the stuff I did to it. Sealed primary, what looks to be possibly a solid sprocket (def not the compensator), 5-finger hub, Energy One clutch, and yes - a clutch tamer. But when I was pulling it all apart I lost track of the assembly order of things. I have what seems to be a plastic shim of some sort that is the exact size of that inner plate that goes over the studs. Now I am looking for some sort of tamer assembly instruction sheet.

Ha - just found a box with a bunch of old junk - in there was the tamer installation instructions, and all the shims it originally came with. Back in business. Back to my tear down. Interesting I knew that I had swapped out the original compensator - but I couldn't remember what I put in there - pulling it out it almost looked like a solid sprocket but I guess it isn't. Found paperwork on that too - It's a BDL compensator. I read a lot of bad and good about them. Not sure if I will be putting that back in or not.

I know this is not related to your clutch, but I emailed BDL about that compensator (after I discovered that is was seized up), found out that they updated/upgraded the design 13 years ago. Anyway after answering a couple questions, they said they are sending me a brand new updated one for free. Pretty amazing customer service if you ask me.

If you have a 4-spd on that - have you noticed any wear on the oil slinger on the kicker side of things? Mine has a weird wear mark about half way down the 'cone'/slinger like it is rubbing on something inside lightly inside the kicker cover when not pulling the clutch.
