Don Carlo is one of my favorite operas. The best performances I ever heard was in this same theater in 1979 with von Karajan's hand-picked cast. Vocally, this performance is the artistic and musical equal, in fact better in that the company is using the complete version of the duet rather than von Karajan's truncated version. That said, I feel nothing but pity for the artists who have to endure the pictorial outrages that are being foisted upon them and today's audiences by today's directors. In this moment, as in most, the focus should be on the two principal singers. Anything else detracts our focus on where it should be. It is my hope that artists of your quality will be able to seize control from these megalomaniacs and restore opera to the balance of music, voice and drama that it has always been intended to be.
