Wonderful ballad of the Peking and her superman captain Jurgen Jurs as recounted by intrepid cameraman Irving Johnston. This song is a glorious tribute to the romance of the last of the sailing ship. And to think I boarded her in 1986 or 87 and never knew of her wondrous adventurous history! A brave ship manned by even braver men! Sad to note of the two young men that were tragically washed off the ship but stirling to note how the superman captain twice saved men that washed overboard by rushing to the stern and jumped into the icy sea with one hand holding a rope and the other to grab hold of the hairs of the overboard men as they came by him... a superman indeed! Three cheers to Captain Jurgen Jurs!
Wonderful, lyrical narrative performed by a master of the genre. Ralph' s music is invariably uplifting and he connects every time with his audience. Excellent.0
Though living in Australia, I have been fortunate to see Ralph in concert numerous times. Always utterly charming, with his richly melodic voice adding a further rich timbre to his song introductions or, communication with his audience, add to that his richly melodic voice, superb guitar playing and your have one of the finest all round performers it has been my pleasure to see. Far, far better live than on any recorded medium.
Saw Ralph perform this at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury a couple of years ago. This Sunday (2nd October 16) my daughter and I are going to see Ralph in concert in Ludlow.. Ive been a fan since the late 1960s.
