      Any chance you can compare the Sennheiser e 614 to the AT4053b and others like the Shure SM94?

    E 614 captured you most naturally. Impressed.

    I've been having the same issue - trying to find reviews on the E614 being used for dialogue, so many thanks for this extremely useful comparison! Take care.

    I've opened the door to small diaphragm condenser mics for indoor dialogue and my mind is being blown. I'm setting up a new office studio and am going to try and get my hands on the Sennheiser E614, Rode NT5 or Oktava MK-012 and see how they compare to my expensive shotgun mics like the Rode NTG3 and Sennheiser MKH416. The phase issues in my last studio were very clear, but this one is being sound treated, so I'm not sure a switch is necessary, but we'll see.

    I've been curious how well the Sennheiser e614 would do with dialog. This is amazing. Thanks so much for this. I'm getting one.

    Same problem, bro. I've been looking for reviews about indoors voice for hours before I found your video. Thanks!

  • @lachlanlikesathing
    @lachlanlikesathing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You may notice that the E614 audio has more hiss in the background - this seems to be because the E614 is far less sensitive than the NT-1 and so requires a much higher input gain level from the Zoom H4N Pro. Otherwise I think they both sound pretty similar, and I like the Sennheiser's smooth, natural tone. Both are better than the VideoMic Pro+, but the comparison is slightly unfair since the VideoMic Pro+ is so much further away from my mouth. What do you think?

    • @metal571
      @metal571 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hah I might be a bit biased since I use the NT1 and love it to death, but the Senn sounds good too. Get a CloudLifter to boost the gain of that Senn using phantom power. Podcastage has a video comparing the CloudLifter to other similar devices as well, for reference

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip metal, but the E614 already takes 48v phantom power (it's not a dynamic). I suspect its the combination of the Zoom H4n Pro not having much gain and the E614 being less sensitive than your average condenser because of its high maximum SPL tolerance. I've ordered a Tascam DR100Mk 3 to replace the H4N Pro to see if that helps (it should).

      I think that for my echoi room I am going to buy now E614 instead of Rode NTG1 which I planned, because I am in shock of how similar E614 sounds to NT-1 (they have pretty similar frequencies also - E614 is very flat mic and this is unique for this price rage). This is some kind of opening eyes video, since I always thought large condenser microphones are always better. So sorry that there are no any other revies to this mic with the voice application, seems it is underrated as hell. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video. Got my E614 today for TH-cam/Twitch voice recording. Sadly I will send it back right away, after just one minute of testing. I need to crank my Yamaha AG03 gain all the way up to 100% to get at least a level that I can work with. So for now I my Rode NTG1 will stay in business.

  • @academgorodok
    @academgorodok 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video! Yes E614 smaller than the NT1 and has a narrow polar pattern but it is very noisy as I can hear. So after compression you will get even more of this noise. Noise reduction or gate plugins could help in post but still the E614 self noise screams like hell. But it is not a problem as long as you do not need a perfect sound.

    I have two of these that I use for overhead drum mics. I definitely need to try them out as dialogue mics.

    Would have been nice to hear the Rode VM Pro boomed where the Sennheiser was and recorded into the Zoom. The Sennheiser sounded good, bit a bit too much self noise, not sure of it was the mic or the recorder at this gain level. The NT1 stole the show, I love this mic, proud to have one.

    to me, the E614 sounds best in this video.

  • @bassguy7111
    @bassguy7111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know this is an older post, but just by chance this might be a useful Idea...
    I would suggest putting the NT1 in the same place you have the E614. (from above I expect? just out of frame)
    The hugely low self noise of the NT1 coupled with the fuller low end will easily allow the distance increase plus you can omit the pop guard as well.
    You won't have to push the gain much more either.
    Just a suggestion.

    Really thank you very much for your video. I'm also looking for a good indoor microphone at an affordable price. Have you done any testing in a larger space with higher reverb rates?

  • @lorenzofk
    @lorenzofk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome thanks for this review! I’ve seen the Curtis Judd video too and found this e614 on b&h and thought it may be a good more affordable option. From this video I really like the sound of the e614.

  • @ben-benedict
    @ben-benedict 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    not too much reverb with the rode nt1 . you don't have any room treatment , how that is possible? amazing . do you apply post treatment on the audio ? the E614 is really nice too

    The Senheiser E614 and Rode sounds similar. The Senheiser sounds a bit veiled. But its great.

    NT-1 sounds 👌 I've considered a boom mic. I tried a camera-mounted Rode VideoMic once but wasn't happy with it -- similar to what you're getting in this video, I was too far away from it and it wasn't great with reverb.

    What boom arm are you actually using for the E614? It looks exactly what I need, and I hear your aussie, and I'm australian too so hopefully I can manage to snag what a beaut you have for yourself

    I personally like the metal571 aesthetic but soundwise the difference between the NT-1 and the E614 is very slight. The NT-1 may be less boomy and more clear. Both way better than the VideoMic. And yes, level is very low, needs more gain.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The gain problem might be the nail in the coffin for the E614 unless he finds a solution for ultra clean amplification. I have heard hiss can be a bit of an issue when amplifying it to proper levels.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rich1051414 You're right, the hiss is worrying. I think I've got a little more headroom with gain before I think the hiss will get terribly noticeable. It's more obvious now since I am switching between microphones with differing levels of hiss. Eventually I may pick up a Zoom F8 or Tascam DR100 MK3 to get cleaner microphone pre-amps.

    Hey. Nice. 😄 You got my comment. What's good for the e614 is the lower price than the others, yet it's the same to the other one and better to that on cam mic.

    Sennheiser E614 sounds the best to me. Rode NT-1 was on par but given its position annoyance, i would pass on it. Rode VideoMic Pro+ sounds flat

    9 months later, how are you liking this mic? I'm looking to pick one up, but I'm curious if you still think it's a good fit for indoor voice recording. Thanks!

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Recently I got one of these www.astonmics.com/EN/product/halo/halo so I have been using that for voiceover with the NT-1. I'm quite satisfied with the result - obviously it's not camera ready but it sounds good and mic input gain doesn't need to be nearly as high with phantom power!

  • @JoeCastellon
    @JoeCastellon ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish you had placed the Rode VideoMic Pro + right next to the E614. The distance hurts the sound so I believe it's not a fair representation of what the microphone is capable of. Having that said, I'm really interested in getting that E614 🤔

    Sweet review, I was looking for something that would do some nice scratch track but was really short for mounting on the FX6 & FX3's that I own...this just might fit the bill....Even better ebay sells them in sets for drums so got a good deal on 2 grabbing some low profile deadcats off B&H and will see how it does.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good thing in the sense it means that I matched the levels of all the microphones well, but I did not increase the gain enough for any of them in post.

  • @Steampunk915

    • @lachlanlikesathing

      Definitely being unfair on the poor VideoMic Pro+ here, would definitely expect a better result if it was boomed overhead like the E614.
