My husband just did this on our 2002 explorer. We took it to Goodyear and they told us it didn't need an alignment 😁. Just the scheduled tire rotation 👍. He's a carpenter. Maybe his eye for lining up framing helped . Thanks 👍

I commented earlier how well you did your explanation.
I just want to add a hint to make it easier to crank the tie rod. Take 4 pieces of cardboard 1 foot by 1 foot approximately. Place 2 each in front of your front tires and put a thin layer of dry sand on the 1st layer. Put the remaining 2 cardboard on top of the 1st like a sandwich. Drive the vehicle onto the cardboard and this allows the wheels to twist back and forth as you adjust the tie rods!

This is one of the best videos I've seen about wheel alignments. They tell you it's not a permanent fix and insist that it's just learning tool. I think the video should have began with making sure that everyone understand how important tire pressure is at the beginning of the video (for first timers). I have tried this method on my 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4 and it worked GREAT! Good Job Nathan!

Couple of suggestions... 1. doing it on grass will work if you have no other option, but a level paved surface will give more accurate results.. If you don't have a perfectly level surface, use pieces of plywood of different thickness as shims to help level your vehicle. Once the vehicle is level, you can measure and adjust not only toe, but caster and camber as well.. using an angle finder (even an angle finding app on a smart phone as long as you have a perfectly flat side on your phone will work pretty good ) Set your caster first..(not all cars have adjustable caster, if yours don't you can skip this) You can measure caster by comparing camber readings with the wheels straight ahead and then measure it again with the wheel turned to the lock... I'll have to double check, but the change in camber is equal to the caster measurement.. simple adjust the caster until its correct.. then set the final camber settings.. once those are all set correctly, then measure your toe. for the street.. go with about 1/16 of toe in.. it generally makes the vehicle more stable especially at higher speeds. For the track.. go with about 1/16 toe out. This will make the steering slightly quicker and more aggressive as you start to enter the turn... and provides more stability as you come off the corner. Don't get too crazy with toe though... no more than about a 1/8 inch or you'll start eating the tires alive, hurt fuel mileage.. and if your racing... scrub speed in corners. Also one other tip, after you make any adjustment... bounce the suspension a couple times to allow it to settle before taking the next measurement. Otherwise, great video.

If your steering wheel is that far out then putting it straight does not mean it does have the same amount of turns to each side. If not then take the steering wheel of and put back correctly.

Just did this alignment method today, used 4 cheap pizza pans from dollar tree, sprayed cooking oil between 2 on each side, placed under tires worked very good, also may use fishing line next time to be a little more accurate. And a good straight ruler or caliper.

Yeah this is a good way. I usually jack up the side I'm working on then toe it in about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch cause most specs in the alignment book recommended it. It keeps it from wandering left to right when your going down the road. Also there is an adjustment on the gear box that you should adjust to remove wandering. It just makes it tighter.

Honestly Nathan, I personally think it would be humorous to read the negative comments in here (as mentioned around the 7:00 minute mark). Jack stands, string, a few tools, and some informed common sense, and anyone can absolutely nail an alignment. I couldn’t tell you the last time I paid for an alignment, and both my cars have the most perfect tire wear I could ask for. Sure, if ya smack a big pot hole or something of the like, something may need tweaked, but with some time and patience, it’s worth it to have a vehicle that drives straight as an arrow down the road. Keep up the good work, my dude! Great video, LOTS of very useful information.
