in all actuality, the game would easily fit on a single disk, and actually did. The entire game resides on all 3 discs, it was just the FMV's that took up all the space. and I remember messing with the PC version as a kid and getting it to run without disc swapping by copying the videos to the hard drive.
Its so refreshing seeing someone who didn’t play it the first time round but can appreciate it for what it was at the time. I would love to see you play through the full game

@@RavingNutter when I 100% this game for the first time. I killed emerald in 1 turn without anything I went out of my way for. However Ruby took probably 40 hours of grinding to get what I needed for setup to beat him easy. But that was also before Internet guides and all the strats that exist now. I had to figure that shit out on my own

Very few games these days give off that feeling of satisfaction we had that day. Years later, the strat got around and we were like, "hey. That's our strategy. You can't steal that!"

I can't remember exactly how I beat him but some convoluted way that included killing the party, using phoenix with counter and w-summon or something and hades in the mix. I can't remember, I just remember I had everything else in the game done like 50 hours in, and it took close to another 50 just to beat ruby and the level of accomplishment I felt in a video game is still unmatched to this day

Should be: "IF you attack while its tail's up, it's gonna counterattack with its laser!" The translation was famously done by one very tired bilingual internal team member on an impossible deadline, rather than a professional translation team

Sorry to be an English teacher, but "Attack while it's tail's up!" is unmistakably an imperative command (with a punctuation error on "its"), no matter what comes after it. There is a way to make colloquial conditionals using "and" which is what I think you're referring to, which would be "Attack while its tail's up and it's gonna counterattack with it's laser!", but that's not what the translator used. It's especially clear as the two lines are fully separated not just by appearance in sequence but also by punctuation. The translator mistook the Japanese "と" to be the "and" meaning instead of the "cause/effect“ meaning. He didn't have the scene happening in front of him to know what the Japanese original dialogue is talking about in context, and had no time in his deadline to check, just pages of Japanese sentences to write English equivalents for.

@CloakedCedric the pixel characters were bright enough to look sort of cartoonish moving across paintings(Cloud being nicknamed Popeye due to the cartoonish arm similarity); the backdrops still looked great, especially when it did the fancy panning shots but one of the big appeals of FF8 when it came out was that the characters looked like they fit much better into the world, not just in terms of proportions but also in terms of colour palette and shading making the contrast less severe
I haven't watched it yet, but he's right... Mind over matter, electricity against robots, water against dragons, fire agaist plants, psychic against rock, etc...

One thing you need to be aware of is front and back row. Applies to both you and enemies, people in back row take half damage and deal half damage. You can change it for your characters by selecting order in the menu, selecting a character and then selecting them again. Also some characters have long range weapons that can deal full damage from the back row (barrett). There is also a materia for long range. At the moment cloud should be in the front row, barrett in the back and tifa could be either. Also if you back attack an enemy with physical damage it deals double.
Jon, I will literally worship you for the rest of time if you would give this game a serious 100% playthrough. FF7, was by far the most influential media in my childhood. The story is incredible!
My first ever 3D JRPG, came along at a time when I had just started senior school, a journey I only played through once but I played it to 100% (all weapons, golden chocobo, all materia, the works). It holds a very special place in my heart.
I was just about to comment on how much I enjoyed this and how it was a pity you didn't normally do series of videos because I'd enjoy you exploring the story (your reactions so far were hilarious) - and then you said maybe you'd do more. 0_0
ok things that will help alot: press what would be rb and lb (back trigger while in a fight) to run away keeping them held press select or whatever you made the button for select, it will show entrances and exits while exploring (this really helps) look everywhere, items are all over the place like peoples houses there draws and cubards etc . you already missed a few as well as chests you can use cure outside of battle you don't need tons of potions + shankys limit break heals level up material gets better skills like fire2 etc they do more damage material spells like bolt fire ice and earth effect enemies differently, bolt for machines and water, fire for things made of ice, earth hits all but flying enemies and ice for fire things. using the wrong thing can cause 50% less damage (like using fire on machines) limit breaks will always go first and will jump the que when attacking use this to get extra hits in when you level you will get newer limit breaks (more powerful ones) dont forget to set them in the menu (under limit) so you don't lose out. buy lots of equipment with slots, more slots, more material, more spell, more damage slots with an "=" in-between them lets you use ALL material and hits all enemies, it speeds up the killing your speech options effects what happens later in a date scene and YES, YOU CAN DATE ANYONE if you do it correctly when siding with some of your party. there is plenty more but these are the basics, follow them, they will make things easier for you and speed up game-play and it would be nice for people to like this comment so it gets noticed..
Honestly, I think a series on this game would be great. Many little loving touches were put into it, and you can tell. The hidden in-game dating stats, for example. In conversations/decisions that you make through the game, you unknowingly gain 'approval' points for different characters. Basically, there's this big 'date night' later on and the character you have the most points with you end up going on the date with. And yes, it is entirely possibly for you to go on the date with Barret. Great game, well worth a playthrough - either on the channel or privately.

As a Child I was stuck at the Gi Nattak fight for weeks and only found out years later that you can just one shot him with an elixir you even find right outside the boss room.
Go to Menu -> Order -> put Nimbus into the front row. He'll do more damage, though take more damage. I put ranged/spellcasters in the back row since they do the same damage and take less damage.
I never finished FF7--not a fan of JRPGs generally--but I did play it on the PC a while ago, and I was amazed at how much expression the animators put into the movements of the characters. Of course, they didn't have much choice since they couldn't put expression into the rigid, unchanging faces, but amazing work all the same.
Or you can just fill all your Materia slots with counter and mime, start the fight with 2x Summon Knights of the Round and then just put the controller down and watch them get destroyed.

The reason Aeris' death was so impactful is because killing a main character in a game back then just wasn't a common thing. Especially in a game aimed at young adults. And killing off a character, one so vital, pivotal and involved in a romantic love triangle. It hit everyone out of left field and caught us off guard. It was like a kick to the gut. The saddest thing, was everyone thought she would be resurrected. Nope!
@@RobertoMaybe1 I played FFII(US) Which "killed" a bunch of main characters. But resurrected them all later. Then played FFlII(US), and can't remember any playable characters dying. So I guess this was the first one for where death was a permanent thing and not a mild inconvenience.
PS1 and FF7 was the first console and game i bought myself. spent the first week playing the first hour of the game over an over because I didn't have a memory card. Also, it was not compatible with the TV in the living room so the screen bounced and we had to send it in to Sony to have a chip installed which took i think 6 weeks. Love this game. It introduced me to JRPGs
Would love to see you make a series of this. It was the first game i ever got to play on my brother's playstation. It was the best final fantasy ever in my eyes.
As someone who loves the whole Final Fantasy franchise I am 1: one of those people who still haven't gotten over it and 2: dieing of laughter at Jon's interpretation of the game. It's a fair assessment for a first impression. 10/10 Jon.

aww shit yea we so need a series of this. Also be sure to use steal a lot as you can steal some high level weapons and armour *relatively* near the start of the game (maybe like 5-7 hours in). There are also hidden items all over the place.
I was shocked you played this. But, also very happy. Please do a full series. I love this game. Beaten it like 17 times. Also, the combat system has a surprising amount of depth to it. Most attacks and magic vary widely in effectiveness based on the situation you're in. Also, anyone with a melee weapon should be in the front row and party members with long range weapons in the back. You have this switched. lol Also Cloud doesn't officially have an establish girlfriend in the game, or really in the additional media. Its interpretation. And I choose to interpret Cloud/Vincent as the real relationship. lmao
in the config menu, you can set the ATB to wait, which pauses enemy actions while in game menus are open (such as magic, items etc) else its always rt combat.
I would LOVE to see you play through the entirety of this game! (Although FF8 is arguably superior in my opinion, nothing wrong with this one!) although if you do get it for PC there IS a graphical mod that renders the background in higher resolution. Something to think about!
I'm hoping you do a full series of this. The Materia system is *super* flexible, and you'll really get into setting up Materia combos. (The Connected Slots in the equipment can interact each other. Mostly with Blue, Support, Materia.)
I love how simultaneously confused and excited Jon is with this, I wanna see more. The story's silly here and there but I enjoy all the same. And the battle system is so fun to mess with~

John. I've never seen this adorable game before (or any of Final Fantasies) :). I definitely think you'd love *Little Big Adventure 2,* which is a pc game from same era (I believe can be found on steam or gog) with similiar mechanics but much cuter & has some story-telling & other adventure features. It is a sequel to Little Big Adventure 1 but 1 is not needed to understand or play 2.
It CAN BE real time, but depends on a setting in the settings. If it's set to "wait" then whenever the "time" bar fills up the character will join the "queue" for their action. So if you have 2 members in your party and 1 enemy, one of your guys' time bar fills up (but you, as the player, don't do anything), then the enemy's time bar fills up, then your other character's time bar fills up, the game will wait for you (the player) to do something with your first guy before allowing the enemy or other player character do anything. If you have the setting to "real time" or whatever, the game will NOT wait for you to make a decision on what to do. So if you put your controller down and walk away during a battle the enemy will continuously get turns and keep attacking you. Basically, in "real time" mode the time it takes to decide what you want to do (attack, magic, defend, etc.) matters. In "wait" mode, that time does NOT matter as the game effectively pauses when you're in the menu. All in all, the game IS turn based, but you can make it a little more fun by forcing you to make fast decisions. However, for new players, the "wait" setting is probably a bit better while you explore the menus and what not. EDIT: Also, whenever you get to the world map, there is an area on a beach where you can equip your characters with.... something that absorbs elemental attacks, then just use a turbo controller and use a rubber band to hold the joystick straight down (or up, I forget), and turn turbo on for X (or whatever your select button is) and hold that down with tape, and cloud will run back and forth on the beach and the ONLY monsters there ONLY use elemental attacks so you can't ever be hurt and all your characters will just attack every time. So basically you can leave your console running overnight and when you wake up your material will likely be mastered This is the only spot in the game where this works. Anywhere else and cloud will just stop when he hits the edge. But in this spot he'll run back and forth.... I don't remember EXACTLY where it is.... but I'll look for it.
Also, I had no idea how much I wanted to combine your commentary with one of the most significant games of my childhood. But I want this series. A lot.

Basically, there's this big 'date night' later on and the character you have the most points with you end up going on the date with. And yes, it is entirely possibly for you to go on the date with Barret.

As a Child I was stuck at the Gi Nattak fight for weeks and only found out years later that you can just one shot him with an elixir you even find right outside the boss room.
Does not really come up much in VII, with the notable exception of the Gi Tribe under Cosmo Canyon. I remember exploiting that feature most in X.
Go to Menu -> Order -> put Nimbus into the front row. He'll do more damage, though take more damage. I put ranged/spellcasters in the back row since they do the same damage and take less damage.
Please please please please please make this a series. The nostalgia is so strong.

I never finished FF7--not a fan of JRPGs generally--but I did play it on the PC a while ago, and I was amazed at how much expression the animators put into the movements of the characters. Of course, they didn't have much choice since they couldn't put expression into the rigid, unchanging faces, but amazing work all the same.
Omg, please make this a full playthrough series along with challenging Ruby and Emerald Weapons (2 of the hardest secret bosses in any game out there)
Or you can just fill all your Materia slots with counter and mime, start the fight with 2x Summon Knights of the Round and then just put the controller down and watch them get destroyed.

The reason Aeris' death was so impactful is because killing a main character in a game back then just wasn't a common thing. Especially in a game aimed at young adults. And killing off a character, one so vital, pivotal and involved in a romantic love triangle. It hit everyone out of left field and caught us off guard. It was like a kick to the gut. The saddest thing, was everyone thought she would be resurrected. Nope!

@@RobertoMaybe1 I played FFII(US) Which "killed" a bunch of main characters. But resurrected them all later.
Then played FFlII(US), and can't remember any playable characters dying. So I guess this was the first one for where death was a permanent thing and not a mild inconvenience.

PS1 and FF7 was the first console and game i bought myself. spent the first week playing the first hour of the game over an over because I didn't have a memory card. Also, it was not compatible with the TV in the living room so the screen bounced and we had to send it in to Sony to have a chip installed which took i think 6 weeks. Love this game. It introduced me to JRPGs

Makes me want to finally give FF7 another shot. I lost my save near the end of disk 1 a long time ago and it dissuaded me from starting over again.
As someone who loves the whole Final Fantasy franchise I am 1: one of those people who still haven't gotten over it and 2: dieing of laughter at Jon's interpretation of the game. It's a fair assessment for a first impression. 10/10 Jon.

aww shit yea we so need a series of this. Also be sure to use steal a lot as you can steal some high level weapons and armour *relatively* near the start of the game (maybe like 5-7 hours in). There are also hidden items all over the place.

I was shocked you played this. But, also very happy. Please do a full series. I love this game. Beaten it like 17 times. Also, the combat system has a surprising amount of depth to it. Most attacks and magic vary widely in effectiveness based on the situation you're in. Also, anyone with a melee weapon should be in the front row and party members with long range weapons in the back. You have this switched. lol
Also Cloud doesn't officially have an establish girlfriend in the game, or really in the additional media. Its interpretation. And I choose to interpret Cloud/Vincent as the real relationship. lmao
Oh, and I love the old "Attack when the tail is up" mistake and that Jon still figured out to not attack when the tail is up. XD

You might be surprised. Despite the reputation, VII was very self aware and intentionally silly at times.
in the config menu, you can set the ATB to wait, which pauses enemy actions while in game menus are open (such as magic, items etc) else its always rt combat.
I would LOVE to see you play through the entirety of this game! (Although FF8 is arguably superior in my opinion, nothing wrong with this one!) although if you do get it for PC there IS a graphical mod that renders the background in higher resolution. Something to think about!
I'm hoping you do a full series of this. The Materia system is *super* flexible, and you'll really get into setting up Materia combos.
(The Connected Slots in the equipment can interact each other. Mostly with Blue, Support, Materia.)

John. I've never seen this adorable game before (or any of Final Fantasies) :). I definitely think you'd love *Little Big Adventure 2,* which is a pc game from same era (I believe can be found on steam or gog) with similiar mechanics but much cuter & has some story-telling & other adventure features. It is a sequel to Little Big Adventure 1 but 1 is not needed to understand or play 2.
I had this for my PS1
It CAN BE real time, but depends on a setting in the settings. If it's set to "wait" then whenever the "time" bar fills up the character will join the "queue" for their action. So if you have 2 members in your party and 1 enemy, one of your guys' time bar fills up (but you, as the player, don't do anything), then the enemy's time bar fills up, then your other character's time bar fills up, the game will wait for you (the player) to do something with your first guy before allowing the enemy or other player character do anything. If you have the setting to "real time" or whatever, the game will NOT wait for you to make a decision on what to do. So if you put your controller down and walk away during a battle the enemy will continuously get turns and keep attacking you. Basically, in "real time" mode the time it takes to decide what you want to do (attack, magic, defend, etc.) matters. In "wait" mode, that time does NOT matter as the game effectively pauses when you're in the menu. All in all, the game IS turn based, but you can make it a little more fun by forcing you to make fast decisions. However, for new players, the "wait" setting is probably a bit better while you explore the menus and what not.
EDIT: Also, whenever you get to the world map, there is an area on a beach where you can equip your characters with.... something that absorbs elemental attacks, then just use a turbo controller and use a rubber band to hold the joystick straight down (or up, I forget), and turn turbo on for X (or whatever your select button is) and hold that down with tape, and cloud will run back and forth on the beach and the ONLY monsters there ONLY use elemental attacks so you can't ever be hurt and all your characters will just attack every time. So basically you can leave your console running overnight and when you wake up your material will likely be mastered This is the only spot in the game where this works. Anywhere else and cloud will just stop when he hits the edge. But in this spot he'll run back and forth.... I don't remember EXACTLY where it is.... but I'll look for it.
