I've seen him on a show like Blackadder and then in American shows like Veep and House and it's amazing how flawless his American accent is. I sometimes forget those characters are played by the same actor.

At 20:50 where you talk about British actors tackling Southern American accents, Tom Hiddleston portrayed Hank Williams in a feature film biopic and the accent was spot on.
It is possible to find nuance and range within a given structure (talking of Shakespeare & verse), otherwise there wouldn't be 200 different orchestras/conductors' versions of Beethoven's 5th that you could buy: the instruments aren't varying away from the notes from the score or suddenly wildly improvising, but nevertheless the overall interpretations are markedly different. Instead of striking outwards, the artist delves within.
The well respected British poet and actor Benjamin Zephaniah turned down the honour because he did not want the words 'British Empire' added to his name, and it was an extremely honourable decision. Many other respected people also turned it down and for very respectable reasons.
Definitely need more Hugh Laurie on podcasts!!
