I do pursue film making as well but am totally self taught.
Frankly i feel the best approach is to assist on movies for the period you will do any film making course. And then to spend the money you have saved by not enrolling in that course on multiple small projects of your own using the skills you have developed over years with the people/friends you have made in your assisting journey. Send your film to festival & share it among your peers. This has done wonders for me & i dont see a reason why it won't work for others if they are really putting there heart & soul into it.
