This encounter with these Belugas will stay with you forever. Things like this has a hold on you. You were so lucky to see these beautiful creatures. They are beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Over 40 years ago a leather skinned Curragh on journey across the Atlantic, also attracted Whales, likely due to the soft pliable structure giving off very different vibes to a hard boat.
Just a few mile up the Saguenay the surface water is fresh, a few feet under there is a halocline, then the water is salt. The depth of the salt varies throughout the year. A few years ago I was with some friends maybe 8 or ten mile upriver, maybe further, and the salt layer started at about 30 feet. I wonder how the animals are affected by the buoyancy changes - it certainly would make floating at the surface more difficult for them. Of course they can simply return downstream towards the St. Laurent if they tire. I would assume they are after concentrations of food - likely baitfish. Greenland sharks also frequent the Saguenay. I'm not sure it is completely understood why.
Wetsuits? You will freeze in no time if you fall in even with wetsuits. What you need is two drysuits but they are expensive but it might not be prudent to kayak in a drysuit either.... Belugas are my favorites! They are oh so cute!
Husband - gets pushed in boat Wife - Did that whale just push your boat? Husband - hold up 2 fingers. Yeah, twice. Wife - Yeah, they’ll do that, they’ll play with your boat Husbands boat starts moving backwards....and the wife never saw him again. All she heard was the pod of Belugas making sinister laughing noises Lololol
I highly recommend them. Purchased in 2003 and did not expect them to last till now with zero repairs 17 years later. Keep them packed and out of the sun and UV when not in use and these kayaks just seem to not degrade!
Perhaps you meant 'could', because sharks actually wouldn't shred the boat. Sharks are not human and don't do things for kicks or fun. The kayaks are not food, and nor are they a threat.
jeffhubbard100 exactly lmaoo humans are the only living species that destroys things for fun. Carnivores attack because they’re hungry that’s it. Humans kill for ENJOYMENT and thrill.
These are the world's southernmost population of belugas, which, other than these whales, are an entirely arctic animal. This population is on a fast track to extinction, as the animals are considered the world's most contaminated with industrial chemicals, primarily pcb's, and dioxin from a variety of industries in the Great Lakes region, Montreal and Quebec, and mercury and lead from the aluminum smelter in the city of Saguenay, upstream from where this video was filmed.
The male belugas in this population have a low life expectancy due to liver cancer etc, the females love longer as their bodies are able to remove some of the toxins by concentrating it into breast milk. The animals are not very fertile, and what young they do have often die before they are grown, it is thought the toxic milk is killing them. It's a grim picture.
@@deandeann1541 Thanks for such relevant information. We visited the cetacean center in Tadoussac and learned of some of the challenges they are facing. Your description really helps solidify a better understanding.
@@sailingaccidentalgybe I have dove with these animals many times - Not on purpose, they were often where I was working. When they glide by you underwater at the edge of visibility they will turn their head sideways to look at you. Unlike some other marine creatures they would leave us alone, and we left them alone.

Xena Be these animals are wonders in themselves. Don't try to see human speech in their communication. That is the slippery slope to whales in cages, as entertainment, we treat criminals better than that.
SRSLY? I was an anthro major. I would have gone into marine biology if I'd lived near a school with available spots in that course. I know better than to stick an animal in a cage for entertainment. We can learn a great deal by reaching a common ground and working to understand each other's vocalizations and body language. Fyi, it's quite likely that belugas and cetaceans are more intelligent than humans.
Xena Be words are misread all the time and the ilinformed and uneducated will see the whales as cutesy psuedo pets if they think they are communicating in freaking English.

This Cruel Inuit hunting of Belugas must be put to an end. Belugas are one of the most friendliest dolphins towards human beings. I watched a video of these Inuits latching on the beluga with a harpoon, and the beluga is bleeding while trying to escape, and also, killed a whole pod of belugas, which is the type of hunting that is unlike how the red man hunts one buck to feed their whole entire tribe. Inuits are overhunting belugas, indiscriminately, just how they overhunted the Steller's Sea Cow into extinction.
