I almost cried watching this. The thought of Griffey leaving Seattle in 2000 breaks my heart, because I can clearly see that fans have their most sentimental memories of him there. I'm glad he went back to the Mariners for the end of his career though. Truly a beautiful story for Griffey and a GREAT way to end his career.
Griffey said the reaction he got from the fans in Seattle when he returned was a huge reason he decided to finish his career in Seattle. He didn't know how the fans would react to him and they welcomed him back with open arms.
I don't even live in the same time zone as the Mariners, but my adolescent self can't handle seeing Buhner and JR together. Goddam I loved baseball back then.
@@thpisland2423 that's just because of his defense. I get it, by a WAR judgment it wasnt a good year. But he still had a bat. He should have went to dh or first base after the 2000 season but he was stubborn
I don't think so at that point. He said before hand that he was scared to go back because he didn't know how the city of Seattle and all the fans would treat him. It wasn't until after this he considered coming back.
4:35 that's true he did. So did Kemp and Payton. Before these dudes, Seattle teams were nothing but a joke. Don't get me wrong, Seattle had great players before the 90's era, but know one took them seriously. The Mainers and Sonics were not worth following, real talk! When Griffey, Kemp, and Payton came to town, people took notice of the sport teams in this State. Much love and RESPECT to those guys!
I live in Seattle now but grew up in Tennessee. People here are amazed to find out I rooted for the Mariners and Sonics growing up in the 90s. They had so much national appeal.

Seattle loves you Ken.

the man who saved baseball in Seattle. who was truly worried before this game that the fans didnt like him. you could tell how choked up he was,
Crazy this almost never happened. He attempted suicide in the late 80s. I never knew that.

same! man, did not expect the nostalgia
Best all around player ever.
James Forcum Willie Mays ?
Ichiro exists..
@@thunderhammer593 lol so does griffey
Willie was the greatest now we have Jr.
@@thunderhammer593 Jr a better power hitter than Ichiro
I miss Griffey so much! Loved watching him play when I was a kid❤️
Such a difference from when A-Rod made his first return to Seattle after leaving.
Hands Down, HIGHTLIGHT Real Machine. Best ever, Thank You Griffey for Being My Favorite. MJ who? THE KID, JR GRIFFEY #1
So lucky to have been at that game in the suites. Got free tickets from work. That was an incredible experience.
I knew he was coming back to Seattle when he hit a HR, and the crowd loved him for it!
I wish there was a video of Jr. in his first at-bat back in Seattle!!
There is a video of him hitting 2 home runs in this series against Seattle.
This city will never stop loving you kid.
I like how they used the Jurassic park theme
Ikr
No disrespect cuz I love Griffey also...but because he was a fossil by then
@@oeao2841 He hit 30 home runs that year with 93 rbis 85 walks(14 intentional) and 6 stolen bases. Not too bad, for a "fossil"
@@jesuschristislord6790 Unfortunately those stats don't matter in today's world cause according to BBR he had only 0.7 WAR that year

The GOAT. Thank you Jr.#24
He knew he was coming back for sure.

Ken should've never left.
I can barley wear a hat the right way, ALWAYS flipped backwards because of Jr
I think if contracts weren't a thing he would have probably taken his Reds stuff off and played for the Mariners that night.
i Didn't realize how much being in Seatle

seahawks had a few good teams in the 1980s. made the afc title game.
Why did they use Jurassic Park theme 😂
SwingMan 24 no disrespect because I love Griffey too...but im guessing because he was a fossil by then
@@oeao2841 I think this year he probably had his best season as a Red... maybe he loves Jurassic Park?
Did they mute the audience cause until Griffey was just about to turn around to face forward in front of the table I couldn't hear them at all.
Something tells me Russell Wilson won’t have the same reception tonight. :p (I mean 8 years vs the 1st game the very next season)
Leaving Seattle was the worst decision he ever made.
Imagine griffey and Ichiro with griffey in his prime
Seattles prodigal son. What if he never left? Maybe his career would have gone different.
Red Lobster or Outback Steakhouse?
Why’re they using the Jurassic Park theme!? 😂😂😂
Efrén Pérez no disrespect cuz I love The Kid to...but I’m guessing because he was a fossil by then 🤣
TOKEN JR!!!!!!!!🏳🌈🏳🌈🏳🌈🏳🌈🏳🌈
Are they playing that song because they see him as a fossil haha
lol
What’s with the Jurassic park theme though?
