  • Castle Fraser is a remarkable historical landmark located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Renowned for its stunning architecture and rich history, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the past. Built in the 15th century, Castle Fraser has been associated with several notable families and played a significant role in Scottish history.
Originally constructed by the Fraser family, the castle served as their stronghold. The original tower, known as the Keep, was built around 1450, with subsequent additions made over the following centuries. The castle's unique Z-plan design, featuring two towers connected by a central range, is a distinguishing feature.
In the 17th century, ownership of Castle Fraser was transferred to the Mackenzie family through marriage. The influential Mackenzies made significant additions to the castle, including the beautiful chapel and a grandiose frontage, giving it an imposing and elegant appearance.
Another noteworthy occupant of Castle Fraser was Lady Saltoun, head of the Fraser family and chief of Clan Fraser. Known for her dedication to preserving the heritage of the castle, Lady Saltoun conducted an extensive restoration project during her ownership. Her efforts ensured that Castle Fraser remained a remarkable and well-maintained historical site.
Today, Castle Fraser is managed by the National Trust for Scotland, who opened it to the public in 1977. Visitors can explore the sprawling estate, admire the stunning gardens, and marvel at the impressive collection of historical artifacts within the castle. The interior showcases a combination of authentic medieval features and 19th-century Victorian style.
Castle Fraser's history and its occupants offer a captivating tale of Scottish heritage. From its origins as a Fraser stronghold to the Mackenzie's architectural contributions, and the preservation efforts of Lady Saltoun, this magnificent castle is a testament to centuries of history and the people who once called it home. A visit to Castle Fraser is an opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the rich tapestry of Scotland's past.

The stone work is so amazingly cared for. It takes a ton of labor to repair and upkeep them. Outstanding mirror to the lovely garden work which is itself absolutely no easy chore.
