Too Fast To Race: Lancia's Awesome ECV Prototypes

  • Presented in 1988, the unique Lancia ECV2 prototype represents a tantalizing glimpse into what could have been the evolution of rallies if the mighty Group B cars had been allowed to continue racing. And here's its story. #lancia #history #rally #1980s #classiccars
    Early into the 1986 season, while Lancia's fearsome Delta S4 battled with the Peugeot 205 T16 for the World Championship, work at Abarth's HQ was already well underway on the cars for the 1987 season and beyond.
    The tragic accidents in Portugal and Corsica during the 1986 season prompted motorsport's international governing body to ban the Group B cars from the World Rally Championship by the year's end.
    Lancia's now-redundant rally monster went on to wow the crowds of the Bologna Motor Show in December 1986 and the Geneva Motor Show in March of '87 under the acronym ECV, which stood for Experimental Composite Vehicle, yet didn't last much longer in its original form.
    Once its show car duty was over, the Lancia ECV prototype was dismantled to reuse its carbon fiber chassis and sophisticated running gear for a further developed model presented in 1988 as the ECV 2.

    How radical was Lancia in the day. Great concepts that unfortunately didn't come to fruition. Thank you again, Matteo, for more insights in this wonderful marque. Saluti dall'Australia 🇦🇺

      Agreed, it makes it hard to understand how it was chasing luxury and performance at that time. They were way ahead of the later times.

    Simply amazing, and all this in '80s. Bravo Lancia! 👏🏼

    The ECV1 Replica from Beppo Volta made a rollout at the Rallylegend in San Marino in 2010. We drove from Germany to the Rallylegend because we want to see this car in Action - it was awesome and unforgetable. Each fan of Rallye an especially Group B should visit the Rallylegend at San Marino, there are no much chances to come so close to the cars like there. It´s such an great atmosphere at this weekend, unbelieveable.

    The ECV 2 could have been a concept today. It looks very ahead of its time especially for the 80’s!

    A great revisit to the awesome Group B years. The Lancia team was simply incredible in these years and beyond with the Lancia Deltas Evolutions. So sad though that these cars took probably the greatest talent from us in the shape of Henri Toivonen.

    The ECV2 has a body only a mother can love. The Tri-flux looks fascinating though.

    I find Integrating the 1985 Lancia Thema radiator grill into this futuristic body shell a bit hilarious! The engine with alternating exhaust and intake ports that not only facilitates more even heat transfer but also room (on both sides of the inline 4 cylinder engine) for 2 large turbochargers is in my eyes a stroke of genius!

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was indeed a brilliant idea, the Triflux. Unfortunately, there was no use for it beyond the Group B project, and it's believed only 5 engines exist

    My goodness!
    I'd never heard of this car and knew nothing of the double-cross-flow head. This is extraordinary stuff.
    I imagine that the intercoolers had to work pretty hard to be effective with the inlet for each valve running right up next to a branch of the exhaust manifold.
    I confess, I do not find the ECV2 even a little attractive. This is from a man who thinks the Citroen Ami6, M35 and BX 4TC are cars of profound beauty.
    The world is full of Group B "nearly cars", not least the 6R4 and the RS200... But this seems to be the maddest of them all.
    Another excellent video, filled with interesting facts quite unkonwn to me.
    Bravo!

    Yey! I saw signore Volta's ECV and 037 hybrid live, on Rallye Český Krumlov. Kristyna has even photo with mr. Volta. That lovely red ECV replica should be somewhere in Czech Republic also.
    This project was great, it's sad the group B was banned. The acceleration on track was breathtaking.
    Thanks for that great video!

      Yes, the Heritage Hub has finally opened to the public: they offer 2h guided tours that must be booked in advance. museoauto.vivaticket.it/index.php

      Cool! I know that all Volta's cars were registered on czech plates, there was some deep cooperation with czech racing bureau and some wealthy collector (idk his identity). Maybe I can try to find, where the ecv1 and 037h stays.
      And great news, that means we have to go to Turin once more!

    Lancia had a win at all cost mentality during this era....Group B would have spiralled out of control if the rules hadnt changed.But they had the Integale Delta to wow us with instead and thats not a bad compromise.....

    Niente?🙄🙄

    • @Tomshon9909
      @Tomshon9909 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the run for horses was not needed anymore, and the engine wasn't reliable enough to be used in group A or N. Also the engine is quite tall, so you can't built it into front engine car. And Lancia didn't have any model in that time to be mid-engine (i mean road legal car). As racing and rallying moved from rally prototypes to normal road legal cars with much less modifications, probably that engine had no future

    *_There is no such thing "too fast" in the World of Motorsport. This Prototypes were so fast that If were put into racing will become the center of attention and once again Lancia will seat on top of the Racing World and FIAT will be put into Nasty Dilema for them who to fund - Lancia in Rallying or Ferrari in Formula 1? We all know what decision they make and was wrong one..._* 😟😞

  • @carlosmagnus717
    @carlosmagnus717 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Too fast to run, not. Too much power for a rally stages yes, and not only that, too much abruptness when delivering the power as well. That is why the Lancia Delta S4 could not be champion in the WRC of '86. Whatever some may say, if the death of Henri Toivonen was the problem, Henri Toivonen would have also won in a Peugeot, which is different, Toivonen was the difference. From the 2nd part of the 86 season at an even level of drivers (Alen-Biasion vs. Salonen-Kankkunen) the most drivable car won, the most progressive in power delivery (not less powerful) and that was the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 E2, which won 4 rallies, Lancia Delta S4 only 2.
    In Sanremo Rally, Mr. Fiorio's umpteenth trap, which cost him dearly; if he had already lost the Constructors' World Championship, with the cancellation of the Italian rally they also lost the Drivers' Championship. You cannot disqualify a car in the middle of a rally when some alleged little skirts on the sides of car's bottom were already present in the pre-rally checks, which was the time to allege it. All this in a Sanremo organization that obeyed to a boss of a home team, unheard of; You cannot be judge and party.
    In my town they call that chauvinism and "fear of losing at home".
