Anyone else remember playing this In like, 6th or 7th grade? Edit: Hope that everyone who has previously played this and everyone who will play this song has a lot of fun with it! Its a nice piece and even though I played it in middle school, and I am now am in college studying something that has nothing to do with music, I still come back to this song. What I'm trying to say here is, have fun with your band experience!
I don't know why I had the urge to look this up. It just popped into my head today. I remember playing this song back in 6th grade band class. I'm 22 now and still remember how this melody goes.
Tbh this is probably my favorite song I played in band. It was so much fun. It was a vibe being in that room (as an alto sax) behind the flutes and the tubas a few rows back. It was just so nice and I think the song on its own is such a cool song.
I love Robert W. Smith's music but I've noticed he writes the bass line with the same rhythms as the bass line of his other songs. It's weird. But his music is so beautiful it definitely paints a picture of the title. I love his work. Anything I've ever played by him, including this one, has been a favorite of mine.
I find a lot of his pieces sound rather similar (I'm a flute player, so I base this off of the flute part) but, Surge, Escape From Krypton, and The Tempest all really remind me of each other
Played this song in grade 7 almost 9 years ago when TH-cam hadn't even fully been created so i couldn't comment saying "I'm playing this" haha. :) time flies! good times.
Ok so here’s what I imagine whenever I hear or listen to this piece: (0:45- 1:41)A group of African scouters go looking for the nearly extinct, ancient, black maned lion. As they go on the journey, they go to the Serengeti. They are on the search frantically as an approaching, brewing storm travels across the Serengeti. The storm continues and grows. The scouters still have not given up. They all set their hearts to this lion. (1:41- 2:04)Just about when the scouters are about to give up, they see it, a black maned lion. (2:04- 2:07) But just as they approach to take a closer look, a poacher rings out a shot and scares the lion off. (2:07- 2:30)So the scouters get more hands on deck. They order more scouters to hurry before the storm down pours and they may never see the lion again. (2:30-2:51)They chase after the lion. Spotting it here and there and then loosing it again. Just as the storm crowds the scouters, (2:51- 3:07) they see a whole pride of the black, maned lions and lioness. They celebrate, taking hundreds of photos and making history.
Makes me a bit emotional to hear it, my friend played the cymbals for this song and I was right there next to him playing my trumpet. He moved away, and this song sorta brings back the loud crashes and the laughs for me
+Sarah-Ann Cabe But anyway, they share the common pieces of the melody flutes and 1st clarinet do. Which happens do be for most of the piece, minus a few trumpet interjections.
+Sarah-Ann Cabe Yes you do,if you play this you should know that. Horn,Flute, and Saxs have it first then they switch with clarinet and trumps then they switch throughout the music piece
Played this for Region Band Orchestra a percussionist in 1st chair. Was an awesome experience to play with another Orchestra group. Only the percussion group was able to play with the other Orchestra group. Was an Honor and a great experience.
My favorite part of searching up songs that I’m playing in band class is seeing the people in the comments talking about how they played it years ago. It’s kinda like getting advice on something you’re doing from an older relative who also did that thing back in their day. I dunno, it’s just a really wholesome feeling.
Ahhhhh I love this song so much!!!!! We sight read this like maybe a month ago in 7th grade band and I loved so much my friend and I got our conductor to print out the sheet music for us. But I got sad because we'd probably never play it again, but today we were getting our songs for the concert. When he pulled this out I was so shocked. I never thought we would play it and now I'm so happy. It's so fun I play it on flute.
LOVE it! played it in sixth grade. memorized not only my clarinet part but the flute part too! and it was my first year! i have a habit of memorizing songs...

If you don't know what MPA is it is basically Music Performance Adjudication. It's where you play music and get judged. They have numbers 1-5 1 being the best and 5 being the worst. 1 is Superior 2 is Excellent 3 is Average 4 is Below Average 5 is Poor.
