I like how Brutus accepted Pixie immediately as soon as he saw her, probably because she's just such an adorable cat.
He was, basically, accepting responsibility for her, probably just like he did for his handle, Sgt. Castillo,. And, even though he wasn't responsible for what happened then, he STILL feels responsibility for it, and, tries to ensure nothing bad happens to the kitten HE'S responsible for!!

Military dogs usually retire after a severe injuries, old age, or the death of handlers. From what I hear those dogs get hard to train when a handler dies. I think there's a movie about such a thing. I don't remember the name.

@@themarinefan Max was injured from a suicide bomber and his handler was killed in the gunfight soon after, which resulted in Max being traumatized. It's been a long time since I saw that movie so I had to look at wikipedia for this one lol.

As a German shepherd owner, I can confirm that German shepherds tend to take cats/kittens in like they’re their own. I once had one who basically adopted my cat’s kitten. The two were so loving with each other

Pixi's story is the perfect representation of a flat character arch. The character itself doesn't change, but the world changes and is made better because of the character.

Character development
Brutus is adorable. Despite everything he's been through, he's actually a GREAT adoptive parent, especially for an animal. Many of the things that plays out as comedy here are, in reality, ways that animal parents tries to make their cubs acquire confidence in themselves, may that be by pretending to be losing (or even trying) in a fight like many cats do, or something like that. He's stern and stoic, but he knows EXACTLY what he's doing.
True, He is just so adorable, I see myself in pixie. And when she jumps into the puddle and he goes to save her, a truly amazing dad, even though he is adoptive. And pixie giving contagious kindness to the spider is just so amazing, I hope to see more amazement in the future! Like a Halloween Comic.

Idk, it looks like Pixie's size varies from Comic to Comic. In some of the newer ones, she's still a small kitten, but in some she looks like she's a little older.

with the more human comic, i noticed how brutus wears his watch like how soldiers wear it to tell the time while holding a gun, or to prevent reflections blowing their cover. nice touch.
I think the author may be a legitimate veteran.
If you ask any American veteran why they wear their watch like that, their answer won't be anything about reflection, like it technically is the reason. They'll say something along the lines of "so I can see my enemy's time of death".
Pixie filled brutus' life with innocence and joy, which helped to heal what he'd been through in war.
He also became her big brother, protecting her.
So they both needed each other.
I dunno. In some cases, I see him to be more of a father figure towards her. Not too much of a big brother.

@@Scout_1209 yes often when you wear it that way you can see the time while you are using your weapon. also my cousin's watch and many others in his unit have a built in compass so they can find their objective easier. This is all just speculation from a civvy who knows a couple military members.
@Scout_1209 Ii keeps the face of the watch from cutting into your wrist if you're doing push-ups and prevents it from getting scratched up if you're high crawling or low crawling. It also prevents it from breaking
